xpclient Posted April 5, 2014 Share Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) The default icon is the first icon in shell32.dll and it can be changed by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons in the registry. Create a string value called 0 there and the value data should be the path of the icon, e.g. C:\Windows\Notepad.exe,1. Then send a shell change notification to force Explorer to rebuild its shell image list or restart Windows.
