I must ask.......when you installed Malwarebytes Home (Free) version 2.2.1.1043, you were given an option during the install process to accept the "trial version" of Malwarebytes.   If you have selected this option, you are no longer scanning manually.   This version of Malwarebytes loads into memory and functions similiar to an anti virus program.   This is not longer the "free home" option which only allows for manual scanning of your computer.   Basically, the (free) version is a stripped down basic program that does not incorporate all the functions of the full Malwarebytes program.   You must be careful during the installation as Malwarebytes has now moved their marketing from a free program to a full paid version with all the bells and whistles.....This is why Version 2.2.1043 is the last version that gives you the option to remain on the (free) side.

Dclem - good point.

I did my best to avoid the trial version and to stick with the long-term free (and essentially passive) version, but I might not have succeeded, as I got a few popups that I had a few days (not 14 days) left on my trial version.

So, if I have time this weekend, I might try again, with only 2.2.1.1043.

Front report:

- I installed IE8 update manually, and the rest (system, ,net, compatibility pack updates) via MU. Update search process wasn't long. installation took about 1 hour.
- Microsoft update page still gets crapped, I needed to reload the page multiple times before I got into the website.
- Installation went smoothly, no issues after the reboot.
- I didn't try modified KB4134651-v2, as it turns out that bugs it brings does not impact on daily usage of my XP machine.

 

Other thoughts:

- shouldn't information about enabling/disabling TLS 1.2 in XP be included in first post for visibility?
- ain't we going a bit too far ot in this thread sometimes? Good discussion is always good discussion, but with the size the thread has it's hard to find useful data from the past posts, and it will be getting only worse... just a thought...

There was never any talk of a modified KB4018556 respectively KB4018556-v2. There were problems with KB4074852, KB4134651 and currently KB4134651-v2, where a modified update was created. For the modification, the file oleaut32.dll was taken from KB4018556-v2 with a change of the file version.

I would prefer that MS would finally publish a working update for oleaut32.dll. The cases of malfunction with Windows XP (all variants) accumulate because of KB4074852, KB4134651 and currently KB4134651-v2. The file oleaut32.dll should definitely be improved and not just have functions removed from it without replacement.

Does it mean anything that the July POS updates now have new dates at  < MS UPDATE > ?

MS is listing them as dated Tuesday and yesterday.  So what did we install last week?

Added those 2 reg entries (disabling RC4, and DES) and got another 4 updates tonight right through the automatic update feature without using IE at all (IE8 sort of gives me the creeps to go online to do even that much). Maybe I'll spend some time and manually update according to that list a few pages back. I have this system heavily disabled, locked down and thinned out whats not being used, so perhaps I won't need all those updates. Should get what I can while I can (Jan 2019 I understand), I guess. I don't really need to do much with this system anyway, old hardware, not worth upgrading; just keep it running. Would rather invest in a new laptop with modern capabilities.

Malwarebytes Version 3.5.1.2522 works just fine here.

Also.. FYI, comodo cleaning essentials (portable) also is working just fine.

Just to keep things fun ...

Yesterday or the day before, my MBAE updated itself and then of course stopped working.  (Naturally!)

I got and (when I try to reinstall) continue to get the following error message:  "The procedure entry point K32GetModuleFileNameExW could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

That's a REAL CLASSIC of an error message. 

Maybe the "entry point" is even a bit ... porno?  (And, like the old dog it is, my PC has ... bad aim?  Really embarrassing.)

Now I bet at least 1 Euro, 10 Yen, 5 Reais or 3 shillings that Den, heinoganda, jaclaz, Dave-H and others here KNOW JUST WHAT TO DO.

Get the MB CleanUp Utility <2> <3> and run it. Reboot. Reinstall the older version of MBAE and disable auto-update (I don't know how to do it but there must be a way). Voilà, it's done!
