Ok ... attached are screenshots of steps I took to enable built-in administrator account.

Dell's instructions from your link:

Start / Search cmd / right click and run as administrator.

Note in step 2 that I could not run as administrator.

So in step 2b, I right clicked on the Command Prompt I had pinned to the Start Menu so that I could run as adminstrator.

Then I completed in steps 3 & 4.

After desktop was prepared in Administrator account I went to Control Panel and made sure UAC was turned on, then logged off.

You said, "Now "Cindy" account should be able to "Run As Administrator" and MBRWhiskey should run normally. Also nothing need be "pinned." If not log off and try the same thing in the "Administrator" account.

I logged back into Cindy account and tried to right click MBRWhiskey to run as administrator form Documents folder. As you can see in #5 I did not get the option to "Run as adminstrator" as you were so sure I would. But, #6, I was able to pin to Start Menu, as before, and get the RUN AS command and also the 7-zip menu options.

You said if it didn't work in Cindy account to go into Administrator account and try the same thing. I did that and nothing has changed. I tried to right cick on mbrwhiskey and got neither the RUN AS command or the 7-zip options menu, #7 .... but once again when I pinned mbrwhiskey to the Start menu, then I was able to right click and get RUN AS and 7-zip options, #8.

I must have gone over my quota for attachments because it will only accept two more, so I deleted 5 & 6 from Cindy account and added the 7 & 8 from Administrator account so that you can see I did do it in that account and it still wouldn't work.

My system has some quirks and that developed here and there along the way and this is the reason I decided to go with the clean install, so that I would not carry any of these quirks over into a brand new OS.

Genie Timeline Home 2014 is the version I have. I paid for it for two computers. i thought it sounded pretty good and it came highly recommended my a computer expert.

I thought you wanted me to use ToDo, which I downloaded. You said in the email you sent me with a bunch of instructions:

Email: I'm going to recommend THIS to back up JUST THE FIRST TWO PARTITIONS (aka VOLUMES)-

http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software-features.htm

And now in this last bit you are telling me you want me to use DriveImage. I thought I read at one time that for an actual IMAGE backup the external had to be free of anything else. I've got a lot more than just Genie on my external and they are not things I can delete.

Anyway, please clarify that MBR deal I asked you about, and clarify if you are wanting me to use two different programs to do a backup, or what?

We literally have to back up Partition#1 and Parition#2 as IMAGES!.

Go here, download, and install it.

http://www.runtime.o...veimage-xml.htm

P.S. My Cindy account previously had the Administrators box checked in User Accounts Now it has the Standard box checked. I assume that is because administrator privileges revert now to that administrator account??? Should I go into the Adminsrator account and from there change the Cindy account to Administrator?

I read this (below) and I do not get Local Users and Groups when I go to Computer Management Console.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001093.htm

  1. Click the + next to Local Users and Groups or double-click it. Note: If you cannot access this section, you do not have administrator rights to the computer.

Thx, again Trip, for stating the obvious. Indeed, lack of information for the OP is the most frustrating part.

I'll edit this post soon. DO NOT REPLY AT THIS TIME. PLEASE!!!

As for your "email", I did not send that. It's part of the MSFN Notifications. Indeed, I went back and scrubbed it and TOTALLY rewrote it. As I had said in your Laptop Recovery Topic from some time ago, you're obviously not technically inclined. That means, stop questioning the "Experts".

Now, I will say AGAIN (wow!) STOP SEARCING THE INTERNET FOR OTHER INFO! Stay here or go elsewhere.

I read this (below) and I do not get Local Users and Groups when I go to Computer Management Console.

http://www.computerh...es/ch001093.htm

You did it again! Nowhere in this Topic gives that link! If you insist on going elsewhere, we're done here and you can go there instead (too many cooks and all that).  If you're willing to STOP IT then I'll proceed to give you step-by-step.

