On decommissioning of update servers for 2000, XP, (and Vista?) as of July 2019

Looks as if the servers are down for some form of maintenance, as trying to load the windows update site results in an HTTP 503 error. This might be Microsoft adding the final office 2010 updates. Or it could be them cutting off the website as a whole. Im getting HTTP 500 when trying to access Microsoft Update. Windows Update is 503.

Is there anyway someone could create an unofficial sha2 code signing support update for Windows XP? If someone manages to accomplish this it could allow Microsoft Update to function again on Windows XP as well as allow some internet connected apps that no longer support SHA1 to begin functioning again. I would attempt to do it myself but unfortunately I do not know the first thing about programming.

With the source code leak, it might be very possible, but AFAIK might require a major rewrite of portions of the OS with no compatibility guarantees.

Not to mention the plethora of legal problems involved....

I don't think we'd need source code anyway (which is for XP SP1/2003 RTM, which are quite different from the XP SP3/2003 SP2 that most people use nowadays).

A good start would be to extract the Server 2008 SHA2 updates and look at the applicable files. Indeed I have done a hack that got marginally improved SHA256 support on Windows 2000 using POSReady crypto libs.

/!\ Doesn't work anymore, use the proxy method :

Guys, I have good news : A solution has been found to make XP and server 2003 compatible with SHA-2 updates!  Special thanks to daniel_k and abbodi1406 on Mydigitalife for the work :https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/windows-update-for-2000-xp-2003-and-vista-is-die-august-2020.82143/page-5

Some registry hacks and patched wuaugen.dll and voilà!

A 7zip file contains all necessary files :

It works!

Works for me too, I think!

At least I don't get "Diagnose Connection Problems" anymore in IE8.

Not sure how useful this is, since updates aren't being released for XP anymore, but still nice to see! But then I get:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

For self-help options:

Frequently Asked Questions

Find Solutions

Windows Update Newsgroup

For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

But I borked the update catalog on a different OS here a few days ago, and maybe the catalog blacklisted me or something, who knows. Have to use a proxy in order to access it now!

Still working fine here, although it can take a couple of attempts to load.

For those it's not working for, did you replace wuaueng.dll in the dllcache folder as well as in system32?
If you don't, Windows File Protection will just put the old version straight back again!
:)
