Black screen with white moveable cursor

I have the problem that my Windows Vista partition boots into a black screen with a white moveable cursor. It seems that this is a problem that a large number of Vista users have encountered. In my case the problem occurred after resizing the Vista partition. Microsoft does not offer any single solution. I also have Windows XP and Windows 7 working in what was a triple boot system. I need to know what I can do without fear of losing the triple boot loader. I read about the bootrec.exe commands but I'm not clear if either of those overwrites the MBR or not. I have tried most if not all of the Windows repair options on the Windows Vista DVD. The repair option reported no problem in fact it records the black screen event as successful boots. I am not able to access safe mode normally (only by Ctrl-Alt-Del from black screen) and when I access it in that way it tells me I have no restore points saved. I tried SFC /Scannow after going Crtl-Alt-Del which replaced some files but did not fix the problem itself.. SFC also reported something about being unable to repair some Windows Protected Fles. There are a ton of other possible fixes that I have read about out there, but I need to know which ones will not overwrite my MBR so I don't try those destructive ones until I have time available for more extensive repairs.. Is there a way to do a Vista installation/repair wihout losing the exising bootloader. I don't know if it will help accessing the Vista partition from XP or Win7. Will EasyBCD bring back the bootlaader? Thanks in advance for any further suggestions.
