Now that I entered the proper settings, it seems to have fixed the infinite redirect!

Now I'm getting error 0x80072f78.

@cc333 Normally you need these updates to fix the error. But I don't know if it works in W2k3.

One thing is clear. The mentioned updates are for Windows XP Embedded and definitely not for Server 2003. So that won't work.  and truth be told a bit off-topic.

Well I do have HTTPSProxy running all the time, as I need it to display my e-mails properly in Eudora.

@Dave-H Just for you I'll change my automatic updates setting to "Notify me but don't automatically dowload or install them" and report what will happen and if such entries will appear in my event log. You know we've made our systems a bit comparable.

Well, if there are 64-bit versions available and they're not already installed, it probably won't hurt anything to try and see what happens....

EDIT:  These updates had already been installed in my 32-bit XP VM, which probably explains why it worked.

EDIT #2:  The updates seem to be specific to POSReady 2009, so looks like I'm out of luck maybe?

Thanks, but I was thinking more of whether @maile3241is getting the error messages, as they seem to already have automatic updates enabled.
I'm not sure how it could show the yellow shield if it can't connect.

Well, further checking says that 64-bit W2k3 compatible versions exist for 4019276, 4493435, 942288 and probably the Root Certificate Update, so hopefully that's enough?

Otherwise, I guess we'll have to determine if the fix or fixes included in 4467770 are somehow recreate-able or re implement-able in a W2k3 x64-compatible form.  Or maybe an otherwise incompatible update (from Vista x64, say) has something relevant that can be coerced into working on 2k3?

In the meantime, I'm away from home at the moment, but when I get back, I'll try installing all the other updates as needed and see what happens...

I was in error earlier.  Only one of the four updates has a 2k3 x64 version.

I think I've reached a dead end maybe?

Ok, you have HTTPSProxy running all the time. Therefore you can try to enable option Automatically detect settings in LAN settings of Internet Options to ensure that WUA can find your proxy automatically.

Run as administrator the command wuauclt /detectnow to check the connection with the Windows Update server. If wuauclt.exe succeeds, Event ID 30 is added in Event Viewer.

wuauclt /detectnow appears to do nothing, and there's no event in the Event Viewer.
I guess that means it's not working!
It doesn't generate the error message either.
I'll try changing the LAN settings.
Obviously i'm not expecting the shield to pop up in the system tray again anytime soon, but it would be interesting to see if it's possible to get the automatic checks working again.

You can uninstall some update and try again. 

Pick one for which you have the installer locally though, just in case

 

 

About that error, maybe try to delay the WU service startup until your proxy is running. 

There is an "Automatic (delayed)" option in newer Windows, not sure if you can set it in XP through the registry. 

Or set the service to manual/disabled, then run it later from a startup batch file.

Different PIDs and different memory usage.

One instance works as a service (server part), another one works as GUI (client part). Some programs use different files for different tasks, some allow to close GUI and run only service, if you don't need to change configuration or see tray notifications...

Open Task Manager on Processes tab, turn on "Show processes for all users", ensure that you have Username column visible and look how many svchost.exe instances you can see - one running as NETWORK SERVICE user, some running as LOCAL SERVICE user, some other as SYSTEM.

As promised I changed my automatic settings for testing purpose. Searching for updates on MU web site shows one important update is missing but Automatic Updates Control Panel File wuaucpl.cpl doesn't work. No pop up of shield in systray, no entries in event manager. I tried different settings and changed proxy configuration but so far without any success.
