POSReady 2009 updates ported to Windows XP SP3 ENU

Recommended Posts

I'm not disputing that .NET 2.0 SP2 is now part of .NET 3.5's installation, indeed it may now not be possible to get .NET 2.0 SP2 as a standalone installation, but the installation file for KB4020517 clearly says even in its file name that it's for .NET 2.0 SP2, and nothing to do with .NET 3.5.

So, it's the redirect on http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com that is malfunctioning, much as the redirect on the further help file links on the Windows Event Viewer entries is also malfunctioning.

Microsoft really don't know what they're doing in these areas nowadays do they!

Hopefully it will be fixed, but I'm not holding my breath!

You would be surprised at what is in the .NET Framework Updates (SFX archive)!

netxp372i8anmljh.jpg

Regarding WU and MU in the IE, that will not change, especially since I have been watching for a long time. It started with the change from Windows Update to Microsoft Update no longer worked (only with the Weblink possible). :realmad:

Well the link on IE8's Tools menu has always worked until very recently, redirecting to Microsoft Update for me, and why they would stop it working if the facility is still available is a bit of a mystery as far as I'm concerned.
I suspect it's just an accidental breakage of the redirection, and I hope they will fix it.
A shame that the link isn't openly in the registry to be changed, as the address of the help links on the Windows Event Viewer entries is.
:)

Just now tried my usual path to updates, and got a msg telling me to ge the the latest version of IE.

Yesterday it was all ok.

ETA

Just tried again, get to a download link but can't get the file KB976749 that seems to be the one needed. Anyone have a copy, English version?

@Roffen

Currently, it seems that the redirection was consciously changed by MS for WU/MU under IE. Whether this changes again is in the stars!
As an alternative, I can offer you the following web links for IE:

for Windows Update	http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate
for Microsoft Update	http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

This has already been pointed out in previous comments. KB976749 is an ancient patch for IE8 which has no relevance any more!

@glnz

Whether the two updates for .NET Framework are distributed via automatic updates, as well as WU/MU under IE, will show today (will in any case inform).

Currently, the two updates for the .NET Framework are not delivered via automatic updates, as well as not with WU/MU under IE.

On my XP setup, the Windows Update in the IE8 toolbar is merely an Internet shortcut in the "C:\Documents and Settings\XPMUser\Favorites\Links\Microsoft" directory.

Open that directory and you should be able to right-click it, click "Properties," and change the URL. The default is http://windows.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=windowsupdate&clcid=&pver=&ar=WindowsUpdate

... which, when I click it, gives me a Windows 10 page :puke: But just change it to the appropriate link above and it should start working again.

That's just a normal favourite surely?

The item I was talking about is the "Windows Update" item in the drop-down when you select "Tools" on IE8's toolbar.

As far as I know, that cannot be changed to point anywhere else.

I wasn't even aware of that one! When I tried it, it told me "you need to update your browser" just like the shortcut in the Start menu. The URL is probably stored in the registry somewhere but I don't even know what to search for.

Microsoft seeded XP/IE8 with so many "Windows Update" shortcuts it's hard to keep track! There's also one in the start menu (that now says "you need to update your browser") and one in the Favorites bar, under "Microsoft," that goes to the Windows 10 page. The one in the Start menu can't be changed but it can be deleted. I deleted the start menu one and changed the one in Favorites / Microsoft.

There's also "Microsoft Update" in the start menu; that's what I normally use. It still works so I kept it.

The link under the Tools menu is redirecting to a Microsoft Support FAQ page, and MS Support pages now don't work at all in IE8.

Unfortunately its URL is not in the registry either, it seems to be hard coded into a DLL somewhere so cannot be made to work.

Of course if it's in one of the IE8 DLLs that are updated most months on Patch Tuesday in the cumulative updates for IE8, perhaps it will be fixed very soon!

My yellow shield shows 12 out of Bersaglio's 13.  My shield is missing kb4020535.  (Thanks, Bersaglio!  Any relation to Marconi?)

As a great leader from behind, I ask:  How are these on your machines?

For me, everything works fine after installing.

By the way, KB4020535 is a recommended update (msado15.dll) so it can be installed manually or via Windows Update.

I myself am not connected with Marconi but in the past... there were some indirect contacts. ;-)

Thank you for the direct links to these updates.   I fought with my machine and it never wanted to go to the update site to grab these.  I appreciate you posting these.......

Well, I keep getting stuck in the dreaded "svchost.exe at 99% CPU." Even tried downloading and installing the cumulative IE8 fixes manually. They installed OK but it didn't help.

Guess I'll just have to let it run overnight again
