Stefan43
Hello, I have an old computer (Pentium 4) where I am going to install Windows 98SE on. What can I do the best after the installation? What unofficial Service Packs do I need to install? And what browser can I use the best? And is this the topic to download all Windows 98SE updates officially released by Microsoft? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/84886-the-complete-list-of-hotfixes-updates-for-windows-98se/ I hope someone can help me. Thanks.
submix8c
See the "Stickied Topics" Sticky.http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/95815-important-stickified-pinned-959898-seme-topics/Choose your poison. BTW, (most of) those links to MS are (more than likely) dead as a doornail. HTH
Stefan43
There are more Service Packs for Windows 98 SE, but I don't know which ones I need to install on my Windows 98SE installation (Dutch). And I don't know if the Service Packs even will work on a Dutch installation of Windows 98SE. And what is the best way to get the all the official Windows 98SE updates released by Microsoft? dencorso
No. Anything not specifically designed for Dutch will not work right and it'll hose your installation. There's no easy way to get all the official Windows 98SE updates released by Microsoft anymore. Win 9x/ME Support ended on July 11, 2006... there's still plenty that can be done for English... But most of the hotfixes and/or updates for most other localizations are not available anymore.

dencorso
Opera 10.10 & ClamWin, in my opinion.
ZortMcGort11
K-Meleon 1.5.4, SeaMonkey 1.1.19, and Firefox 2.0.0.20 are good browsers. Even better with "noscript" plugin.
Stefan43
Ok, thanks for all the answers. Does Opera 10.10, K-Meleon 1.5.4, SeaMonkey 1.1.19 and Firefox 2.0.0.20 display pages good?
sdfox7
I posted on this subject a couple years ago in another forum.Basically, you can access the Windows 98 updates by utilizing the Wayback Machine.http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-95/windows-95-98-98se-me-updates-available-via-wayback-machine/170975.htmlIf any of the links are broken, as I have explained, you can easily click on each link, then use "view source" in your browser to find the ".exe" for each file. There is also a website that contains a "Win98Update2006.exe" patch with all the official Microsoft security updates for 98SE from 1999 through end of support in 2006. It does require 98SE and Internet Explorer 6. I have tested it and it works flawlessly with one reboot.ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/info/Archived/Procedures2006.html#Microsoft_Update

submix8c
So sorry, those aren't all-inclusive via Wayback as the individual Updates beyond those were only accessible via Windows Update, now completely defunct and inaccessible. The given Wayback "link" only gives "corporate" (if at all). I have the whole pile before it went "down" in English only. You're only alternative is to search, search, search and hope you get lucky. HTH Ok, there are some updates for Internet Explorer on Windows ME available from the Microsoft Download Center, but I don't think that those updates are all the updates that have been released for Windows ME. Thanks for all the help. Edited August 9, 2014 by Stefan43
sdfox7
You can use the Windows Millennium Edition Patches & Updates Guide - HPC Factorhttp://www.hpcfactor.com/support/patching/winme/If any of those links are broken you can take the archived version from 2006:http://web.archive.org/web/20060314040525/http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/patching/winme/That archive page contains Microsoft links which are also archived, so you should not run into any problems downloading the archived files. Walt43
I have the same issue as what started this topic, ie; (msfn.org/board/topic/172439-what-to-do-after-installing-windows-98se/). However, my snag has not been addressed. After Win98SE setup, ver 4.10.2222A, The Terrible task of Updates! Wanting IE6.0, 2 of 3 diff sources give the same, 5 each, CRC errors. Also, IE6.0 touted by the link on this page is only a few hundred KB, which means it is a "Install by Web Connect", which I do not have web on my 98se. Wanting WMP 9.0, I find no workable D/L site to get it. Wanting DX9, Thte D/L I got from MDGX gives page faults. Trying to get Autopatcher 2007 gives "File 403", No Permission. Also, the Mammoth Site MDGX has many links that do not work and the logical trail I find at that site results in going around and around. Where can I successfuly get the proper updates and in proper order???? Please? http://web.archive.org/web/20060706060602/http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx
