AMD HD8180 Graphics Driver for XP

@jaclaz

So, are you prepared to take up this fight again now?!
:D

We seemed to be so close, just the wretched BSOD which we never resolved, if indeed it is possible to do so.
Is it worth exploring any other options, if there are any?
Cheers, Dave.

Well, go back to the driver that installs (once) without BSOD.

Post a link to that one.

Side notes (maybe relevant, maybe not).

1) is this the stupid laptop?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH70uz9X9ZY

2) it seems like (whatever it means) the processor/whatever is "Temash" and not "Kabini" (no idea if it can change anything)

Yes, that's the machine!
cdob said it was a Kabini right back at the end of March, but I'm not sure what he based that on.

The driver we came closest with was the Catalyst 14.4 package, which seems to be the very last version that's compatible with XP.
I'll have to see if I can find where I downloaded it from, it's so long ago!
Its INF file has entries up to and including Kabini PCI\VEN_1002&DEV9838.
My hardware is of course PCI\VEN_1002&DEV9839!
The INF has no mention of "Temash".

Well, the Kabini is mentioned here (as an example):
https://www.amd-drivers.com/amd-ati-mobility-drivers.html

I have no idea what Temash or Kabini actually mean, nor if it has any particular consequence.

From the little I can understand the HD 8180 exists in THREE forms (belonging to "Radeon Mobility" or "Mobility Radeon" family), one "discrete" (series HD8000M), one in "real" laptops (series HD8000G) and one in tablets or tablet like laptops/Notebook (APU A4-1200m HD 8180 only), see:

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-cat-win-13-9

It is evident how the good Elantech guys and the good AMD/Catalyst ones studied at the UNI on the same course "Misnaming things, how to confuse other people by naming the same thing with various different, random or semi-random names and using the one or the other (or yet another one just invented) as casually as possible".

And of course they also took the optional other course "Monolithic bloat: how to make a single driver covering ALL your hardware BUT leaving a few devices unsupported (without documenting which) to entertain your customers and have them busy many hours besides the lengthy download before they discover the driver won't work". ;)

The "latest version" of 14.4 (possibly 14.10.1006) seems like minimum Windows 7 :dubbio::
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-14-4

you will appreciate how in the above there is also this:

Quote

The following notebooks are not compatible with this release:

Any notebook launched after this driver release

but NO release date to compare with.

Very likely there is an "earlier version" (still 14.4) XP compatible (maybe, or maybe not).

This is the one, claims to be an XP compatible version of Catalyst 14.4.
AFAIK it's the last version of any ATI Catalyst software that's XP compatible.

https://download.cnet.com/ATI-Catalyst-Software-Suite-Windows-XP-32-bit/3000-2108_4-10159621.html

After adding my hardware ID to the INF, this appears to install fine, but it BSODs on reboot.

Thanks, that's a lot more sensible!
FWIW, here is the driver I found which (despite the file name) is supposedly Vista compatible, and contains my hardware ID.
It's the only apparently Vista compatible one which had the ID I could find, all the rest are Windows 7 or later.
I downloaded it in case i did decide to switch from XP to Vista on the notebook  but of course I've never tested it.

https://www.amd-drivers.com/download-RadeonHD8180-mobility-driver-for-WindowsVista-32bit.html

It takes forever to download BTW!

Maybe Doctor Frankenstein could use it along with the XP one..........

It seems like (in order to put into practice what they learned in the mentioned courses) the good AMD guys used in 13.6 Beta a structure *like*:

\Packages\
\Packages\Drivers\
\Packages\Drivers\Display\
now this would normally get them an F, so they use something like:
\Packages\Drivers\Display\W8_INF

and

\Packages\Drivers\Display\W86A_INF

in order to muddle the waters, possibly the first is 64 bit and the second is x86 , but the real touch of genius is that inside that folder, there is more than one .inf, *like*:

\Packages\Drivers\Display\W86A_INF\C7158083.inf
and

\Packages\Drivers\Display\W86A_INF\C8158083.inf

and of course a folder with a completely not connected name *like*:

\Packages\Drivers\Display\W86A_INF\B157935

containing the actual driver files.

The nice quirk (what made them get a B) is that the C7158083.inf and the C8158083.inf are almost identical but the first is for 7 and the second is for 8[1], and actually at the beginning of each .inf there is its human readable name, respectively atiiw7ag.inf and atiiw8ag.inf.

