https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3078662  lists both NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86 updates:

Version 9.0.30729.4087 (75A0782CEE3AC5EC0F81CB7427585F09B9593029)

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/secu/2015/07/NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86_75A0782CEE3AC5EC0F81CB7427585F09B9593029.exe

Version 9.0.30729.4089 (DF948B25BC71432E5CADE81A55E0840A833B8BDC)

So what is the difference and why are both listed?

They are certainly different versions.

Version 9.0.30729.4087 is signed on 20th July 2015, and version 9.0.30729.4089 is signed on 29th July 2015.

Why they produced a second version so soon after the first, and didn't remove the first, is a bit of a mystery!

Anyone who has v. 4087 installed and tries to install v. 4089, the new installer will refuse. So, probably, it's just a revised installer, AFAICS, because if any higher version were present inside, it would install it, instead of saying it has nothing to do because the update is already present. I may be wrong at this, but I think that's what happened.

Yes, I had the earlier version installed, and tried to install the later version, and while it didn't say that the update was already installed, it said that the install was done almost immediately.

It did run the .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86 service, but it only ran for about 12 minutes before stopping again, which is much quicker than normal!

I suspect that it didn't actually do anything, but if I find different when I next run my system file version checker, I'll let you know!

NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86 Update v9.0.30729.4089 do actually contain newer files compared to v9.0.30729.4087. But You should uninstall v9.0.30729.4087 before installing later one.

Namely, you should run

NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86_75A0782CEE3AC5EC0F81CB7427585F09B9593029.exe  /uninstall

Then wait for the completion of the process mscorsvw.exe and finally install

NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86_DF948B25BC71432E5CADE81A55E0840A833B8BDC.exe

OK, but strange that just installing the later version does not appear to do that anyway.

Presumably the differences between the file versions are only very minor.

I'll run my file version checker and see if anything was actually changed.

@Dave-H

Found at least three differences in my system between v9.0.30729.4087 and v9.0.30729.4089 revisions of NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86 update:

9.0.30729.4087

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\WPF\PenIMC.dll version 3.0.6920.4087 released July 19 (20), 2015.

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\WPF\PresentationHostDLL.dll version 3.0.6920.4087 released July 19 (20), 2015.

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\WPF\wpfgfx_v0300.dll version 3.0.6920.4087 released July 19 (20), 2015.

9.0.30729.4089

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\WPF\PenIMC.dll version 3.0.6920.4089 released July 28 (29), 2015.

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\WPF\PresentationHostDLL.dll version 3.0.6920.4089 released July 28 (29), 2015.

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\WPF\wpfgfx_v0300.dll version 3.0.6920.4089 released July 28 (29), 2015.

Hope this helps.

The version checker showed that no files were changed by installing the newer version over the older version, but after uninstalling the older version and then installing the newer version quite a number of files were changed, from 3.0.6920.4087 to 3.0.6920.4089, as you say.

Just a friendly reminder:

Most of us navigate the web with other browsers than IE8, and use IE8 solely for WU/MU and sometimes the MS Update Catalog, and that's about it. So, there's no real reason to let SSL 3.0 remain active on IE8. Check the SSL 3.0 status by accessing this test site with IE8. In case SSL 3.0 remains active, here's how to deactivate it: MS Security Advisory 3009008. Please bear in mind that there's just TLS 1.0 on IE8, because it does not support TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2, or, at least, not on XP. More info on SSL/TLS here.

Just  a crazy question with how this works with XP ... without the newer updates?

I am not applying the POS updates at this time. I got this from the MS link you posted.

With the October 13, 2015 revision of this advisory, Microsoft is announcing the availability of an update for all supported releases of Windows that modifies the Code Integrity component in Windows to extend trust removal for the certificates to also preclude kernel-mode code signing.

then ...

WindowsXP-KB3080446-x86-XXX.exe       10/12/2015

WindowsXP-KB3093983-x86-XXX.exe       10/12/2015   (cumulativ)

IE7-WindowsXP-KB3093983-x86-XXX.exe   10/12/2015   (cumulativ)

IE8-WindowsXP-KB3093983-x86-XXX.exe   10/12/2015   (cumulativ)

WindowsXP-KB3094996-x86-XXX.exe       10/12/2015

so I guess those XP updates are for an XP setup with POSReady updates applied or maybe also for an XP setup with no newer upates installed after April 2014?

Thanks, just not sure if I understand this correctly.

Gents - As this thread remains very expert (and I am not), permit me to ask again whether everyone is happy with these Oct 13 updates from WU-MU on his XP machine and that there are no melt-downs:

KB 3080446

KB 3093983

KB 890830 (mrt)

KB 3085618

KB 3085544

That's what I'm getting in MU - waiting for your OK before I install.

Many thanks!
