Windows Me updates

I'm having a bit of a dilemma when it comes to installing Windows Me updates. Basically, I have a couple of older laptops with Me CoAs, so I thought I'd install Me on them. However, Windows Update does not seem to work (even after installing IE 6.0 SP1), the Microsoft directory of updates doesn't appear to exist any more, and a lot of the unofficial Service Pack/update pack type things all seem to be hosted on websites that either no longer exist, or no longer hold the file. Anyone have any ideas? I'm looking more for the official updates than anything else right now.

This has been hashed and rehashed repeatedly. The v4 Update site has been long-gone. It doesn't exist - period! MS basically wiped it out. Absolutely -no- Win9x updates are avalaible by it anymore. You have one of two choices -

1 - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/95815-important-stickified-pinned-959898-seme-topics/

2 - Search search search the WWW...

BTW, duplicate post...

I know the v4 website doesn't exist, but IE redirects me to the v6 one, which won't install Me updates, and I'm afraid your post is not otherwise helpful. I *did* search that thread, and I have searched the web, otherwise I wouldn't have found this forum in the first place! I can still get hold of the Windows 98 unofficial service pack, and indeed have done so in the past, but that's not helpful here, and I haven't found any way of actually putting in the official Me updates that still works and exists.

V6 doesn't work either. Repeat - MS has totally abandoned Win9x/ME and has (again) -wiped- the Fixes.

The best yo'll get is a list that -may- contain a filename that you -could- use in a search that -may- xist on -someone's- server.

MDGX website apparently down. Many files no longer exist there either. Here is another potential listing for those fixes filenames.

http://erpman1.tripod.com/w9xmeupd.html

AGAIN, there -is- an Unofficial WindowsME Pack (guess you missed that?).

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61407-service-pack-for-windows-me/

And AGAIN, the MDGX website -appears- to be down ATM.

This is the filename (and I have it) -

MESP202B8.EXE (21,935,104 bytes)

It -seems- that WinME didn't get patched as much as older Win9x.

Basically, due to LAWS, they weren't "unofficially" retaining "official" updates. This Forum is based in the USofA. Please understand that and check the Rules (click the "MSFN Etiquette" link at the top). I gave you the two options and I give you a third one.

This (fourth) one may or may not be useful. http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/patching/winme/

The -best- you get is a Filename and -hope- you can find it tucked away somewhere. Please don't get huffy. We can only help so much as to what -may-still be available. :( You're waaaay too late in the game. Heck, it's even difficult to find pre-WinME fixes, or for that matter MS is intentionally scrubbing Win2k/WinXP Updates.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/30/AR2006063001587.html

The Updates website has been -gone- since around end of 2009.

@All - Anyone want to get this Unofficial ME SP (beta) from me and upload it somewhere? I have no (e,g,) SkyDrive (etc) account and refuse to create one.

edit - and it appears that All Roads Lead To MSFN (when searching).

edit2 - I -did- find this -but- use at your own risk.

www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/downloadmesp.php

It appears to be the last available WinME Unofficial Update (includes all kinds of extras etc). Described as "Updated Feb 15, 2014, UWMESP3.EXE Beta 5".

I'm getting quite aggrieved at you digging at me now. I did NOT miss the Me service pack, in fact, I've mentioned it, and the link does not work in that thread - it even says that the English version hasn't been uploaded, and that is indeed the case! I'm downloading the last unofficial update from your final link now.

EDIT: And that file doesn't appear to contain the official Microsoft updates.

It syas "Unofficial Service Pack", now doesn't it? No, it does -not- contain the individual updates -and- contains "extras" and "unofficial". I thought I made that clear when I said use at own risk? AGAIN, you  have the lists of Official filenames. WWW-search until you find them -or- beg PROBLEMCHYLD into providing them (his Service Pack) - he's a member here as well as "elsewhere".

If you'd have looked close, the "erpman1" link also gives DIRECT LINKS to many ffiles that (amazingly) still exist on the Microsoft website (yes, they are the OFFICIAL ones).

HERE is another source!

http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/security/vendor/microsoft/winME/Security_Bulletins/

Note that the list is incomplete!

Sir, I can do nothing more than provide you with what is available. You're just out of luck if you don't look at what has been provided.

This I will -not- vouch for!

http://windizupdate.com/

Period! And I -do not know- if the site even -has- everything on it!

Therefore, sir, you may be "aggrieved" as you wish. We at MSFN try to help. If you don't like the help (free and spending our own precious time for YOU) then go elsewhere. Again, we are NOT ALLOWED to post what may be considered "warez" or risk being banned or the site shut down. This is a US-based website, so maybe things are different in the UK.

Read this and be aware that I'm a Patron (look that up).

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=forums&module=extras&section=boardrules

HTH...

P.S. try googling this

"windows millenium" kb site:microsoft.com

I shall not repeat what I've already said.

The point of the unofficial service packs for both Me and 98 was that they contained all of the official updates, AND the extras. I know this from experience with the Windows 98 one by the same guy! And the fact they have the same installer! Windizupdate doesn't seem to work - I've already tried it. Again, proof that your "you simply aren't looking" comment is bogus.

