I didn't see it mentioned in any of the posts I managed to read last night.

Try going TWO posts above your original. Had you read those two posts, you'd have all the information and software you need, and wouldn't need to ask other people to distill it for you.

Be aware that if you have Automatic Updates turned off that MSE may attempt to re-enable Automatic Updates. I just installed MSE, and right after I did I checked and found that Automatic Updates had been enabled. Thanks to a security program, I was alerted to a potentially suspicious action. Further research led me to suspect that my Automatic Updates configuration may have been tampered with, so I checked and found that Automatic Updates had been re-enabled.

It is normal when automatic updates are (AU) disabled, as soon as MSE is installed they will be activated. This happens partly synonymous with other programs from Microsoft as well.

If you know where to look, the official versions are still available.

I found this using some "magic" software ;) created by one of our members:

2013-11-26          Microsoft Security Essentials - (KB2902907)

Description:
You may not be running an anti-malware solution and this may leave your PC vulnerable to viruses, spyware and other malicious software. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-malware software offered to Windows users who have purchased a Genuine copy of Windows. Microsoft Security Essentials is licensed for use on home PCs and by small businesses with 10 or fewer PCs. You can download alternative languages directly from www.microsoft.com/security_essentials with the “more information” link below.

Here's the download link by itself:

And when the above download link no longer works, the identical file can be downloaded from Filehippo:

Microsoft Security Essentials XP 4.4.304 XP

Microsoft Security Essentials 4.4.304 is currently being officially offered through Microsoft Update (with IE8 http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate)!

If an offline installer is desired, copy the file "MSEInstall.exe" to/on any directory/drive under "%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install". The setup of MSE running at this time can still be canceled.

Hello heinoganda, thanks for your reply. I've got no update officially offered through Microsoft Update. Can you send me your german installer MSEInstall.exe or provide a download link? Thanks and regards

It appears that Windows Update shows the Security Essentials being available, but the links shown in the "details" box are not working. You also will not find those links in the Internet Archive.

I have always recommended that people download the programs using the original source page Internet Archive (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download):

(EDITED) The correct link for the x86 32 bit version is

https://web.archive.org/web/20131121010912/http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/ENUS/x86/MSEInstall.exe

I have also had them archived on my FTP: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/mse/

Clicking on the yellow "Get It Now" will bring you to the next page where you can select a language and Windows version.

The direct link for XP 32 bit is http://mse.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/enus/x86/mseinstall.exe

Unfortunately, only the version 4.10.209.0, this does not work on Windows XP!

@heinoganda

Thanks for catching my link error. I'm updating the links in that reply above (since I can't delete the post):

Version 4.4.304 was digitally signed by Microsoft on October 24, 2013. Thus you'll need to use the archived direct download link from November 28, 2013 (it still links to 4.4.304). Also, the files on my FTP were always the correct 4.4.304, so you can always use those!

(In my post above I accidentally linked to a newer archived link which happens to link to the "unarchived" 4.10.209.0, which as you correctly noted does not run on XP.)

The correct link for the x86 32 bit version is

https://web.archive.org/web/20131121010912/http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/ENUS/x86/MSEInstall.exe
