How to i get touchpad work in Windows 98 SE?

Hi!

I have a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT who have a touchpad. I have installed the latest driver from Synaptics for Windows 98 SE. It's called Synaptics Touchpad for Windows 98/ME v8.1.2. But when i have installed the touchpad Win98 cannot find the touchpad.

I have tried to press "Add new hardware" but i cannot find any touchpad there.

The problem is that i think i have not installed hardware drivers for the touchpad, only configurations drivers for the touchpad.

Have i?

From the readme.txt:

Installation procedure
-------------------------------------------------------
First, if you have a new Pointing Device, plug it in and reboot Windows 98/ME.
Windows 98/ME will then detect your new Pointing Device and
install a standard mouse driver to handle it. You cannot install the
Synaptics Pointing Device driver until this process is complete and your
Pointing Device is functioning as a normal pointing device.

Is this what you did/experienced?

Okej. But my laptop cannot find the poitning device.

On TinyCore Linux to check devices:

(but what Linux can "see", not necessarily is the same as what Windows 9x can)

What do you have in Device Manager?

Do you have a "Mouse" item?

Or you have a yellow question mark?

No, not necessarily.

Let's start again.

Is your touchpad working right now?

Does it appear in device manager as "Mouse"?

Or as something else?

Checking it's properties, WHICH dirver is it using?

Or it is missing in device manager listing?

You see, my ESP capabilities are at the lowest level, and my crystal ball is in the shop (again ) for tuning, thus I have no way to understand what hapens on your PC unless you DETAIL and DESCRIBE it.

I use a common convention where I use a question mark (the little "hook" sign) to distinguish questions from statements, I would expect an EXACT answer to each of the question I ask, remember that I am asking these questions in order to try and help you.
