Beware of Office 2010 Updates!

Recommended Posts

No less that eight updates offered today for Office 2010 64 bit on the Windows 10 side of my machine!
In no particular order -

KB4484494 (Word)
KB4484497 (Outlook)
KB4484375 (Office)
KB4484461 (Excel)
KB4484379 (Office)
KB4484385 (Access)
KB4484454 (Office)
KB4092435 (PowerPoint)

No sign of them being offered on XP needless to say!

Updates for MS Office 2010 still install on Windows XP (KB4484454 and KB4092435 were even offered by Microsoft Update) - except that after installing KB4484454, you traditionally have to roll back to the old version of mso.dll.
Links to offline installers for these patches are provided in the applicable Microsoft bulletins:

When was that?
Were they offered before Microsoft Update was withdrawn as far as XP is concerned?
I've never seen them.

Mea culpa! The "update history" shows that it was actually different: MU reported these 2 updates on Windows 10, and since there were offline installers for both of these patches, I downloaded and installed them manually on Windows XP.
Which does not change the fact that updates to MS Office 2010 can still be installed in Windows XP.

Finally got around to installing the patches, all OK apart from, as has been said, KB4484454 which contains another XP incompatible MSO.DLL.
All fine as usual after the old one was put back.
:thumbup
Let's hope the next two batches of Office 2010 updates, which will be the last ones, are still signed with SHA1 so they will install on XP.
It will be very annoying if they aren't when it's so near to EOS anyway!

  • 4 weeks later...

Four updates today.

KB4484530 (Office)
KB4484532 (Office)
KB4486660 (Word)
KB4486665 (Excel)

KB4484530 contains another XP incompatible version of MSO.DLL.

All downloaded from the Update Catalogue and installed manually.

I guess next month's updates, if any, will be the last!

Thanks so much for keeping us informed on this.  I am have been using a saved off MSO.DLL to keep Office 2010 going on XP, as I found out how to do on this thread.  Thanks so much!

But, several weeks ago, I found out that both of my XP systems won't run Microsoft Update any more.

So, I can't even look at my history.  Is Microsoft Update gone?  Of is it just gone for XP?  Or might I have another problem?

Thanks for any help!

I get a connection problem message...

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Microsoft shut down Windows Update for XP, Vista and older, but it should still work for Windows 7 and newer provided that SHA-2 support has been installed: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4569557/windows-update-sha-1-based-endpoints-discontinued

Just as an off-topic aside, if you want to still see your update history, get the wonderful Mr. Nir Sofer's free WinUpdatesList program from here.
That will show you all the updates you have made, including (on XP) what files they replaced!
As long as your update history files remain intact, that should always work.

... Though the author himself, in a red-lettered top notice, recommends instead to migrate to his more current utility, WinUpdatesView (v1.13) ... :P

This is true, but I like to see the file update information in the older version.
It doesn't do that on Windows versions newer than XP though, so the later version would probably be better on later operating systems.

Amazingly, two updates today!
KB4092435 (PowerPoint)
KB4484497 (Outlook)
Both offered and installed through Microsoft Update, which I was pretty convinced would never work again!
No MSO.DLL replacement.
Why these were suddenly rolled out a couple of weeks before the next Patch Tuesday, when I was expecting the very last set of updates for Office 2010, I have no idea!
:)