In order to get the A for the 13.12 version the driver you just posted a link to 13-12_win7_win8_32_dd_ccc_whql.exe has two .inf's:

CB162200.inf
and
CE162200.inf

where the human readable name has been removed.

The first has:

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTx86.6.3, NTx86.6.0, NTx86.6.1, NTx86.6.2

BUT ONLY:

[ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.3]

and the second has the SAME:

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTx86.6.2, NTx86.6.0, NTx86.6.1, NTx86.6.3

BUT ONLY:

[ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.2]

So, I have my doubts that it is Vista compatible. :dubbio:

Unless they play some other tricks.

jaclaz

[1] And the 7 one has:

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.1, NTamd64.6.0

[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]

and the 8 one has:

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.2

[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.2]

Well I did have my doubts about the Vista compatibility of that driver!
I guess the only way to know is to try and install it on a Vista machine.
I guess the install will fail at a very early stage if it isn't compatible.
Anyone with a Vista installation brave enough to try?!
:dubbio:
I was only hoping that, as with the touchpad driver, it might be possible to combine elements from two different drivers.
Of course the fundamental difference is that there were official XP drivers for Elan touchpads, but there were never any XP drivers for the HD8180 graphics hardware.

AND...

The actual 13-12_win7_win8_32_dd_ccc_whql.exe downloaded from https://www.amd-drivers.com/download-RadeonHD8180-mobility-driver-for-WindowsVista-32bit.html

has not the .inf files "declared":
CB162200.inf
CE162200.inf

but rather these:
CB166389.inf
CW166389.inf
CE166389.inf

I checked around, and there are (from other sources) other files named 13-12_win7_win8_32_dd_ccc_whql.exe around, identical to the above, but I also found one with different .inf's, like:
CB165817.inf
CE165817.inf
CW165817.inf

Yep, and reviewing past posts on this thread it is not like we did a much more clear work, the thread as usual goes like: try this, I tried it but it was no better than the other, no, not that one the other one, that I tested with the modified .inf, but not with that modified .inf, the other one, that once booted and then I couldn't reproduce, possibly because that time I was using another driver, etc.

Let's make some order, we have 3 (three) 2 (two) possible candidates:
1) https://driverpack.io/it/hwids/PCI\VEN_1002%26DEV_9834?os=windows-xp-x86 Filename: AMD-FORCED-Catalyst-5x86-drp.zip, Size 32 MB from now on referenced as "Forced3001"
2) https://archive.org/details/icafe-winxp-9.00.300.3010-beta1-br294594-sep24 Filename: icafe-winxp-9.00.300.3010-beta1-br294594-sep24.exe, Size 58 MB, from now on referenced as "iCafe3010"
32) http://web.archive.org/web/20150525015957/http://www2.ati.com/drivers/windows-xp-amd-catalyst-9.00.300.3005-dec9.exe Filename: windows-xp-amd-catalyst-9.00.300.3005-dec9.exe, Size 192 MB, from now on "ATI3005"

Can we agree on the above?

jaclaz

P.S. the "icaf3010" driver has not any provision for any "Kabini" processor/card, so it is out of the list.

1) the "Forced3001" uses the CX166904.inf and a directory containing the files B166713. The CX166904.inf DOES NOT contain a provision for your hardware.

2) the "ATI3005" uses the CX178340.inf and a directory containing the files B175198. The CX178340.inf DOES CONTAIN a provision for your hardware:

"%AMD9839.1%" = ati2mtag_Kabini_Mobile, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9839
...

AMD9839.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 8180"

Actual files in - respectively - B166713 and  B175198 are largely the same.

So, your best bet/first attempt should be to install the "ATI3005" as is, it should install without issues.

Try first to install it via the CX178340.msi, at least in theory it should work and be the "intended method" by the manufacturer (short of installing the whole bloated thingy with control panel and what not)

OK, sorry for the delay.

I did a complete ISO backup of the machine, and then tried installing ATI3005.

It appeared to install absolutely fine, but as expected, it doesn't work.
When I boot up, I get a message saying "No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your AMD hardware".

Rather strange considering that the installer recognised the HD8180 absolutely fine, and apparently installed the driver with no errors!

:dubbio:

I had to install the whole thing unfortunately, just running CX178340.msi gives the message "This package requires AMD Catalyst Install Manager to install. Would you like to launch AMD Catalyst Install Manager to install this package?"
So like a good boy, I did!
