OK, this is strange. I'm at WMP 9; when I try to install WMP10, I get this error dialog:

wmp10err.PNG.632c6e81ff90bd5a3245403236bdf233.PNG

Clicking "Details" brings up this screen:wmp10hlp.PNG.c18763872c4390db8bf25c490471b383.PNG

Clicking the link in that brings me to a page that offers me WMP11.

I'm guessing I have something installed that makes WMP10 think I have Windows Vista or 2000 or something instead of XP, but these messages give me no clue....

@Mathwiz

have you looked into this: Error message when you try to install Windows Media Player 10 on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer: "This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows"

I know that the article says SP2, but that's likely because SP3 hadn't been released yet at the time WMP10 came out. It may also affect SP3 too.

Thanks @sdfox7, I do have the Windows Media Format 11 Run-time installed.

Quote

You must first uninstall the Windows Media Format 11 run-time before you can install Windows Media Player 10.

I was wondering if that might be the problem, but the error message did nothing to point me in that direction, and I didn't want to just randomly start uninstalling things that might be the problem, only to discover it didn't help.

Edit: That worked.

Of course, after installing WMP10, I wanted to re-install Windows Media Format 11 run-time on @heinoganda's recommendation:

On 12/2/2018 at 2:19 AM, heinoganda said:

Windows Media Player 11 is not a must, but windows media 11 runtime (wmfdist11.exe, most recent for Windows XP) can be used without any problem even if an older Windows Media Player (9,10) is installed. This ensures that programs that are runtime-dependent on the latest windows media runtime display smoothly.

:)

... but the installation program, wmfdist11.exe, wasn't on my system! I found a link to wmfdist11.exe at https://softfamous.com/postdownload-file/windows-media-format-runtime/4431/884/. Note: this site is slow! But the file seems to be genuine; Microsoft's digital signature is present.

Note: wmfdist11.exe seems to obviate the need for most of the above updates, including the hot-fix. I ran Microsoft Update before installing it, and all the above updates (except the hot-fix) were listed. But instead of installing the updates I installed wmfdist11.exe and ran MU again; afterwards only KB973540 & KB973540 were listed, and when I tried to install the hot-fix, it said it was already installed.

@Mathwiz

It is an incorrect way of getting wmfdist11.exe (and Your source is very outdated). Proper way:

1.  Download official WMP11 distribution from official source:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/9/5/0953E553-3BB6-44B1-8973-106F1B7E5049/wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe

2. Unpack this distribution using WinRAR 5.70 or similar archiver. You should get 26 files from it. One of these files will be the latest available wmfdist11.exe

3. Run wmfdist11.exe unpacked on step 2.:w00t:

@Mathwiz

Windows media 11 runtime (WMFDist11-WindowsXP-X86-ENU.exe) I could not find more in MS, but in Media Player 11 included (files "umdf.exe", "wmfdist11.exe" and "WindowsXP-MSCompPackV1-x86.exe" with WinRAR or 7zip extract). First install Media Player 10, then "umdf.exe", "wmfdist11.exe" and "WindowsXP-MSCompPackV1-x86.exe".

The following updates are required for this combination:

KB929399-v2
KB941569
KB952069-v2
KB973540
KB954155
KB972187
KB978695
KB975558
KB2834904-v2
KB3033890
KB3067903