Again, your choice. Take it or leave it. :angry:

Lesson time (again)
=== Post#90,Paragraph#1
Lesson#1 - MSFN Notifications provide a "copy" of the initial post and not the edited version. NEVER use the eMail text. Go back to the Edited Post.
=== Post#90, Paragraph#2
Lesson#2 - AGAIN (I repeat myself) MBR.BIN is Uncompressed and MBR.z7 is Compressed. Go search for that on the WWW if you must. I'm getting tired of telling you the difference.
As for MBRWhiskey and MBRWiz...
MBRWhiskey is the Main Graphic Interface Program.
MBRWiz is a Command Line Program and is CALLED by MBRWiskey.
They're a Set.
-Does Genie have ONE file or MANY? "What are the other files for?" is DUMB to ask!
STOP QUESTIONING THINGS! I wouldn't have given you SUPERFLUOUS components.

As for the italized part. See Post#89 Lesson#2. Also GO BACK AND READ THE GOODELLS LINKS (betting you didn't)! (again, I'm repeating myself).
=== Post#90, Paragraph#3
See "=== Post#90,Paragraph#1" above.
=== Post#90, Paragraph#4
THANK you and YES, it APPEARS to be correct but CAN NOT BE! As Tripredacus said, YOU MUST HAVE GOTTEN A TROJAN and it screwed your Registry Settings up UNLESS you did that to YOURSELF using SOME OTHER WEBSITE'S INSTRUCTIONS! (more on that further down)

=== Post#91
DELL'S? Did I NOT give this link?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/555910
Please stop confusing who's doing what to whom.

As you have a REALLY messed up Registry and had to use the PINNED one (you ALREADY determined that, RIGHT?) the net result did... what?

=== Post#92, Paragraph#1
GOOD!
=== Post#92, Paragraph#2 and #3
Lesson Time - "Run As" applies to ANY Executable-type file (EXE. CMD, BAT, etc)

Activating the Built-In Administrator changed something for the "Cindy" account. (more on that further down)
=== Post#92, Paragraph#4
Repeat - you have a REALLY messed up Registry! You had to do "silly" stuff (again) to get "Run As"
=== Post#92, Paragraph#5
Yup!
=== Post#92, Paragraph#6
NO KIDDING???? See "=== Post#90, Paragraph#4" above.

=== Post#93, Paragraph#1 and #2 and #3
You repeated yourself from Post#92.
=== Post#93, Paragraph#4
Your computer expert is an id*ot. You may as well have instlled Norton Goback (google that).

Did I not say a looong time agos to use the Built-In to XP/Vista/Windows7 "File And Transfer Wizard?

Either way, the POINT was to allow for tranferring ALL BUT THE OS AND INSTALLED SOFTWARE to ANOTHER PLACE OFF OF YOU HDD!
=== Post#93, Paragraph#5
See "=== Post#90,Paragraph#1" all the way at the top.
=== Post#93, Paragraph#6, Sentence#1

And now in this last bit you are telling me you want me to use DriveImage.
See "=== Post#90,Paragraph#1" all the way at the top.
=== Post#93, Paragraph#6, Sentence#2
I thought I read at one time that for an actual IMAGE backup the external had to be free of anything else.
WRONG! You don't understand what an IMAGE is. You're going out to the WWW which is RIFE with misinformation. MSFN is one of the most TRUSTED FOR ACCURATE INFO on the face of the PLANET! You're creating a COPY, and NOT an IMAGE. An IMAGE is a self-contained FILE, similar to those 7-Zip files you extracted.
Lesson time (again)...
You can COPY your entire OS to another Partition/Volume by using a WindowsPE Boot CD/DVD. You'll see exactly what you copied. But you will NOT be able to Boot from it!
You can IMAGE your entire OS to another Partition/Volume by using a WindowsPE Boot CD/DVD using (for example ImageX or DriveImageXML). You will NOT see anything but a SINGLE FILE (and maybe a Control File, as in DriveImageXML). You CAN restore it and BOOT from it, as the Partition Size, Partitin Type, and Partition Boot Record are stored IN ADDITION TO the Files Themselves!

Basically, your RECOVERY Partition is BOOTABLE (normally, just like your OS), whereas a COPY of it IS NOT, but a Restored IMAGE IS!!! Get it?

