Redoing Updates to 2k laptop dont know what files i need.

whelp the old 30GB Hard drive in my old Dell X200 gave out today (went to fire it up as i didnt feel like lugging my 98 Machine to my game room and its monitor and i neede dto flash a new ROM to my old PS1 Gameshark 2.1 cart. (the old ones that plugged into the Parallel I/O on older PS1's) ) its a lil easier to know whats neede din 98 (Autopatcher/USESP3.56 and kernelEX for 98)  but i dont understand Japanese for didly (i know maybe just enough to ask for a few thinsg should i ever visit the country) and Google translate does NOT help much w/ translating @blackwingcat's windows 2k Page.

theres v28c i see and Extended Core?

are the ones i want Windows2000-KB935839-v28iG-x86-ENU.exe & Windows2000-KB979683-v16a-x86-ENU.exe ? and i belive i should also get USP5 "HFSLIP2000-FullPack.7z" ? and in what order should i install things?

My preferred method for installing Windows 2000 is as follows, in the order I have below:

Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (https://web.archive.org/web/20051022095019/http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/6/a/e6a04295-d2a8-40d0-a0c5-241bfecd095e/w2ksp4_en.exe)

Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Security Rollup Package (SRP) (https://web.archive.org/web/20060320020710/http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/7/b/27b1d1a3-0299-4336-b88a-22b9f09817e2/Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE)

Install UURollup (I'm using v11 from 11/30/2014) (https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bw_nt4aAJIoPMERXRHRXWE80UDA&export=download)

With these all installed, even the latest Adobe Flash Player 25 (25.0.0.148 released this week) will work on Windows 2000, even though "official support" was dropped with Adobe Flash Player 12.

Blackwingcat's package is a "specialty" set for adding new Exports, way beyond your needs (there's a thread somewhere talking about the mods). You could just go with Win2K+HFSLIP package, or just try Mr. Fox' suggestion (also a good option) to see it that gets you where you want to go. In any case, you'll probably have everything you need/want for your immediate needs and you can "compare" later. After all, it shouldn't take that long for reloads, should it? The difference between the two (AFAICR) is that HFSLIP has the individual original MS Fix files and UURollup is a kind of "Service Pack". BTW, I believe the SRP is also in HFSLIP (but can't be sure ATM unless I dig onto my HDD). FWIW, I *think* UURollup has "some" of BWC already in it (stable).

May be helpful or not but I have had trouble getting 2K to access the Windows Update site on multiple new installations and it appears that the following are needed (forgive me if I have missed something)

1. USP5.1, Windows Installer 3.1
2. Windows Update Agent 3.0
3. Root Certificates (latest - I used BWC March 2017)
4. Update KB842773 - the direct link is here (http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/d/8/5d802926-6bab-45fa-b96e-bee15413523b/Windows2000-KB842773-x86-ENU.EXE)

Number 4 is the BITS2.0 and HTTP 5.1 update. Up until I installed that I kept getting an error on the page when trying to load the ActiveX.

Apologies if I've stated the obvious or missed something but this has driven me crazy for the past few days

Forget it. It's over. Never gonna happen. That's why you have to use "End Of Line" updates provided/stashed away. Microsoft transitioned from "MS Updates" v4 to v6 server a long time ago and left v4 in the dust (they pressed the DEL key). The same happened to Win9x a long time ago. Even XP/Server2003 is getting the shaft (lucky if WebArchive has any, Catalog still has them so far...).

Really? Last I knew, WU was at v6, and 2000 worked fine with that (basically the same as XP).

And just yesterday, I opened up WU on my XP machine, and it works fine, albeit slowly.

I agree, however, that Microsoft seems intent on erasing any evidence of the existence of anything older than Windows 10 nowadays, which is too bad. They may be EOL, but they're still perfectly usable with some work.

I said WU was at v6. How many Updates did WU offer on the Win2k (I'm curious)? That's the reason I have an archive of all Updates for Win9x's, Win2000, WinXP, and Win2003. Rather than dance with WU, get all of the updates and integrate.

BTW, WU doesn't work with anything less than IE6 SP1. Maybe that's his problem? If all of the Updates are installed (correctly) then (even with WU v6 accessible), what's the point of even using it?
