As an Administrator account, I have removed the Apps and Packages folder (I think they were in \Windows, but it might've been in \ProgramData).  I'm trying out this fxxmetro app, but it doesn't appear to actually speed up anything.  Although the Metro engine ain't running.

:)

I believe so.  It has always worked for me without detriment.  Now if I turn off Classic Shell, I still get the charms and the start screen, but the apps are gone (besides in the Administrator account [which I rename], you can't run Metro apps anyway.)

Here's a script you can use to uninstall the new Metro apps:

Remove Windows Store apps in Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

And here's a tutorial on how to manually uninstall them:

How to uninstall an App in Windows 8

This is how I removed all the apps using PowerShell:

Get-AppXPackage -Allusers | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage –online

I learned about that here: Completely disabling Metro apps in Windows 8.1

Note: There are a few apps that Windows will simply refuse to remove.

You can get rid of charms by renaming two dlls.
