Google Translate and HTTPS "bug"

Recommended Posts

Well isn't this just dandy!

Using

https://translate.google.com/
and entering a WebSite address it issues the following
This page was not retrieved from its original location over a secure connection
although entering TEXT for translation works fine.

After digging a little and then trying it, IMMEDIATELY after the message is issued (DO NOT click "Dismiss"), remove the "S" in the Address Bar to force non-Secure. ANOTHER message will be issued

Translated in Safe Mode. This may cause problems with some websites, especially those that use plugins like Flash.
IGNORE IT!

I wondered why it begain failing recently. Note that it FORCES the "S" in until you use the above procedure. Gotta love Google for going WAY overboard!

Your other alternative is BING Translate or "some other" Online Website Translator.

I certainly hope this helps someone. (@#$%^&* sez I...)

Hmmm  Seems to work fine for me, but then you and I have had a couple of other web differences as well, such as access to mim0's site.  Maybe this is another symptom of a bigger problem?

Cheers and Regards

I confirm the behavior reported by submix8c.

It seems to depend on whether the target site responds as expected to "https" or not.

As for alternatives, the third, which was Alta Vista's BabelFish (afterwards bought by Yahoo!), seems to be no more.

So, for all purposes, we're left with just two choices nowadays (and both are not really good but, then again, machine translation is probably one of the hardest open problems of all times).

??? Maybe Enabling SSL2 or SSL3 (in FF)? The strange part is Google Translate DID work just fine! And to note that I DID change my DNS Servers in the Router -and- the XPSP3 -does- have IE8 Installed (SSL2?).

If you Google that first phrase you'll find it's been happening.

Oh, and to note that "HTTPS" is -not- auto-inserted into, e.g. MSFN. Therefore one must -assume- that the Website has something to do with it(?). AND... NOPE! Disabled both SSL2 -and-SSL3 in my Test Bed XP. Guess I should note (also) that my XP (and my running OS) are -not- updated past the latest Service Pack (maybe that's it???).

Phhht - Under XPSP3+IE8, going to Google Translate I get a message

Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?

And the HFSLIp website STILL doesn't "fly". AND I did this (for Google Translate) and it fails to even TRY to translate! http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_other/stopping-security-warnings-on-trusted-sites/3f5bc58a-30d2-4dd8-a395-c556d19973f6

The German one here -

Go figure...

edit - THANK you dencorso! VINDICATED!

Now about the HFSLIP ALTERVISTA website. As I have previously stated -any- other AlterVista websites (except the ROOT Domain Name) work just fine.

No. Mine is as up-to-date as possible (with all MS has offered, except KB905474 and KB2934207, of course), plus a few select unofficial updates, too.

@jaclaz -

Guess what? I can currently access HFSLIP just fine - in both the Running OS (w/FF12) and the above XP(w/IE8). As I have repeatedly stated (as have others), it -appears- to be "randomly" inaccessible.

Just because PersonA said they can't at TimeA and subesequently PersonB said they can at TimeB doesn't constitute PersonA's assertion that at TimeA there is a problem that they are wrong. (Jumbled sentence, hope you understand the point.)

So, PLEASE, folks, don't be PersonB.

Thank you, and HTH

Maybe I should somehow archive/mirror the website? Any suggestions on what software should be used? I -assume- that this will work (same info both links) -

http://www.createdbypete.com/articles/make-a-local-website-mirror-with-wget/

http://fosswire.com/post/2008/04/create-a-mirror-of-a-website-with-wget/

At least that way I can insert it into my personal website and can enable it for anyone that may need (archived) access.

Thoughts/comments/suggestions? Bueller, Bueller?

Well you might ask this here -

Will Google® disable this workaround when they see people using it ??

...but I don't think anyone here knows the answer. Ask Google® instead. ;)
