Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista

Server 2008 also has the Extended Security Update program like Windows7. The KB numbers are public and can be downloaded through the microsoft catalog. But can't be installed on windows server 2008 without some more or less legal patching of windows update dll's.

As far as i know, they run on an unpatched windows vista but, just like any other server 2008 update, might not work as intended.

Hey guys, I followed your thread with high interest and installed the update pack from mega.nz link plus the monthly updates till 2020-03 (see down below), but I am getting a DWM crash every 20 minutes, even if its just idle-ing.

Any idea? I tried several Intel GMA 965 drivers, they don't cause it.

This metod works: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/bypass-windows-7-extended-security-updates-eligibility.80606/page-150#post-1596140

2. Create a shortcut of the executable.
3. Right click on the shortcut and go to Properties.
4. On the Target box, add this: /msioptions "ESU_LOCK=2D40812E-974C-4EA2-8DCC-63C992D505B9" (make sure to add a space before adding it)
5. Click Apply and OK.
6. Run the shortcut and proceed with the installation.

Yesterday I resurrected a Vista installation that hasn't been booted since 2012. I was able to get Update to work and it supplied me with 191 important updates and 4 optional. All of the important updates installed successfully, I didn't bother with the optional.

At this point, if I install the January 2020 Server 2008 updates -

kb4536953 (SSU)

kb4534303 (Monthly)

kb4534251 (IE9)

KB4535105 (.NET Security & Quality Rollup)

- Will that bring me fully up-to-date or are there any other items that need to be added? I'm not wanting to try the Extended Support updates just yet!

Good to know, however on my PC I've noticed that even mid-2019 or earlier updates to .NET framework 4.6.x on Vista cause VS2010 and a couple of other programs to start upon startup. So at this point I'm not updating .NET 4.6.2.

I went ahead and tried kb4536953 (SSU). Failed to install with a warning relating to the SHA-2 requirement.

Installed kb4474419-v4 (SHA-2 update). Tried kb4536953 again but still refused to install.

Installed the April 2019 kb4493730 SSU successfully.

Tried kb4536953 again and this time it went in without complaint.

Proceeded to kb4534303 (Monthly) and kb4534251 (IE9) and .NET updates appropriate to my system. No issues and the PC seems to be operating normally.

So its up-to date as far as January 2020, unless there are any other updates not rolled into kb4534303. Have I missed anything?

Unlike patches for Windows 6.0 per se, the Server 2008 security updates for IE9 never listed Vista as an applicable OS in the extractable text document. It does not follow that installation is blocked on Vista. However, installation might very well be blocked unless sha2 support has been properly installed. The last dual-signed cumulative update for IE9 was KB4507434 in July 2019.
