Microsoft security essentials and Windows XP

The download link that I posted here still works:
https://msfn.org/board/topic/175514-microsoft-security-essentials-and-windows-xp/?do=findComment&comment=1148188

Here it is again:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/ftpk/2013/11/mseinstall_6ea36a8b108517a4dc692afc30aad122af543239.exe

If I had a German version of Windows XP SP3, or could somehow fool Windows (via registry tweak?) into thinking that I am running a German version of Windows XP, I might be able to find the download link for the German version of MSE.

after latest definitions update (2/1/18)  using mse updater, I get windows error boxes from time to time that says "antimalware service executable  has encountered a problem and needs to close". Then the Green icon turns red and a popup box says it has stopped and gives you a button to restart the service. When you click this button, the icon turns green again. This will continue until I run a new program, then the same sequence occurs.

I tried to reboot and did not help anything. I never got this error before today. This seems to be a typical thing with MS on the first day of a new month, year, etc. Or, maybe just a coincidence.

Any help or suggestions?

Have times with my local proxy the download link for MSE v4.4.0304.0 German extracted from Microsoft Update, here it will be offered to me after the search under software optional.

Download from MS:

Download over web.archive.org:

https://web.archive.org/web/20180130200636/http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/ftpk/2013/11/mseinstall_17f531645ed7e5b4043adecd21bcea2fc21b50f1.exe

@mo832

Have you tried using the MSE Updater to reset the Antivirus Update Engine (RAUE)? Then update the Virus-Definition for MSE (1).

@heinoganda

Thank you for the info.

I have not tried the RAVE function this time, but I did perform this in a previous event. If problem continues I will try it.

Update: since running MSE updater again on Saturday 2/3/2018 and loading fresh definitions, I do not seem to be getting the error box anymore. I am still monitoring to see if problem reappears.

I feel there may have been a bug in the last day's definitions, or else my installation for the defs was corrupted somehow.

QUESTION: was your post for the German version software above intended for me and my issue, or for the general user audience?

As there was a demand for a German version of MSE in this topic, it is just a different language version.

  • 5 months later...

Last few weeks, MsMpEng.exe has been using more and more CPU, to the point where it's really slowing down my VM:

Is anyone else seeing anything like this? I tried RUAE followed by re-downloading the latest definitions, but it didn't make any difference.

@Mathwiz

This problem is with me in the VM with MSE (4.8.204.0) likewise present. Due to the increasing virus definition, which takes its toll on memory and processor performance, MSE inevitably becomes more and more slower. The size of the definition of MSE in the period from May 2016 to today has increased by 30%! Other virus scanner manufacturers are also struggling with this problem. In that sense, it is not a mistake.

In the last few weeks, there have also been many reports of inability to get definition updates for the old antispyware version of Windows Defender on Windows 7 and Vista (e.g. https://www.askwoody.com/2018/born-windows-defender-isnt-getting-updates/), and perhaps on Windows XP as well (some Defender users running XP posted earlier in this thread, so perhaps I'm not completely off topic).

Is not related to the problem described by @Mathwiz. Furthermore, I have published a definition updater for Windows Defender (Windows XP x86), where definition updates are still installed. (Is out of date, as most users use Microsoft Security Essentials and there is no demand / https://msfn.org/board/topic/175514-microsoft-security-essentials-and-windows-xp/?do=findComment&comment=1123808)

I think I could live with it if MsMpEng.exe could somehow be persuaded to run at "Below Normal" priority, so it didn't slow everything else down so much.

As it is, I may need a more lightweight browser, at least.

This site is intermittently refusing my attempts to post with a "403 Forbidden" message. Obviously this one got through....

Anyhow, it's not that simple; MSE created a service (which I can't seem to edit) to run MsMpEng.exe and set it to start automatically. I might could get it to run at "below normal" priority, but I would first need to prevent it from starting at "normal" priority.

More info on this: it seems to be Firefox (I have version 52.9) that really sets MsMpEng.exe off. If I leave it alone, MsMpEng.exe will eventually drop to zero CPU, and then everything seems OK until I do anything in FF, even something as simple as opening a new tab (and before I've even chosen a Web page to browse). At that point MsMpEng.exe's CPU skyrockets.

So, simple (but not really satisfactory) solution is to exclude firefox.exe process? I assume MSE would still scan I anything downloaded....

Maybe a better solution would be to move to one of Roytam's builds....