You can RESTORE an IMAGE of your OS and that's EXACTLY what's on your RECOVERY Parition. If you LOOK on your D-Drive you WILL see a FOLDER and inside that you WILL SEE a FILE named "FACTORY.WIM". Guess what form that is? AN IMAGE MADE WITH ImageX!!!
=== Post#93, Paragraph#6, Sentence#3
I've got a lot more than just Genie on my external and they are not things I can delete.
Did I REALLY say delete anything? When you Copy a FILE from Folder#1 to Folder#2 IS ANYTHING IN FOLDER#1 DELETED?

AGAIN, we will be making an IMAGE IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT FOLDER ON YOUR EXTERNAL!
=== Post#93, Paragraph#7, Sentence#1
See "=== Post#90, Paragraph#2" above.
=== Post#93, Paragraph#7, Sentence#2
NO! Looking into Paragon I changed my mind.
YES! Use DriveImageXML
See "=== Post#90,Paragraph#1" above.
=== Post#93, Paragraph#8
See "=== Post#90, Paragraph#4" above.
See my Post#95 - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175077-in-place-upgrade-to-windows-7-home-premium/#entry1118643

To answer-
I assume that is because administrator privileges revert now to that administrator account???
NO! Your Security Registry stuff is REALLY screwed up. It should NOT have changed it UNLESS "something" altered a "Standard User" to make it APPEAR to be an "Administrator".
YOU did something to FIX something using ANOTHER id*ot's recommendations, didn't you? Don't fib!
Should I go into the Adminsrator account and from there change the Cindy account to Administrator?
Worth a shot. :unsure: Howevere, since you Administrator account is also hosed, I don't see how it will help (see previous "Security is hosed").
Also, at this point in time, I am NOT prepared to give a Lesson on anything else.

I WILL suggest one last thing -
1-Using the Administrator Account, CREATE a NEW UserID (call it "Test") as an Administrator (remember the "Groups" lesson?) and DO give it a Password (use "Test") and if need be a Hint (use "test").
2-Log Off and go into "Test" account and try ye-olde Right-click. Report back what it does.

==================================
Final -
Don't you DARE ramble on about ANYTHING else! Period!

ONLY do what I SAID to do. NOTHING ELSE! I do NOT have time to repond to EVERY SINGLE ARGUMENT (which is what you're doing).

My daughter's PC is sitting here - for the past week. Imagine that!
My own NEW PC (i'm posting on my OLD one) is sitting here IN A TESTING STATE FOR YOU instead MY being able to use it!

Are we clear? ;)

(He$$ yes, I'm getting snippy!)

Oh, and I WILL give you COMPLETE instructions on "How To" and I will EXPECT them to be FOLLOWED.
WITHOUT QUESTION!!!!

Don't respond to this post, please.

For another $10 you could have had the additional capability of Cloning (Imaging).

Here's Genie Timeline (I got the Manual and NOWHERE does it do Cloning/Imaging)

http://www.genie9.com/home/genie_timeline_home/buy.aspx

Here's Acronis True Image (I got that manual too).

http://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/computer-backup/

Does everything Genie does PLUS Cloning (Imaging).

Next time, come HERE for advice and assistance.

We do not and do it for free.

thank you for the time you've given me. I've always appreciated that you are giving me your time for free. You  aren't the only one who has a lot of time and effort invested here. But I guess in your eyes YOUR time and effort are the only ones worth anything. Certainly not mine. Your time could have been better spent than trying to trace my tracks all over the Internet forums. I wouldn't be all over if you could settle down, calm down, get over yourself and just simply help me instead of thinking about how many different ways you could find to insult me.

Simple question: What MBR backup are you talking about? In dealing with these MBR files I don't recall anything ever being referred to as a backup, so which file is it that you want me to save? Instead of just answering the question, naming the file, you go off on another long, insulting tirade. It would be my guess that it's the MBR.7z file, but I still don't know.

