Hello, i beeing using Imgex tool from WinPE 2.0 (The Windows® Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows® 7 ), and i have made number of backups for Winxp and Win7 thoroughly past months.
It suffice's my need for making a backup and restoration.
What i want to know is, can i make this Imagex tool bootable from DOS, i know their is a process for creating a bootable WINPE2.0 but it still takes considerable time in my Dual core E5700 process, @3.00GhZ and 2 GB ram.

Is their a tool or a process to make Imagex bootable from pendrive that would be fast to load.

Awaiting some reply.

No.

Imagex is a command line BUT NOT DOS program.

It needs to be run (besides a "full" Windows NT 6 or later)  in a PE 2.x or later.

The Waik for Windows 7 will produce a PE 3.x, the PE 2.x is Vista based.

You can make a "basic" PE quickly by using the QuickPE project:

http://reboot.pro/files/file/340-quickpe/

For the record ImageX was never considered a suitable tool for the backup of Vista or later (though it will normally work fine for XP) because of some issues with hardlinks/softlinks and it is now superseded by the DISM command anyway.

If you want an alternate way you can have a mini-distro of Linux with Sinchronicity's Wimlib tools (besided using it's Windows version in a PE):

http://sourceforge.net/projects/wimlib/

Thank you for replying to my post, wimlib will do it, its imagex is quite similar to WinPE 3.0's Imagex.

All i want to know is, do i have to put all the files downloaded from http://sourceforge.net ( wimlib-1.7.0-windows-i686-bin.zip), to a pendrive.

{wimlib-imagex is largely just a command-line front-end for wimlib as mentioned in the notes}

Will that do the trick, just need confirmation, and i am going to check and perform a restore by wimlib.

Thank you.

What i meant was, can i run this tool from dos, booting it from a pendrive. ?

I just tried booting it from pendrive, but it doesn't run.

No.

ImageX ONLY runs under a WIndows NT based system (either "installed" or PE), as well DISM.

The Windows NT version of wimlib (and companying tools/scripts) will ONLY run under a WIndows NT based system (either "installed" or PE).

The Linux version of wimlib (and companying tools/scripts) will ONLY run under a Linux OS based system (either "installed" or "live").

Jaclaz meant "no and yes" as it can't run "from dos" but it can surely be booted from a pen drive and that would about halve your boot time. The pendrive just needs to be prepared the good way (and there are different methods and they all are very simple).

How long is that ? For instance, I have an old Sempron@1.6 that boots WinPE 3 in less than a minute. Also an i5@2.5 that does exactly the same. From USB of course.
