Not a personal folder file

When I try to open Outlook  2007 to get my e-mails, I get this message.  C"/users/Willard/appdata/local/Microsoft/outlook/outlook.pst is not a personal folder file.  Suggestions on how to fix this, please. Can I just reinstall Outllook 2007 (or Microsoft Office 2007) Thanks.

Was the "PST" file always there (created from the beginning) or did it come from elsewhere? Did it *ever* work?

I never got a reply to the IMAP question, as you can see if you look at the postings. The second question was never resolved here. I must have found a way to fix it somewhere, do not remember.

Yes, the emails did work before.  not sure when the PST files came into existence.

Update.  I checked the message I get. It says "CANNOT OPEN YOUR DEFAULT E-MAIL FOLDERS"  This message is right before the C:/Users/Willard, etc.   I looked at your links, but just quickly. I was hoping this NEW / ADDED info. would help.

submix8c,  Thanks for the links, but nothing works.  I can not find either SCANPST.EXE  or  SCANDISK.EXE. anywhere. I even searched for it by typing it in the SEARCH item box etc.   

If I follow the link I posted in post #1, it leads me to the following 7 items Under Outlook ,   Last sharing with 2KB, Extend with 1 KB, Install-top with 1 KB, Outlook Microsoft Office Outlook Folder with  161,466 KB, Outlook sharing a OPI file with 2 KB, and Outlook.xml.kfl  a KFL file with 1 KB.

I can easily try these two ideas. Upgrade to Office 2010. or save that Outlook file with the 161,466 Kb to a flash drive, then delete Mocrosoft Office 2007, and then reinstall it. And then copy that Outlook folder back. Would you suggest any of these ideas ??  Thanks Mike

Scanpst.exe is in the same folder as your Outlook.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\

or something like that.

But if there is no pst in that folder, there is nothing to scan. You need to configure Outlook for whatever messaging folder it should use (or was using before someone changed something).

Thanks for the reply Ponch, but there was no folder like scanpst.exe anywhere on the computer. I was also having other issues with the computer especially Internet Explorer, so I reimaged Windows 8.1 Everything seems to work great now, but I need to get his name and password for his email, and then I can set that up also. Thanks again.

1) Not your PC

2) OS is Win8.1 (appears that both x64 and x86 exist?)

3) Never mentioned SCANDISK (Win9x). CHKDSK for an NT system.

4) SCANPST.EXE is a program, not a Folder.

*IF* your OS is x86 then the folder name would correspond to the above.

My Office 2007 has that file.

There are a number of Folders on the Office 2007 install:

Office.en-us, Office64.en-us, etc.

One will have (something).WW and will indicate what type it is, e.g.:

Enterprise.WW, ProPlus.WW, etc.

Inside the above Folder will be a CAB file similar in name to the Folder Name. Inside that is the file in question, under a different name but *still* begins with "SCANPST" in the name. There is *also* inside it a "SCANOST.EXE" (for the xxx.OST files).

 

Why you *don't* (didn't) have that file is a complete mystery.