Your insults and nastiness have reached the point of abuse. You have called me stupid in more ways than I knew it could be said and I'm no computer geek, but I'm not stupid. I thought I could put up with it all so that both of us would not have wasted our time and I could get Windows 7 installed, but I guess I was wrong. I opened up your posts 95-97 and after being into them just a short time, I knew I couldn't do this any longer. You have a mean spirit and for that, I'm sorry for you.

Ok, I'm going to chime in now, and give you the advice I wish someone had given me many, many years ago when I was in the same boat as you.

In general, here it is;

Purchase an Intel SSD, whichever one you like, it doesn't matter. You will own a super-fast drive that you can install 7 to. What this will accomplish is that you will be able to test and learn how to install 7 without any interference from your other drive (that I assume you are running Vista from).  There is of course a process to this, but it doesn't include any of the gibberish that I've been reading in this thread, it's nice and as simple as it can be.

What I'd suggest you do is spend a few days collating information on installing an OS from scratch. YouTube will have some good videos, and also some not-so-good ones.

The one safety factor I will tell you is this; when (and if) you attempt this my (strong) advice to you is to disconnect the (or all) other drives on your machine - unplug the sata cables to the drive(s) after you have shut down Windows. You will also need to learn (if you don't already know) how to change the boot order in the BIOS.

That is my brief but safe advice to you, some of which I posted early in this thread.

Thank you. It was nice to receive some calm, simple information instead of a tirade about all the forums I've asked for help from since clear back in 2005, and threats and insults. Your advice sounds really good. If I had the funds I would just take this to a computer shop and be done with it but I called about that and I really can't afford it. Buying the Windows 7 disk stretched my budget pretty thin and I can't afford to purchase a new hard drive. I'll keep searching for install information and watching YouTube videos and maybe one of these days I will have the courage to put the disk in, send up a prayer and try it. Thank you for the information that I do have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order.  :yes:

Hrmph...(again).

It would be my guess that it's the MBR.7z file

And I said

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175077-in-place-upgrade-to-windows-7-home-premium/#entry1118597

Your MBR is a Standard (not "special") one.

So no, we no longer care.

You just said

Thank you for the information that I do have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order.

And I said

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175077-in-place-upgrade-to-windows-7-home-premium/#entry1117244

DVD as First Boot Device (in BIOS Setup)

I suppose my saying so doesn't count?

Now if you'll settle down from frantic confusion, read my posts, and pay attention, I've provided every scrap of info usable from Novice (you) to Expert (me).

AS SOON AS I get a chance to key up PRECISE instructions I'll attach them soon. It should be a piece of cake. That is, PROVIDING you can run anything (see next sentence).

Oh, and thanks for withholding the fact that you had a Trojan/Virus/Malware. It certainly explains why your accounts aren't working properly.

Thank you. It was nice to receive some calm, simple information instead of a tirade about all the forums I've asked for help from since clear back in 2005, and threats and insults.

=====

@Luxman - did you miss the part about retaining the First Two Dell Partitions? Also

What I'd suggest you do is spend a few days collating information on installing an OS from scratch. YouTube will have some good videos, and also some not-so-good ones.

(sigh...) And what do you think several of MY links were for? Not videos, but actual written instructions with pretty screen shots. Hey, you don't even have to start/stop/rewind to get the gist!

Or do you prefer to take over from here? ;)

=====

Back @sophy - how quick did you think I could open up my PC to put in a spare HDD, create the partitions, and load up Vista to test with? Or do you really care about MY time and effort (free, BTW) on your behalf, leaving my OWN project idle? SELFISH SELFISH SELFISH! Call that an insult if you wish, but truth is truth. Oh, and (reminder) that PC is SUPPOSED to be THIS one's Replacement. It makes me :( that I'm using it for you and not me.

========= Still waiting....

Should I go into the Adminsrator account and from there change the Cindy account to Administrator?

Worth a shot. :unsure: Howevere, since you Administrator account is also hosed, I don't see how it will help (see previous "Security is hosed").

2-Log Off and go into "Test" account and try ye-olde Right-click. Report back what it does.

========== Additional...

