Corrupt Java Install

I recently used the built-in uninstaller to remove Java 8 after it started giving me problems. Now I am unable to reinstall it when I click on the jxpinstall the process opens up in task manager and then it suddenly quits without giving me any error message and the installer never runs. The same thing happens when I try to open jdk-8u161-windows-i586. It does not matter whether I use the offline or online installer as both do the same thing. I believe the uninstaller failed to remove the previous installation fully and as such there are leftover traces of the previous install that are preventing me from reinstalling Java. Thus, I would like for someone to tell me all the files related to the Java program and its registry entries so I can manually remove them.

Thanks everyone for the input. Java JRE 8 Update 162 is also working for me on Windows XP.

I downloaded the file from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html (alternate http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/jre-8u162-windows-i586.tar.gz) and extracted this to my desktop, which gives you a folder called "jre-8u162-windows-i586".

I then took that folder and placed it in C:\Program Files\Java, deleting the previous "152" folder. Java now works correctly.

The only other thing I needed to do was update my Start Menu shortcuts, because they were previously directing to the "152" folder which no longer exists, since it is replaced by "162". I just had to edit the shortcut path and change "152" to "162".

Thank you everyone who looked into this!

I did a different procedure. I renamed the C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_152 folder C:\Program Files\Java\good_old_java, then created a new, empty, C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_152 folder and dropped the contents of jre-8u162-windows-i586.tar.gz inside it. It's safer, because, otherwise, there are too many registry entries containing the path to java to be corrected, which is tiresome and prone to errors.

Are you sure?

Yes. I have similar output in the IE addons window, but when i try the "check your Java version" web page i get the empty rectangle with small red cross instead of Java aplet.

UPD: the page start to work again in IE (and recommend me to update) just after i return the previous content to the Java installation folder (which is "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_152\" in my case).

There must be a setting somewhere we must find to enable it working in IE8.
As it is, we can get it working only in FF esr 52.6.0, IE8 and New Moon 27.7.0a2.
In any case, I can live with that, for the time being. As I said, for me, IE8 is just for MU.

Your link doesn't work as it stands, as it bypasses the license acceptance procedure.

You have to go here first to get the file as far as I can see -

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html

:)

@Dave-H

Anyone can accept the license agreement, or you can use my direct link. I'll update the link in my previous post.
