Aeroglass stopped working Again

Recommended Posts

I've had this problem before, but this is a new instance of it.

All of a sudden, when I start my computer, I get this error message:

Aero Glass does not know how to hook your version of DMW (0X6001)
You should download appropriate symbols package for your operating system from Microsoft website
and press the Retry button.

I've tried all the solutions suggested when I had this error before, but to no avail.  I tried downloading and installing the latest version of Aeroglass (setup-wrs-1.5.11) but that didn't work either.

Is there a way to get that symbol file?  Am I putting it in the right place?

C:\AeroGlass\4DFDA14B2ACD35B23AC37976303DB51A1\dwmcore.pdb

I also tried this:

C:\AeroGlass\Symbols\4DFDA14B2ACD35B23AC37976303DB51A1\dwmcore.pdb

but that doesn't work either.

I'm really getting frustrated over this.  Why doesn't Microsoft just give us that look and feel as an option?  Why doesn't somebody come u p with a RELIABLE way to get transparent window titles back.  I tried glass2k, but that makes your whole window transparent... not what I want.

This is the exact error I get:

And here is a snippet of the debug log file:

I just had this yesterday after I turned Win Updates back on and got a cumulative update inadvertently.  I deleted the "symbols" folder in C:AeroGlass, turned off my firewall (temporarily), and clicked "cancel" on the Hook error window...symbols downloaded on the 2nd try.

I'm running 1903  Build 18362.239

I just upgraded to build 1903 and now I get a different error.  I get this message:

image.png.e3ee31c8662cc2bc190bef79eb4ba026.png

Further, when it completed "installing" it messed up my title color and my Chrome browser went black.

I ran this version: setup-wrs-1.5.11.exe

Windows 10, Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.239)

Hey guys, I have this problem too, but I'm not using Win10 1903, I'm still using 1803, after the update happened last night(a security update) my symbol files don't work anymore, having the same issue, updating the files but it's still having this '0x0061'

"Invalid symbol type 0 for module udwm.dll" and "Invalid symbol type 4 for module dwmcore.dll" in the debug log

Ok, I learned a few things about this system, so I'll document them here.

There is an "experimental" version of Aero Glass for Windows 10, which downloads to a single .dll file called (DMWGlass.dll).  It would be nice if someone provided instructions how to install it, but I figured out how and will provide instructions here:

1. Download and install the latest version of glass (setup-wrs-1.5.11.exe).  If you have build 1903, this will fail with the message "Your system does NOT support this version of the software".  Ignore this message and proceed.

2. Go to the Experimental page and download.  It will download an archive containing a single file (DMWGlass.dll).

3. Copy your AeroGlass installation directory (I used the default, C:\AeroGlass) to a dummy directory, then un-install AeroGlass.

4. Remove any files and delete the directory.

5. Rename your dummy directory (C:\AeroGlassDummy) to C:\AeroGlass.

6. Copy the experimental .dll file to C:\AeroGlass, overwriting the one that's there.

7. Download this file:  http://www.glass8.eu/out/schedule.bat , copy it to your installation directory and run it as an administrator.

8. Log off and log back on.  Aero Glass is scheduled to run on startup.  You will see a compatibility error message, press cancel, and wha la. you have Aero Glass back (well, sort of).

The problem with this version is it gives you completely transparent window captions... I mean, they look like clear glass.  Since this is clearly buggy, I decided to uninstall it for now and wait for him to come out with a version for this build that actually works.

You can change the opacity settings using AeroGlassGUI.
You can find it on the Aero Glass download page
http://glass8.eu/download
It's the "Testing version of GUI application to modify Aero Glass parameters" link under Others.

  1. Run the GUI as administrator.
  2. Select "Current User".
  3. Change to "Accent" tab.
  4. Use the opacity slider.

I also tried this:

C:\AeroGlass\Symbols\4DFDA14B2ACD35B23AC37976303DB51A1\dwmcore.pdb

but that doesn't work either.

You got some wrong information if you're wondering where to get/put the symbol file. You run a script that does it for you. Some people have posted them on this forum in the past. I wrote a new one recently, you can find it here. Use the Download ZIP button, you'll find it in the downloaded ZIP file in the only folder that's in there.

This particular script requires that Debugging Tools for Windows are installed, it's a part of Windows SDK. You can find the SDK download links here. Pick the installer option and when it asks which components to install, deselect everything Except Debugging Tools for Windows.

Now you can run the script and the required symbols should be downloaded. Should fix your issue with incompatibility error and clear transparency (have to log off or terminate Desktop Window Manager with Task Manager for changes to take effect).

Why doesn't somebody come u p with a RELIABLE way to get transparent window titles back.

Because nobody else has the skills/interest. Aero Glass is as reliable as it comes, just needs occasional manual intervention with symbols unless you donate. The thing with symbols is explained here.

There's no point running as admin if you're going to choose Current user. Anyway, it won't solve OP's issue since it's not a configuration issue in this case.

  1. Always run programs for configuring etc. as administrator. Avoids possible issues.
  2. It solves OPs latest problem, the one I quoted. I had the same "issue".

Aero Glass never defaults to clear transparency unless someone or something changed its settings or in some cases when it doesn't have all necessary information it needs, hence the incompatibility message.

Running GUI config utility as admin to change current user's settings is about the same as running web browser as admin every time you want to change its settings. Besides, you're already changing other compositor settings not specific to Aero Glass extension, which are stored in the same location, as regular user either through Control Panel or Settings app.

Thank you so much for this! It worked perfectly on Windows 10 1909!

I read your post and follow the quote. Thanks to UCyborg and you.

(My problem solved by help from one user that upload his symbols and put them in AG folder. Now I find how I can download symbols myself)