Be aware that you should have ONLY been backing up Pictures, Music, Videos, Installation Programs (like Genie - ugh!), etc. IOW, Data that you want to keep.

-but NOT (e.g.)-

NTUSER.DAT inside your User Profile Folder, individual Programs/Modules, DESKTOP.INI's, Shortcuts, etc etc.

I have no clue how you have Genie set up. It appears you can (foolishly) allow it to "mirror" your whole C-Drive and D-Drive. Even do it incrementally (why?). You don't want that. You should be VERY selective, the same way the Built-In "File And Transfer Wizard" works.

THE ABOVE IS CRITICAL! (And I repeat, I have the Genie Manual and comprehend it entirely.)

Be prepared to DISABLE "Genie" for the purpose of Imaging (Cloning) D-Drive and :Hidden" Drive (takes a special trick to make it visible). Make a Folder on that External for the Images.

=========================================================================

As I have said (before), I'll return when I'm ready to give you full instructions. Be aware that I'll do it when I'm ready, not at your (or anyone else') conveneince. I do believe YOU were rather rude floating off to elsewhere because I didn't repond fast enough to suit you. Or am I wrong? :crazy:

I honestly don't know if you should spend any more time on this. The fact that you have the brains and computer know-how I don't question for a moment, but your knowledge doesn't translate very well to teaching, or to dealing with those you feel are less than you.

QUOTE" Oh, and thanks for withholding the fact that you had a Trojan/Virus/Malware. It certainly explains why your accounts aren't working properly.

This is one of the more ridiculous statements you've made. What would I have to gain by purposely lying to you about anything having to do with this computer. I simply didn't remember the Trojan. It doesn't matter who or what caused the problem anyway. If I had told you, "Oh, by the way, I had a Trojan on this once," would that have made one darned bit of difference? It is a fact that there are problems with my system, which I tried to tell you over and over that certain things weren't working right, and even after all the screenshots you STILL insisted I either wasn't doing it right or I was lying to you about something. A reasonable person would have accepted that things weren't working and being the computer guru that you are, figured out a work-around so I could get the task you wanted accomplished done. I never asked you to get my Vista system working right. That's not what this was about.

QUOTE: (sigh...) And what do you think several of MY links were for? Not videos, but actual written instructions with pretty screen shots. Hey, you don't even have to start/stop/rewind to get the gist!

I've been to those links and gone through them more than once and printed some things off. I have ALL links bookmarked in a special file on my browser. All you do is insinuate every way but Sunday how stupid I am, call me a liar and I don't think anything has changed according to your statement in this last post: AS SOON AS I get a chance to key up PRECISE instructions I'll attach them soon. It should be a piece of cake. That is, PROVIDING you can run anything (see next sentence).

I bet there is something in this world that you aren't real good at and how would you like it if you had to depend on someone else's knowledge and they responded to you the way you have done to me .

Back @sophy - how quick did you think I could open up my PC to put in a spare HDD, create the partitions, and load up Vista to test with? It makes me sad :( too. You should never have started this because you didn't have the temperament for what it would take to see it through. I've shown you one heck-of-a-lot more respect and consideration than what I've received. And I've told you right here in this forum more than once that I appreciate the FREE time you are giving me. I told you how nice it was of you when you told me you were going to do this set up on your own computer to test the waters for me. Don't cry about your time when you were using a big chunk of it to trace me all over the Internet forums clear back to 2005, far as I could tell. And what was the purpose of all that? What did it accomplish and what did it prove? Absolutely nothing!

(P.S. - Moderators and Supervsors have access to our PM system and can read our Private Dialog.)

For heaven's sake, I know this, and that I have no reason to feel concerned about it. I don't think you are able to realize how really abusive you were with all your remarks and sighs and faces. I can see how someone with your knowledge could get frustrated dealing with a novice, but you shouldn't be offering to help the novices because you just don't have the temperament for it. Maybe you need to share only with those who are at least closer to your level of understanding and knowledge.

It appears I forgot something. You asked me to test that scenario with the Administrator's account. I did that, if you can trust that I was smart enough to do it right, and it didn't work.

