Windows Defender Offline

Hi guys!:D

I started a topic about injecting drivers into Windows Defender Offline...here

I have tried recently to use Windows Defender Offline to check for viruses etc....but it isn't allowing me to use the software...

I am getting "This app requires up-to-date virus and spyware definitions. You'll need to install the latest definition updates before scanning your PC." The scan options are greyed out so the app cannot be used...

I have updated to cd before using it but still comes up the same...I try to update it from the cd which used to work most of the time and it can update itself....

I have checked this on many computers now and am getting the same response...."virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated" error code 0x80070070.

Questions:

1. Why have such an app if it doesn't work anymore?

2. What is the point of updating the cd if it can't be detected by the app?

3. Why have they changed the app so it has to have updated definitions in order to use it?

I can't be sure how long this has been the case...several months at least...haven't had the time to investigate the problem...

Is this just another ploy to stop us fixing older versions of Windows....?

Am I being paranoid....?

Has anyone the solution for this problem?

P.S. Obviously the 0x80070070 refers to lack of space to update....this is a 4.7 DVD-RW which I have always used without problems until the last few months...

... 4 (four) years ago and never actually posted any meaningful info on that one (nor in this one for that matter).

Do you really believe that the few people with ESP are coincidentally also experts on Windows Defender Offline AND they are members of MSFN AND they are willing to assist you?

Start with the standard litany, describe EXACTLY what you did to have the thingy working on DVD at the time, how EXACTLY you attempt to update, etc., etc.

Generally speaking *any* kind of issues with Windows Update are happening lately, someone even believes them being intentional by Microsoft to push people towards the stupid Windows 10, it is entirely possible that your issue is connected to this "generic mess" of WU, with "update engines" new versions released every two months or so, the mpam-fe.exe (or *whatever*) might have been "left behind".

As a side note (and JFYI) I would rather test first on a USB stick (as opposed to a DVD), like here:

Not sure what I left out?

I only referred to the old thread because people have a tendency to get upset wit different threads on the go...

What more do you need...

I download the 64bit and 32bit versions of Defender Offline and create a dvd which has the latest antivirus software included becuse the program is supposed to download them at time of creation....

Some times when I ran the dvd it would not allow me to update from the actual dvd...so I reinstalled the latest version on the dvd and that worked...now it doesn't what more do you need?

As for trying a USB flash drive...done it, got the T-shirt...even with the latest virus and spyware definitions it comes back with the same error as stated before....I have tested this on several different computers....

Even if I use the app to build the USB with the latest version...when I run it from a computer I need to test....it doesn't work....says it is updating and then the error....

I can't be the only one in this boat?!

On the given thread there is one other user that laments similar problems, so you are not the only one, there are at least two of you, see "black sheep" here ;):

https://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/susan/joke/3.htm

Still there is not any definite solution that I could find a reference to, and even the problem is seemingly not very common (maybe the Defender Offline is not widely used or people are content with older definitions :w00t:), the only reknown issues that could be *somehow* connected are as said revolving around the generic issues with Windows Update (for which BTW there is not really a "logical" solution, only some "white magic" involving updating the Windows Update engine blindly), and this is often only a temporary solution. :(

Again, how EXACTLY are you attempting to update?

Have you tried MANUALLY?

See:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/update-windows-defender-manually-windows-8

Have you tried THIS link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87342&clcid=0x409

that currently resolves to:
http://definitionupdates.microsoft.com/download/DefinitionUpdates/VersionedSignatures/AM/1.223.1384.0/x86/mpam-fe.exe

Or this one:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/DefinitionUpdates/mpam-fe.exe

Have you tried using PowerShell?

P.S.: The above links on MS are the ones for the 32 bit verson, the cooresponding 64  bit ones are:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87341&clcid=0x409

Hi Jaclaz!

OK! I use the normal download links for the app... and then follow the instructions for creating the dvd/usb. Every time you run the app it downloads the latest virus/spyware definitions and builds you a 64bit or 32bit version of the offline software....

I then boot a computer that has problems to run the software....

As I have tried to say...the software doesn't work....It says every time that the virus/spyware definitions are out of date and then I get the error I posted earlier...

As I also said, you can't use the software without updating the virus/spyware definitions ....the search through the computer functions are greyed out and you are forced to try and update...which I do from the app....

The links you provide are for Windows defender in Windows and not the offline tool...

Perhaps you are trying to suggest some other way that I don't understand....

The Windows Defender Offline boot media is just that for booting infected computers and removing viurses/spyware etc...

Sorry, If have suggested otherwise...

Sorry about the pics: This is the same result on any computer I have tested. Even if I create the new updated boot media (which this is) it complains about either a network connection or the error as below. There is no point in using an older version of the media because then it is missing the latest virus/spyware definitions...

Unless some one can say otherwise this app doesn't work any more and that is a shame....

Try reading - possibly attentively - the thread I gave you a link to:

http://reboot.pro/topic/20497-run-windows-defender-offline-from-winpe/

AFAIK the definition file mpam-fe.exe is common between offline and online defender, and to Security Essentials, etc.:
http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-update-microsoft-security-essentials-mse-offline/

Unless of course the good MS guys have changed the format or whatever, but I guess we will never know, unless you try:

1) downloading the latest mpam-fe.exe
2) replace the mpam-fe.exe on your build before creating the bootable media
OR:
3) run the mpam-fe.exe to have updated definitions (hence the suggestion to try on a USB stick)

Will it work?

I don't know.

Sorry:(

I wasn't paying attention....Misty's idea is a good one and will give it a try....

Just a little peeved that we have to go a mile to fix something that has worked before and now doesn't....

I appreciate your time and will se what transpires....

Thanks:lol:

Ok, found some recent info, the above won't work :( the good MS guys seemingly f*ç#ed up the actual program, though hopefully (after some time) they at least acknowledged the issue:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_defender-protect_updating/windows-defender-offline-definitions-out-of-date/1502d0d1-dd89-4cbe-9c66-3566ed759e98

One month to understand that there was an issue, and seemingly almost one month to not yet resolve it.

Most probably it's not their fault, but they have to work on highly efficient Windows 10 machines ... ;)

Sounds about normal for Microsoft....

Though on second thought - probably - if you have an old version, you can actually update manually.

I.e. it seems like the issue is with some recent version of the actual program, so an older version may still work (with updated database).

How can I use it for a boot dvd?

I'm not sure. But if anyone has the knowledge to help you, that one is heinoganda, IMO.
So read carefully that thread, then PM him, unless he chimes in here first.
