Windows 10 - First Impressions

Although Windows 10 bolted out the door very fast, overtaking Linux and Windows Vista in a mere 3 days, it looks like word is getting around about its mediocrity, causing it to lose steam:

As I expected, most of the upgrades are coming at the expense of Windows 8.1.  Previously, Windows 10 was set to pass Windows 8.0 in a week, but it look like it will take longer than that now!  This data is from StatCounter.

This data is from StatCounter.

Can you provide some details on how you got it?

Going to your link http://gs.statcounter.com/#desktop-os-ww-daily-20150701-20150805

I can find not a Windows 10 at all. besides the usual suspects: XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 I can find only OSX, Linux, "unknown" and "Other"

P.S.: EDIT, I need to set the date range within 29th July - 4th August to have Windows 10 "magically" appear in the legend and graph, here is the link:

http://gs.statcounter.com/#desktop-os-ww-daily-20150729-20150805

the different scale somehow highlights a hiccup in 7 stats centered on the 2nd of August and a return to "normal levels" on the 3rd and 4th (it must mean something .... ;)).

Now, on "other news" :w00t::ph34r: interesting "terms of use":
https://hulbee.com/agreement

(that could be well titled "What Google does ...")

and "privacy statement":
https://hulbee.com/privacy

From this newish (Swiss) search engine:
https://hulbee.com/

I particularly like the part between brackets and the "only-if-forced-to" policy, as opposed to the traditional "opt-in" or "opt-out" (which I made BOLD RED to highlight):

Government requests

Yes, download the CSV data file, and graph it in a spreadsheet program.  I used OpenOffice.  This allows me to show more than eight operating systems, and to make the graph larger and specify the graph colors.

The dip you see in Windows 7 is a reoccurring weekly dip on weekends (as you can see in the picture I posted).  My interpretation of this is that more businesses are using Windows 7 and XP, while more home users are using Windows 8x and Vista.

Warms my heart to see Win 7 still pretty stable up there.

What is deterring people?  It's a free upgrade after all...

Oh, that's right, it's not actually better in any noticeable way.  And people aren't as stupid or herdable as Microsoft would like.

Yep, you've made my day with those stats.  I had nightmares of tens of millions of gullible people just throwing the switch because they don't know...

I wonder if I ticked a telemetry counter this week.

I installed (for the nth time) Windows 8.0... and actually activated it. On my laptop.

Why the great gods may ask?  After installing (almost) all the Win10 previews, I lost audio after 9926. Wifi has been broken after sleep or shutdown since 10074 requiring a reboot every time., 10130 then 10240 nothing changed.

Only 8.0 shows no missing drivers in device manager after installation. Attempting even to 'upgrade' to 8.1 undoes the good work.

Although sound somehow works..  Possibly I could fix 8.1, but at this point there is no benefit to bother. Plus it considers itself a clean install and removes all user programs and leaves only documents/files. Great...

EOL for Win8 is still many years away. I'd rather my all hardware is working, than an OS that doesn't care.

Glass8 still looks lovely. I have borders back. It somehow feels faster than 10, Snappier, and glorious sound again. Nice icons.

And a start screen I never open because have Classic Shell.

Bliss.

Good points, ralcool!

When I felt the stirrings of "incurable geek cravings" to upgrade, I looked around for a new Win 8.1-compatible theme and reworked it slightly with some updated caption buttons and border shading, and voila, I'm loving Win 8.1 all the more, with all those things you mentioned are missing in the Win 10 experience.

There's a LOT to be said for just liking the way something works (and conversely, no matter how many marketing people tell you how you should think, the deck's just stacked against you enjoying life if you just dislike the way something works).

Hmmmmmm.