Your arrogant high-horse approach to a newcomer is rather incredible, particularly since you are swanning about your higher "status"... at no point was I asking anyone to upload Warez, and going ad hominem about that in a threat is, frankly, ridiculous. If you ARE a patron, that means you're supposed to represent the board properly, not like an arrogant toe-rag who looks down on anyone who happens to ask a valid question. Now kindly go away so that someone who is actually helpful can provide me with something.

Your best hope is to wait for MDGx's website to come back up; it has been up and down intermittently as of late. It contains the largest assortment of Windows 9x updates still available. If you cannot find them there, you may try searching for the MSKB article numbers through his HotFix Request Form... but in either case you still need MDGx.com... :}

You really got to download and store ALL updates that Microsoft produces for that very reason.  There's never a guarantee Microsoft will make it easy for you to run their older OSes since they want you hemmoraging cash as repeatedly as possible.  That said, there really weren't very many Windows ME patches.  Here's the official list:

I downloaded the Windows Update Catalog for ME years ago. I got 53 Files.

This does not include the IE6 SP1 package for ME.

Not all of them appear to be useable or needed.

Also, remember that the Wayback Machine may have cached a lot of contents:

https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.mdgx.com/

even if a file is not cached, it is sometimes possible to find it googling for it's filename.

The ME SP1 Beta 9 should be the latest one on Mdgx site and it appears to be named:

https://web.archive.org/web/20140729154329/http://www.mdgx.com/

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/46581-98-fe-98-se-me-updates-patches-hotfixes/

MESP1.EXE and might (or might not) be found elsewhere on the Internet (or some member that downloaded it in the past may be able to find an archived copy and provide it).

Hopefully Mdgx's site will be back soon :).

THANK you one and all for providing lists.

Might I suggest the editing of several of the original posts and include this "complete" (as far as anyone knows) list of OFFICIAL updates so that the next person coming to MSFN won't get "surprised" by the answers they get? Not having used Windows ME for more than a year (right after it came out), I *never* bothered with it anymore. I had moved "backward" to Win98SE, then "forward" to WinXP.

As I said, I *do* have the WinMESP1 Beta-EIGHT (in case I ever needed it). And as stated, the link I gave to the "latest" one was discontinued on MSFN due to (you know). Arguing over/insisting on (basically) "please find for me OFFICIAL Files" is absolute nonsense under the circumstances.

If someone *insists" on having the Originals, I had *also* given a member name to contact as *obviously* that person would have *all* of the originals, else they would *never* have been able to construct the *latest* Unofficial Service Pack 1, amirite?

As it is, I *also* have the *complete original latest* IE6SP1, sans updates (except for the Win98SE, and unsure if they *also* apply to WinME), for *all* OS. As stated, I *skipped* past WinME. I guess I could check...

In conclusion, *if* someone would be willing to put all of their *collection* to a website that would *not* get in trouble due to the legalities involved, I would happily contribute waht little I have to the project. But, seriously, is it worth it? Maybe, to circumvent such Topics repeatedly (occasionally?) being started just so a new user can be PO'd because they don't get the answers they want (kind of like a cop grilling you). Indeed, I would welcome having the *official* ones as well in my personal archive.

That being said, I *might* take time to search down said *official* files myself, even though I *personally* may never have the need for them as all of the old PC's I have are nearly all recycled and those friends/relatives I help out have nothing less than WinXP (also now, AS STATED, getting hard to finde *some* updates).

If *anyone* wants to argue/get angry over this - TAKE IT UP WITH MICROSOFT, not MSFN members that try to help (again, for FREE). As nuhi had (basically) said we have personal lives, we do NOT live and breathe to support everyone on earth and *do* have other things to do.

Again, any takers on having *somewhere* LEGAL to collect/archive them? Being US-based, we (and I) can *not* do this. I really don't want a cease-and-desist or the FBI knocking at my door. ;)

Addendum - Yes, I have many/most Win9x/ME (*and* XP, mostly OEM) variations (i.e. RTL/UPG/OEM) archived/sucked-from older PC's HDD's, so there's that. Software/OS I have is *strictly* to repair, as needed *just* for personal associates.

But then, I repeat myself... ( Wow. Just.... WOW! )

edit - Having some actual FILENAMES, here is another listing (only) -

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/ms-upd.htm

These provide for FTP Searches, neither of which guarantee the site having them are up/still-exist -

Ignoring the self-righteous rubbish right above me from someone who doesn't seem to have the slightest clue what they're talking about (I thought I told you to go away since you have no interest in helping, only in sounding off), I did find a Russian site that had a Warez Millennium iso that contained the beta 9 files, so I downloaded it, extracted the file I needed (obviously after scanning for viruses), and then promptly deleted the rest of the iso, which I have no need for (obviously).

I see while he is actually being a pain in the a** pointing out what should be obvious to nearly anyone he is still posting links to actual hotfixes and so-on, therefore he really is helping, you simply cannot get off of your self-righteous pedestal long enough to see that though.
