I don't know if I should panic quite yet.  I installed those two and tried it again and no love.  Then I figured I'd reboot just to be safe and retry it again and I'm in the same perpetual checking state.

These two updates replace troublesome KB4011064 and KB3213647 i mentioned before. So i think, now they must be installed manually (along with IE cumulative update) to stop "endless search for updates". I'll check this today.

BTW: these two updates replace 30 older updates each, and the new IE cumulative replaces 31. Let me mention that "endless search" started with IE cumulative two months ago. So, i assume proved that any update that replace 29+ older updates is troublesome for the current version of XP WUA.

Just as I expected, manually installing KB4047206 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer), KB4011064, and KB3213647 (new Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack updates) was enough to stop "endless search" for me.

I do not use MS Office 2007, so don't know which (if any) of its updates are troublesome also, sorry. Counting replaced updates for each one manually is a little hard task because MS Updates catalog website shows only 4 rows of the "this update replaces these:..." list at a time and i do not know a better way of retrieve this information.

UPD: I found the way - to copy-paste all the list to any text editor. Now i can put forward a hypothesis:

KB4011266 and KB4011199 are "bad" and need to be installed manually (in addition to the three other "bad" updates i mention above).

KB4011203 and KB4011276 are "good", so they may be founded and installed automatically after you install all the "bad" updates that your system needs.

Will someone check this?

Disable automatic updates first, restart the PC, manual installation of cumulative update of IE8 (KB4047206), Security Update for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3 (KB4011265) and Security Update for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3 (KB4011205). After these updates are installed, the search should work properly with IE8 under Microsoft Update. If there are still problems, send me a PM.

I think you have the key there.  But I left mine to run overnight to since i didn't see your turning off the Automatic Updates suggestions.  When I looked this morning it found the XP Updates, and even the IE8 one that I had already installed.  After I rebooted and turned off Automatic Updates it went through the manual check process fast, but didn't find any other updates.  I suppose that makes sense since i have Office 2003, and not 2007.  I thought maybe some of the updates would affect the older Office version but apparently not.

When I ran Belarc Advisor it found 2 missing updates.  The first one I've had all along and discarded as I thought it was just that annoying get of XP message Microsoft loved the broadcast.  I'm assuming the second one is the same but for Office?  1) EOL-MICROSOFT-WINXP  2) EOL-MICROSOFT-OFFICE03

Sure! You may ignore those two all right. If installed they'd just nag you and serve no other purpose. You're better without the two of 'em. Great to hear your system is OK now!

Thanks!  It's okay because of guys like you and Mr. H!  Had I have been left on my own to keep my pc updated it would have burst into flames years ago.  ;)

It takes about 1.5 hours on a 3.2 GHz CPU to find missing KB4047206 (IE Cumulative update) only. Assuming that other "bad" updates would take the same time, a PC with XP and Office 2007 installed needs more than 7 hours to finish its search this month.

Den shamed made me for always being the last one into the water (although I normally prefer swimming after the sharks are well fed), so I ran the updates ASAP last night BEFORE Dave-H gave us the "all clear".  Was a bumpy process - not speedy.

First, Belarc shows the following, which I had first downloaded and installed manually from the links above:

  • KB4011265 on 11/14/2017
  • KB4047206-IE8 on 11/15/2017

Second, "Review Your Update History" shows me the following, and these are what came in through the yellow shield after the two above:

  • Windows XP Embedded Security Update for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4047211) Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Automatic Updates
  • Windows XP Embedded 2017-11 Security Update for Windows XP Embedded SP3 for x86-based Systems (KB4048968) Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Automatic Updates
  • Windows XP Embedded Security Update for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4048970) Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Automatic Updates
  • Office 2007 Security Update for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3 (KB4011205) Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Automatic Updates
  • Windows XP Embedded Security Update for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4050795) Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Automatic Updates

Third - weird man - Belarc also shows the following WITHOUT A DATE - THE DATE IS BLANK !!!!!!!:

  • KB4011205

So - do I have everything, or did I leave my umbrella, my right glove and my homework in the taxi?  And what about that blank date? - that's new - never before.

I would like to know which updates have been reported as missing by Belarc Advisor to detect a possible conflict with an update after April 2014.

@dencorso

What I do not understand is that the users know that this problem with the svchost CPU usage is repeated in almost every month and still have automatic updates enabled!