[gentle teasing]

NoelC, that sounds very familiar.  Kind of like what others, including me, have said about their OS, whether it is Win7, Vista, XP, 2K, or earlier, when they were told asked about "upgrading" to a newer MS OS. :)

[/gentle teasing]

We're always glad to hear how others have made the newer OS bow to their wishes and needs, and it might even convince us to upgrade ourselves at some point in the future, but only when we're ready and convinced of the value for us. :)

Cheers and Regards

I'm not aware of having pressured anyone to upgrade (especially not to Win 10), but I'm sorry if I've criticized your (or others') choice in what to run at some time in the past.  I'd like to hope I'm growing wiser (to offset a bit the bio breakdown) as time goes on.

Of course, while my way isn't the only way, it IS the best way.

I prefer the quote "Be reasonable, Do it my way"

Anyway, FYI.. This laptop is Vista era.

After several months I got sick of the pace of Vista threatening to destroy the HDD from thrashing.

I decided to 'downgrade' to XP.. but had a little trouble finding device drivers. I even went so far to go online and ask HP tech support for the **** link to the page I needed with the drivers.

It was then, the rep told me.. Try windows 7... It was in early beta at the time. Interesting advise hey?!

I did manage to scrounge all the drivers to function as XP.. but I was never a fan, and while I succeeded to install it, he picked my interest.

So I did enter the 7 beta program, and used several builds later up until final RTM and SP1.

Sorting out drivers and things is a well worn path for me, and this little machine. I've maximised the RAM, installed the fastest CPU that will fit TDP, and a solid SSD. 8 yrs old, and faster than many of todays offerings.

Probably the worst kind of customer really.

:P

Ooh, a major design award!  Proof!!  How could we have been so foolish???

Oh, wait, we trusted our own experiences over hype from a propaganda machine.  Never mind.

P.S., learned a new term from the comments (though it was misspelled there methinks):

This was in the news today: http://betanews.com/2015/08/05/windows-10-start-menu-wins-major-design-award-microsoft-proves-haters-wrong/.  What are peoples thoughts on this?

Adrian

Several thoughts, in no particular order:

  1. I make my own assessments.
  2. As far as I'm concerned, this award shows the complete and utter lack of either esthetic or practical sense on the part of those who voted for it.
  3. Or maybe they were so relieved that Microsoft finally brought back some semblance of the Start Menu, they felt they needed to reward the company for it.
  4. I am reminded of the art experts who were shown canvasses covered in random scribbles, supposedly painted by some newly discovered genius, and then they oohed and aahed all over it, singing the praises of the artwork... then were informed that the paintings were done by a gorilla.
  5. If this is truly representative of what is taken for design brilliance today, then modern civilization is doomed.

A lot of good responses down in the comments section. To judge from his display of logic in that post, Pasta Fagioli isn't the brightest bulb in the pack.

Well, the good MS guys must have also invented a time machine.

At least at end of june 2015 submissions were closed:
https://web.archive.org/web/20150627183454/http://www.idsa.org/awards/idsa-awards
it is doubtful that the jury can have actually tested the final version.

The award is for the "design" not for the implementation , very likely the jury has seen some mock-ups and maybe some half-@§§ed prototypes, it is a (anyway perverted) appreciation of the looks of it (while obviously the only things that actually counts is functionality of the whole OS, not just of the Start Menu).

Check the other awards:
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/preview

The Digital Design award given to Microsoft has the same dignity and relevance as - say - the Packaging & Graphics one given to Purina for their Brand New Cat Litter:
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/purina-r-pro-planr-renewtm-cat-litter-jug

And even if we remain into the "Digital Design" category, there are several "Top Winners" :w00t:(right now they are Gold and Silver mixed together), besides MS:
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/humax
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/naver-service-history-wall-connect-one
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/post-it®-plus-app
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/sejong-city-glass-wall
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/tomra-cui
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/attractive-concierge
http://www.idsa.org/awards/idea/digital-design/dialogue-dark

On the 22nd of August when the actually awarded the Gold Award will be revealed, we'll see if they are actually convinced that the Start Menu actually deserves it.

Anyway, and with all due respect to the good guys that assign the awards :) the whole thing more than a competition seems a lot like a showcase for industrial products (or prototypes) that are "new" and possibly "weirdly" designed or exploring the borders of - well - *something*, example  :w00t:
