I just did a clean install of windows 7 home premium on my mom laptop and I can't get the update to work. I try setting the windows update to manual ,then rebooting but it will get in a long scanning process without any result. I did wait more than 0.5 hours. AM I missing something ? alacran Posted September 11, 2015 Share Posted September 11, 2015 That happened to me recently when I restored a Ghost copy (made last year) of Win7 SP-1 Pro last week on same PC, there is no way to get updates, it can run for hours scanning the PC and no update is shown. AM I missing something ?manually update the windows update agent to the latest version.Download it,Save it to your computer,then double click to install.Restart the computer.Try updating again.Be sure automatic updating is turned on both through adminstrative services and control panel/turn automatic updating on or off.It may still take some time to scan.If this does not work for you,try plugging your computer directly into your router/modem.I have seen this issue many times.In fact,i had this same issue on windows 7x64 just recently after restoring my computer back to factory settings.I installed the latest wu and plugged it directly into the modem/router.Took about 20 minutes or so,but it finally worked.You should be able to get the latest update agent here.Just download the appropriate update for you windows version. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/946928 Edited December 14, 2015 by AlphaOmega Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dencorso Posted December 15, 2015 Share Posted December 15, 2015 No. Keep automatic updates service on but turn it off on the control panel.Then download the very latest update agent here.Then install it from a cmd box with the /wuforce switch.Then start a manual custom update, and be sure to hide all telemetry and "Win 10 upgrade" patches before downloading and installing. Windows Update downloaded and installed the above WUA, then just ran and ran and ran and... (you get the idea).Exiting and rebooting and try, try again, but still goes to The Never Ending Story.Well, after I did THIS (see our friend magicandre1981's post) Lo and Behold! Within a few minutes!http://superuser.com/questions/951960/windows-7-sp1-windows-update-stuck-checking-for-updatesPlease NOTE that BEFORE you install the Update, you MUST reboot to STOP WU from running. THEN install said update. Seems that just "exiting" the screen leaves it in perpetual "stuck". So...1 - Fresh Install (AutoUpdate Off)2 - Install WUA v3203 - Install the linked KB4 - Reboot5 - Voila! Thanks, MS for screwing up something else. I just had a question about installing WUA with the /wuforce switch . My question is how do you do it ? lol I just clicked on the .exe and the 'Linked KB' and it worked so wanted to know if there was any advantage in using the switch ? I used to know how to do the switches when it came to installing updates but I don't remember any of it. Thanks.
