That suggests they won't purposely block XP installations of future versions, but they can't guarantee compatibility if they add some new code that doesn't work on XP. It's actually the opposite effect than intended. Internet Explorer 8, the final version to run on XP and Server 2003, is still the second most used version behind Internet Explorer 11. According to the changelog, WinRAR 5.40 dropped "support" for XP without SP3. The changelog indicates "support" dropped for XP <SP2, but I just found that it still works even on Windows 2000. Surely it would work on XP SP2; 2000 SP4 and XP SP2 are very similar OS's. XP SP2 has few hundreds of more api than 2000 sp4 XP and 2k3 are far similar in their api and internal structure but it should not be done incase of 2k. Your average user is not going to be using a server OS, nor will they have paid $999 for just the Standard Edition of the OS. I would also note that 2000/XP are similar enough in system requirements. Server 2003 has higher minimum requirements than 2000/XP. Finally, if you run Server 2003 64-bit, you will find much less software support than 2000/XP. With that out of the way, Windows 2000 still complains about TzSpecificLocalTimeToSystemTime, and would probably get to uxtheme and EncodePointer eventually. If you have a patch for Windows 2000 that extends it so that XP programs run, then it is right to say that it runs on 2000+patchX, but not 2000 SP4 by itself. What is that update by the way? WinRAR does not require SP3. Programs that do, fail with GetLogicalProcessorInformation. I suppose MSIE is by design meant to run only on current versions of Windows. It is unfortunate that is integrated into the system so much, and, among other things, depends on SSL DLLs that the system uses for other purposes. This was originally Windows 2000 RTM from February 2000. The only updates I used were Service Pack 4, the Service Pack 4 Security Rollup (SRP), and the UURollup from 2014. I am not sure if WinRAR 5.50 would run without those major updates. I prefer those updates (minimum SP4) because they improve functionality and stability of the system. You CANNOT install just the UURollup! Many people think you will get all the updates by doing so, but you will not.
