Hello, all. I am trying to get the audio working on a Dell Optiplex 170L (865 chipset) with Windows 98 SE. I have all of the other drivers installed, the video was a little tricky, but i got it eventually.

Here is the information from the Unknown Devices utility.

Quote

* Windows Description - PCI Multimedia Audio Device
* Hardware ID - VEN_8086&DEV_24D5&SUBSYS_017A1028&REV_02
* Device Category (Class) - Unknown
* Enumerator - PCI

* Detected Chip Vender - Intel Corporation
* Detected Chip Device - 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
* Detected Vender - Dell Computer Corp
* Detected Device - SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

* Device Status Flags - Detected, Unknown, Present, Not Phantom, Category Visable

Thanks for any help... really don't want to use a PCI sound card if i don't have to.

P.S. On the dell forum a long time ago some guy said He got it working, but didn't state how.

Thanks! that worked... I didn't think to try ones that didn't explicity say they worked with 98se (that one appears to be for 2000+)

It works perfectly!

...and that one was right on thew drivers page for this sytem on dells site...if only I had been adventurous when I saw it before.
