I prefer http://www.oldversion.com since it seems pretty IE5 friendly so if you don't quite have Windows 98 up to snuff, you can still download stuff easily without much guff, especially if you're looking to grab a version of Firefox right off the bat.

That's another nice site. Almost forgot about them.

fixed some broken links... and updated version numbers...

Thank you LostInSpace2012! :-)

A nice site to look at for latest updated versions of common programs is http://www.oldapps.com/ .

Windows 98SE is quite usable with Internet Explore 5 if you disable Javascript.

95% of the sites I use including MSFN will work even with Javascript disabled, it's the Javascript that crashes the site. The other 5% will work but limited functionality. Go into Internet Options and disable "active scripting".

I tried IE5 a few months ago for the fun of it..... yes, it still works without javascript. Turn on javascript and you'll probably instantly crash your computer on any website more complex than, say, the Drudge Report.. It ain't pretty.

You can use the "Off by One" browser and still log into MSFN. And it looks even worse than IE 5. But for a 1 megabyte browser that could fit on a floppy disk, it's quite impressive.

I'd suggest "upgrading" your browser to at least K-Meleon 1.5.4 or SeaMonkey 1.1.19 and turn off javascript as well. I consider those the absolute bare minimum for Windows 98/Me. Anything more advanced requires KernelEx or a newer computer.

In my experience most if not all webpages utilize "graceful degradation" for browsers that don't support javascript or have it disabled.

In the last six months I have logged in and posted on this forum (and several other forums) with a Windows 3.1 machine with javascript disabled and very old versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape, both 16 bit browsers. These machines are not hooked up wirelessly and always behind a hardware router firewall.

A trick for Facebook and many modern webpages is that they will load in unsupported browsers simply by using the mobile "m" version, http://m.facebook.com.

You may or may not find the files, but those are the names (as I have them stored, I might have renamed some of them slightly) and SHA1's of the official updates as offered once upon a time through Windows Update.

and from another thread there's this list....

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and have just built a new win98 box. I use it as my office workstation with CAD program and lots of graphics software which will not run on newer versions of windows.

So i will run spybot 1.6.2 which still updates.

I thought I would add 2 more items of software to the list.

Solo antivirus from http://www.srnmicro.com/ I have used it for some time on the previous box. 30 day free trial with an annual licence fee. Well worth supporting. Runs on 95 98 me, nt4 2000 xp and up.

A few more random bits of software. I used to use Iconedit32 for creating new icons but I cannot locate the installer. However some interesting ms tools here:- ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/samples/ps/win98/reskit/desktop/ - Download these groups of files into the same folder: ( ANIEDIT.CNT, ANIEDIT.EXE + ANIEDIT.HLP. IMAGEDIT.EXE + IMAGEDIT.HLP. )

Some old software links here not all of them work - http://www.oocities.org/gafoortc/soft.htm :

Eraser current version - http://eraser.heidi.ie/ plus check out notrax secure browser :

Plant studio freeware 3d - http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/PlantStudio/index.htm :

Ziprepair - http://www.diskinternals.com/zip-repair/features.shtml :

I struggle finding a good media player that will play any file. Gom player is useless

as is vlc player. Media player classic and wmp9 play some files. So I use a portable version of SMPlayer - portable 0.6.4. Installer works but nags about needing win2000. Plays most files but has a bug I can live with. When you open a file the program opens a dos box which if you then click the player window the dos box sits behind. Error message on shutting down the player. But as it does not install anything to the system

does not appear to be a problem.

Bumping this topic because I'm rebuilding/fixing it.

Will add lots more in upcoming days/weeks. Going to list as much Win9x software as possible, before it all disappears for good or becomes too hard to find.