I had to come back here because I forgot to respond to something else. If you send me any instructions, forget about keeping those two Dell partitions. Your instructions are too hard to follow (which is in large part why I did so much Googling) and for something like that I am sure I would have questions and you said it above, Also, at this point in time, I am NOT prepared to give a Lesson on anything else. Seems like quite a contradiction to me ... You (the expert) are going to help me (the novice) but you aren't giving any more lessons.

And, finally, (sigh...) And what do you think several of MY links were for? Not videos, but actual written instructions with pretty screen shots. Hey, you don't even have to start/stop/rewind to get the gist! I have been to your  links, have been through them more than once and have even printed off some. I have EVERY ONE of them saved in a folder on my browser that is labeled Vista to Win 7.

Well, I thought what he said was probably true, but it doesn't matter because I don't have anything to hide about PMs. I don't know why he even said that, but then I don't understand a lot of things about what's gone on here. I sent him a PM early on that was a one-liner commenting that I hoped he was still with me because I hadn't heard from him for a number of days.

Then, after he posted how he hesitated to even post anymore until I could say I "got it" (you can find that in this mess somewhere) I sent another PM asking him some questions and he informed me to stick to the thread, that it was against the rules to copy/paste PMs into threads, and that he refused to assist in PMs. I answered that I was not trying to break any rules but was under the impression he didn't want to post in the forums until he could feel "I get it" and that's why I had used a PM and I was sorry. That was the extent of our PMs.

If I had told you, "Oh, by the way, I had a Trojan on this once," would that have made one darned bit of difference?
Yes, because we wouldn't have wasted so much time on running things once we were aware.

========= Still waiting....

Should I go into the Adminsrator account and from there change the Cindy account to Administrator?

Worth a shot. :unsure: Howevere, since you Administrator account is also hosed, I don't see how it will help .

==========

Sophy (or whatever your name is) will you do this or not? (waiting... waiting... waiting...).

I requested this info (don't answer, you can't be helped) -

1-Did you create a New Folder ("Images") on External F-Drive and Image the D-Drive ("RECOVERY") to it?

1a-If so, then I can give instructions on how to access the "Hidden" one. (simple task)

1b-If not, then we'll just skip Backing Up and go-for-broke. (screw Vista Recover Backups)

After that, it's simply a matter of Following One Of The Links I Gave And Skipping A Step And/Or Slight Modification.

I have been to your  links, have been through them more than once and have even printed off some. I have EVERY ONE of them saved in a folder on my browser that is labeled Vista to Win 7.
Browser? You mean Windows Explorer? On your External or on you C-Drive (that we're going to wipe and reinstall)? THINK ABOUT IT! Printing them is a DARN good idea because once you wipe that C-Drive you NO LONGER HAVE COMPUTER ACCESS TO THEM! Again, use your noodle.

If you won't cooperate, how can anyone assist?

And PLEASE learn how to use QUOTE! You're KILLING me interpeting your posts! There's a BIG BUTTON right below each post you want to quote! At least what I provide is clearly marked and semi-organized.

================ I'm going to go ahead and give this

To Allow Access ("see") Hidden Partition.
Run CMD.EXE (you already know how)
Step#1

diskpartselect disk 0select partition 1set id=06 overrideexitexit
Logoff/Reboot
Step#2 - Go to -
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management
Select "Disk Management".
Click on the line that lists your Three Partitions (lower right).
Right-Click the First On.
"Change Drive Letters And Paths"
"Add Drive Letter" (any available).

To Remove Access (re-hide it) -
-Perform Step#2 above but THIS time (in last step) REMOVE drive letter (whatever one was assigned).
-Perform Step#1 above but THIS time use "DE" instead of "06".

Easy-peasy.

=== NOW are you going to IMAGE those two OR NOT??? (DriveImageXML) ===

If you won't answer, then the Windows7 install instructions can't be given!

(Triple-wow!!!!)

Reminder - DO NOT have "Genie Timeline" mess with EITHER of them in ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM! EVER!
