jaclaz
That goes a bit beyond "bolt stuff on" I think. Yep , but even in "simpler" setups, like (examples):http://avaxnews.net/wow/Unusual_Monster_Truck.htmlhttp://www.trombinoscar.com/monstergarage/corvette1973.html the idea is so crazy that it can even lead to "success", as proved by the existence of radio controlled models:http://www.amazon.com/HI-RIDER-CORVETTE-electric-monster-instruction/dp/B0013KWUG8?tag=rcs08d-20&linkCode=w13&linkID=VCMBMKMUZNTJZTYY&ref_=assoc_res_sw_result_1 The difference between "crazy" and "stupid" is IMHO relevant . jaclaz
NoelC
Then, by implication, are you saying that Microsoft trying to turn Windows into a tablet operating system that also runs on those old, clunky desktops we Neanderthals won't let go of is something er, crazy, enough to succeed? I noticed that those conversions you have pointed out were actually well built. Wow, perhaps THAT'S what's required here! I wonder if anyone at Microsoft has made this connection. I think we may be onto something here! -Noel
jaclaz
Then, by implication, are you saying that Microsoft trying to turn Windows into a tablet operating system that also runs on those old, clunky desktops we Neanderthals won't let go of is something er, crazy, enough to succeed? Quite the opposite, the idea of making a Corvette into a monster truck is crazy, but it is so crazy that somehow apparently had some success (and of course a car - or monster truck - to work needs to be "well built". What the good MS guys managed to make (and seemingly insist on) is not a "crazy" or "crazy enough" idea to have any success, it is IMHO plainly "stupid" and evidently failed, the fact that additionally it has quite a few issues it means that besides being "stupid" in theory, see also here:http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158104-service-pack-2-for-w7/starting around here:http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158104-service-pack-2-for-w7/?p=1015633 it is also badly implemented, and thus "stupid" in practice. jaclaz
NoelC
Again we are in agreement. By the way, speaking of badly implemented, and in taking us back to the theme of this thread... I just ran afoul of the issue with the IE security roll-up from the August update that needs the "Modal Dialog Performance Fix". :angrym: I guess I'll try layering a hastily-prepared patch on top of the poorly-prepared patch and hope for the best. Sigh. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2991509 This, ladies and gentlemen, is known not so affectionately as "crashing and burning". We may be seeing, unfolding before our very eyes, the end of a computing era. -Noel
MagicAndre1981
btw, the issues with the August Updates was likely caused by Adobe Photoshop Elements which installs Adobe Open Type-Fonts.
NoelC
I see another update has just become available... KB2993651, aka MS14-045: Security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 27, 2014 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2993651 I note the Known Issues section again contains a warning about font issues. I put it in a VM and it didn't crash and burn. But maybe I'll leave it a few days before updating my host workstation. -Noel
