The resulting CD installed on MS Virtual PC without any issues.

After running MS Update, the following items showed as required -

Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP KB817778   Q327405: Recommended Update (HU1002_PRO.EXE)Windows Messenger 4.7

The above were not included in the setup by choice. I see no reasons why they cannot be added if you so wish!

Hope this helps some.

What problems? All you have to make sure is check that WININET.DLL is version 6.0.2800.1405. But you haven't replied yet in the other thread.

If its not, then Q831167.exe should be installed after Q832894.exe.

Windows Update may not say you need anything, because the hotfix imports registry entries during the installation, which WU depends on for checking if they're installed, it doesn't check the files itself. So WU can be wrong sometimes.

@AaronXP: I didn't reply to your previous post because I though that your question was not for me :) and because I was busy to try to use IEXPRESS to repack Q831167.exe.

I'm using XPCREATE, so I thing the only way to install Q831167 after Q832894 is to repack it and put in the SVC-MSX folder (as said Blyster in the other post).

WININET.DLL is version 6.0.2800.1405. But I got errors after installing these 2 HF. The errors are the following (always the same when something was wrong during the installation):

  • A Internet Explorer folder is created in %SystemRoot%\ (it is containing only the 2 files: Q831167.cat & Q832894.cat).
  • The %ProgramFiles%\internet explorer\ folder is containing only 1 folder and nothing else: connection wizard (note that the "internet explorer" folder name is not capitalized).
  • The screen resolution is 800x600 (my WINNT.SIF set it to 1280x1024, and when everything is well installed, this is this 1280x1024 resolution which is used).

This should be everything, except 817778, which I install via GuiRunOnce.

@Bluelane: The "new" switches are not implemented by XPCREATE. The "old" switches work fine. I have heard rumours that these poorly thought out "new" switches will be dropped, and I hope they are ... Also, there should be no need to manually edit the SVCPACK.INF file ...

@mdes: Something surely looks wrong if you get the directories you described. I am not convinced it is XPCREATE, but I will try to test the French Version soon ... If you take out these two updates, or one of them, is everything else OK? The WININET.DLL file slipstreamed onto the CD is the correct version, as you noticed.

:) When putting these 1 HF, I encounter the problem I described in my porst above.

I remove Q831167_IE6_SP1.exe, and everything goes well, but WININET.DLL has the version 6.0.2800.1400. Windows Update said there is still 831167, 817778 (normal) and .NET Fw 1.1 French (very strange) missing.

@GM: There are some differences with my files and their locations:

Everything is nearly OK  It was a hardware problem: old CD-Writer with bad CD-RW not detected by Windows installation (ie no error message during install :), but bad install).

the same here, the following updates are still showing up in WindowsUpdate:

Citical Updates:

KB837001

KB828741

KB835732

816093 (this one I've never got before, it's a kind of Microsoft VM update)

Recommended Updates:

KB833998

All others seem to be fine and installed correctly. I couldn't find any weird entries in the XPCREATE.LOG, everything looked fine during the creation of the new CD. The mentioned updates do exist on the new CD as well, so I don't understand why there where not installed correctly.

Anyone any idea what went wrong?

I have seen Windows Update malfunction for a day or two. It has been known to declare that patches are missing and then find them when you try another day. My latest install from a GreenMachine CD that included the same April updates worked fine however. For me, Windows Update saw no problems.

i'll try to rebuild again in a couple days then.....hopefully its just WU messin up.

Study time

I think I found the problem. Silly me to just use a program to automatically download the hotfixes. :) Bad Jono

(I'm not saying it's your fault, but of course i didn't look at the files before using them :D )

The files i download are the correct ones, but they are the Web updates. 284KB file sizes as opposed to the normal 2-3 meg. Yeah.....

I'll check back after the test.

Haza!! It was the wrong files. If there was a internet connection available, it would have worked, but there wasn't. Darn those wrong files.
