Wipe drive and install Win 10 #10162 from ISO

I have a test computer that had Windows 7 on it. I am using it to get all the Windows 10 downloads, because I do not want to mess up my main computer. Anyway, over 30 Gig of space is taken up so far, and all I have on it is Windows 10, and Office 2016 (Trial). I did the disc cleanups and even removed all prior installations of Windows 10, but there is still over 30 Gig of space used up. I know if I install  10162 from an ISO file, I will get the chance to do a clean install. I even tried that with another release of Windows 10, but I do not believe it removes everything. Anyway, this is my question. Can I completely wipe my hard drive with another program called Wipe Drive Pro, and then install Windows 10 #10162 from a ISO file, or will it look for a valid operating system like Windows 7 or 8.  8.1   Windows 10 should only take about 4 Gig of space, not nearly 30 Gig.  Thanks, Mike

  1. Of course you can wipe,  but do not recommend wipe the drive, however, wipe partition.

Where did you take that Windows 10 uses only 4GB - this is the volume, if you have an ISO file, after installation the volume is much-much higher.

Windows 10 has not yet been released, why these weird meantime versions are needed? You do not do anything (read: cannot do anything) with them.

kaljukass...Thanks for the reply. OK, so if Windows 10 has a Volume of 4 Gig, what would that equal after installation...about.  5 Gig, 10 Gig, 15 Gig ?? Thanks, Mike

Windows 8.2 10  should have - more or less - the same hard disk space requirements as 8.1, i.e. between 16 and 20 Gb for a normal installation (wich BTW is more or less the same amount of space needed for Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP 2, Vista SP3 WIndows 7 ;) and windows 8:

When the final version will be released, the new mechanism that is replacing wimboot:

most probably will allow to make it much smaller (do not expect miracles, possibly a couple of Gb saved):

cannot say if such mechanism is already available in these beta's .

Yes it is available in this betas, I already tried it, you get about 31% reduction in size from standard install (both witout pagefile and hiberfile), I tested it using WinNTSetup v3.80 to deploy the .wim to VHD see: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/149612-winntsetup-v38/page-50#entry1101479

And also take a look to few latter posts, to clarify the use of this compact mode in WinNTSetup v3.80

To deploy Windows from Windows Setup

  • Use an unattend.xml file with the setting: Microsoft-Windows-Setup\ImageInstall\OSImage\Compact

More info in Microsoft page about compact install: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn940129%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Best Regards
