Just a little Win7 rant

Win7 SP1 isn't bad and I certainly prefer it to Win8-10, but..

..is it overall less stable than WinXP SP3 or what?

I have it on a new pc since a year (yeah..) and it's like the 5th time I had to restore the system to a previous SR point, because of some sudden weird problem (sadly, only Sfc and no Dism for it).

The old XP ran on a single poor hdd, in furnace-case with crappy hardware, with only 1.5Gb RAM, with hundreds of programs & s**t and still managed to last years without issues.

My hardware seems good, so.. WTF?

P.s: Win8-10 aren't certainly immune from such errors, but I haven't tested them as much as the others (and won't).

I feel your pain :l

I like Windows 7, but I actually like Vista more than it.
Windows 7 is straight up bloated compared to XP (Sometimes Vista!).
Unfortunately sometimes we're forced to use it because of programs companies forcefully block XP :l
My school used really bad tiny computers which were pretty slow even with XP, once they "upgraded" to 7 all the computers could barely be used for typing.

Dear anime friend, I thank you for the reply, but.. I didn't mention Vista, because it was worse than both Win XP and 7 :P
Win7 isn't slow anymore on new PCs, but I'm simply baffled by how often it seems to corrupt without apparent reason.

Maybe it's just a Windows intrinsic problem, as these cases aren't so rare even with new versions.
I recently saw it on a Win8.1: new laptop kept offline, no usb sticks, no new installations, no hw errors, and occasionally used only for Libreoffice.. system suddenly messed up.. how!?
And Win10? Thanks for the "hidden" fast startup (silly) feature, it ends up staying on for weeks, until it starts behaving really crazy. (and this is only one of its problems)

I've had no problems. I run a Win7 Pro x86 with no antivirus (MSSE barely counts) daily with no major issues or need for reinstall or system restore. Of course, on all my PCs my browsers run with scripting disabled by default.

Windows 8 and 10 are designed to be online. Even the Embedded versions need an internet connection at some point.

Weird. How long since the last install then? Is it your main machine? Do you keep it on more than 1 day?
(also, did you mean Win7 x64 like your profile says?)

I see my install as Feb 20, 2010. It is 32bit. It is my main computer as far as productivity goes. I no longer play games on it, made a new computer for that and it is 64bit. It is on 24/7 as long as there is power. I use it as a way to communicate with myself by way of AOL. Using 2 accounts I can IM myself things to look at later, send reminders to do things. Also able to verify the status of things in my home... basically if my other AOL account is signed in, it means I have power and internet. :)

Of course, I realise that every computer is different and everyone uses them differently. I often see people say things like how Windows will corrupt itself, or get slow after too much time and you need to reinstall. This simply isn't true. All it shows is that a person is not using their computer properly, and are in a repeating pattern of this bad behaviour which results in their needing to reinstall often. People also often tend to ignore the little things their OS may do, the warning signs of something coming down the road. And they do this until the thing becomes unusable. If you ever helped a friend or family with their computer, usually you find they wait until the thing is totally broken before they do something about it.

In my experience, my most common cause for an issue is hardware related. If I am to install a program and it does not work properly, or causes some problem and I cannot find a way to resolve it, I don't use it. I only keep things installed that have some use. I do not update unless it is required for operation (and no alternative can be found) or for a security related issue that can actually impact me personally. I do not use websites or portions of websites that require me to sacrifice my browser's security (and thus my OS) ever, and I use different browsers for different services and purposes.

That is probably the best way I can put it.

Wait, do you mean you're using it mostly to see reminders? O_o
I guess it's not exactly useful for a comparison with my pc then.

I'm not one of those that reinstalls at the minimum problem and I try to fix errors when possible. I'm not exactly a noob either.
5 restores (not reinstalls) in a year aren't even that bad, but.. I expected a better performance than Xp.

Well when I am not home, it doesn't need to be doing anything. :P

How are we supposed to compare computers? Do I need to post a list of installed programs? Why would it matter? No it isn't just being used for reminders. What is it that your computer is doing when you are not home?

I'm using it for work, games and everything else.
I use it all day and keep it on a lot, so I can't compare its stability with basically an idle pc (if I understood it correctly).

Anyway I still appreciate the replies, so thanks.

You didn't. I used an example and you make it sound like that is all this PC is used for.

In fact, I have found this PC has been on without a restart for nearly a year prior to stopping to use it to play games.

Well, it didn't sound much like an example.
It seemed like standard low usage for a few hours a day.
Anyway, amen.

theres nothing wrong with 7
if there is screw up, its from user side, and its far more stable than XP, especially with XP's verclsid bug and desktopheap low limit

I would like to hear more about it if you can elaborate. :) AFAIK, XP's shared desktop heap can be increased to perform well on modern systems. I've used this Reg tweak for years.

What bug is there in verclsid.exe? Is it an unpatched bug? :)
