Mcinwwl
I had to wait for more than 12 hours to see the updates. The thing is, Wu on XP has some problems with Avast! on my machine, so I have disabled all the IS programs, and this PC is used by my family members. And I needed to bail out of home at the time, hoping nothing bad will happen. But finally I got 'em all, including Office 2007 updates. @FranceBB I think You have said you are in touch with Avast! devs and that you are aware of problems, that this software has on XP. Are they planning to fix em? I don't really expect them to do anything in favor of POSReady updates, since they are not a part of XP (officially), but Avast! turned on prevents me from scanning a document, and this is a serious issue for me. Already thinking of changing the AV solution on my PC...
liamZ
Hi, I was an Avast user too, but since it began to cause troubles with Windows update, I moved to Avira. Another thing I realized was that every time an office update went wrong because of avast, it left a bunch of duplicates msp files on my c:\windows\installer folder. Removing them was a time consuming task cause I had to search in the registry what was the real uninstaller for the office patch and delete the others. heinoganda
I have the trouble, after which I am already longer version 10 version of the Avast virus scanner under Windows XP as no longer usable (extreme short-term utilization up to pauses of the system in various actions). Now that I always again newer versions of Avast tested, I noticed with the current version 17.2.3419.0, which many problems as with Office 2003 or with WinRAR where existing archives can not be edited, no longer exist. Same at the performance, just running again liquid. However, under Windows XP on various extras should be renounced, since these cause more problems than have a benefit. As follows I have installed Avast and made settings. Modules I have installed Settings Settings for the Web Shield module Lastly under Settings / Troubleshooting Edited March 27, 2017 by heinoganda
SD73
I've been using the free edition of Bitdefender since XP lost support. It seems to run very light and trouble free for those wanting to check out something different. I have had a few instances where I needed to empty my SoftwareDistribution directory because some patches kept wanting to reinstall, but I am not sure if it had anything to do with Bitdefender as I was having that issue on occasion prior to the move. Bersaglio
In case someone interested I've been using two free antiviruses on different systems with Windows XP SP3: Microsoft Security Essentials 4.4.304.0 on slow machines (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and earlier) and Kasreprsky Free Antivirus(KFA) 17.0.0.611(d) on faster ones (Core i3 and higher). But sadly Kasreprsky Free Antivirus is only available in several russian-speaking countries (Belarus, Ukraine and Russia). None of these antiviruses interfere Windows Update processes, and does not significantly slow down systems, however, no doubt, Kaspersky is more demanding to system resources and needs disabling several features (like scripts interacting with web pages or HTTPS-connections checking). But many computer security laboratories consider Kaspersky as the best antivirus according to their tests, by the way... heinoganda
This HTTPS Connections check, however the virus scanner manufacturers call it, is simply not meant to end and makes just under Windows XP only problems with the checks of the certificates, because the Windows internal Certificate Manager is used, the more current encryption types no longer Supported. Especially with Firefox or Chromium based web browsers, it leads to the fact that many encrypted websites can no longer be opened.
niko32
On topic of antiviruses, I've tried several at friends computer with XP and leaved it with same Microsoft Security Essentials version as Bersaglio, as it had the least impact on system. As for my XP, now XP POSready, antivirus induced unavoidable slowdown was a thing I couldn't accept. It's been without antivirus since 2009, and haven't had any problems. Of course, I consider myself quite experienced computer user, and using Firewall, Firefox heavily guarded with NoScript (default to block scripts), RequestPolicy Continued and what not. And sometimes using ClamWin or online Antivirus sites for suspicious downloaded files. I know it's probably vulnerable to some threats, but I'm usually not looking for them. I'm not advocating for not using antivirus programs, I just wanted to point that at most cases common sense is the best defense. heinoganda
@Bersaglio With me it takes still a bit until I deal with the Office updates, because I manually download the updates via WSUS and bring together in an Updaterollup. With the direct links it is of course faster, but I think there are also many users who have a different language version of Windows XP, so my links via WSUS with search query where the updates match the language of the webbrowser offered. There is a serious security problem with Word (I worry about Word 2003). Updates are available for Office 2007 and Office 2007 Compatibility Packs, as well as for Wordpad under Windows XP (KB4014793). Thanks for the supplement. SD73
Gentlemen, I'm not having much luck installing these downloads. These two installed just fine. http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/csa/csa/secu/2017/04/NDP20SP2-KB4014580-x86_00BC481A903B582272CAE81E76334295A1209F73.exe http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/csa/csa/secu/2017/04/NDP40-KB4014570-x86_DA912E6659C218306C1850642966AE13AC114051.exe The remaining ones gave me an error stating "The System Cannot Find the File Specified" each time I double clicked the file to install. That was for each of the other dozen or so files. I tried downloading them directly from the XP PC, and also from my laptop to a USB stick to try it from a different source. The problem persists with my antivirus software disabled. Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated! glnz
Brothers - My yellow shield shows twelve, being the same as Bersaglio's list of fourteen less Silverlight (which I uninstalled a long time ago) and KB4017018. Does anyone know what is that KB4017018? Edited April 12, 2017 by glnz
heinoganda
@SD73 With me it takes still until I can carry out various tests, as there were some updates this month. @glnz KB4017018 (gdi32.dll) seems to be a rework to KB4012583 in March (gdi32.dll, usp10.dll, gdiplus.dll). In the security bulletins, I have not found any information at this time. Edited April 12, 2017 by heinoganda
