POSReady 2009 updates ported to Windows XP SP3 ENU

hmuellers - again helpful - you prompted me to check and so I just uninstalled NET 1.1.

In add/remove programs, the lead entry for NET 3.5 says "Used rarely -- Last used on 2/1/2009", but I wonder how accurate that is.

[For Mozilla Firefox 42, it says "Used occasionally -- Last used on 11/7/2015", and that ain't accurate.  It should say "Used too much (get some exercise) -- Last used this instant."]
But I've left NET 3.5 in for the moment.  What is everyone's experience after removing NET 3.5?

Finally, does EMET play nice with Avast AV Free, and does EMET use too many resources or slow things down?

Thanks again.

@hmuellers

For .NET Framework replaced Updates:

NDP30SP2-KB3048073-v2-x86  replaced by NDP30SP2-KB3072308-x86
NDP40-KB2979575-v2-x86 replaced by NDP40-KB3097994-x86
NDP40-KB3072309-x86 replaced by NDP40-KB3099866-x86

:)

Hi, KB3099866 replaces KB3048074 too.

And if I'm not wrong there are two more net4 updates that are no longer needed:

KB291365 updates these files:

Setup.exe: 10.0.30319.1023

SetupEngine.dll: 10.0.30319.1023

SetupUi.dll    : 10.0.30319.1023

System.Runtime.Remoting.dll: 4.0.30319.1023

and after applying all updates they are on version 1044

KB2938780 updates these files:

Setup.exe: 10.0.30319.1024

SetupEngine.dll: 10.0.30319.1024

SetupUi.dll    : 10.0.30319.1024

System.dll    : 4.0.30319.1024

after aplying all updates system.dll version is 4.0.3019.1026

So from hmuellers list these updates are no longer needed:

NET 3:

KB3048073

NET 4:

KB291365

KB2938780

KB2979575-v2

KB3048074

KB3072309

dencorso - if we have IE 8, should we try to install the IE6 version of KB3124275 anyway?

(And, sorry, but could you re-post the link for MS Update Catalog?)

Thanks again.

The Update Catalogue is here.

The update will not install if you have IE8 installed.

I extracted the files from it using Universal Extractor.

I haven't tried it yet but I assume just replacing the browseui.dll and shdocvw.dll files in  the system32 folder will do the trick.

Easy for me as I have a multi-boot system, but it may have to be done in Safe Mode if you haven't.

Don't forget to replace the files in the DLLCache folder too.

Friends -- I just realized these forums remind me of sending "pen-pal" letters when I was 9 or 10 years old to other grade-school kids around the world -- Dave-H is in England, heinoganda in Germany, dencorso in Brazil (sempre saudades do Brasil!), Mcinwwl in Portugal (tenho tambem boas lembrancas da Algarve), pao8804 in Italy (planning a trip to Sardenia or Panarea ?), blackwingcat from Japan, etc.  But we don't send each other exotic postage stamps any more.

Anyway, how go yesterday's updates?  No crash-and-burns?  No hard drives getting offended, pulling off their aprons and walking out?  ("How dare you treat me like a cash register!")

Thanks, as always.

The IE6 update is needed to workaround the following problem:

KB972582 - You receive an empty dialog box when you run the "Rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll, DoOrganizeFavDlg" command

I integrate both the IE6 and IE8 updates using HFSLIP. On my running system I don't try to update browseui.dll and shdocvw.dll as these files are only upped in version number. Using an older version of these files is fine as these files are not used by Internet Explorer 8.

About crashes and burns using PosReady 2009 updates I have not had any, but you may run into some unexplained issues. I ran into a very specific Firefox crash problem on some site and after spending way too much time on it I suspect that a GDI or Win32k security fix was the cause of the issue. You can read about my experience here:

Well I've installed all the updates offered by Microsoft Update, and substituted the browseui.dll and shdocvw.dll files for the later versions (thanks @dencorso!), and no problems seen (touch wood!)

This has fixed the blank dialogue box as mentioned by @Acheron above.

Not something I'd ever noticed, but good that it's been fixed!

Hi @SD73.

Just download the update file from here.

You will need to use Internet Explorer.

Then run the downloaded file with the switches /q /x: "<outdir>"

This should extract the files to a folder in the root of the drive and you will find the two files you need in there in the SP3QFE subfolder.

:)
