Fully agree with Mequa on StartIsBack + Aero Glass for Win 8.1 are must have for Win 8.1 users without touch screen.

These 2 applications help us to get best of both worlds (Win7 UI + Win8 improved speed & stableness)

Win8 improved speed & stableness

That's a myth. There's no measurable difference in either in the general case.

It's not a myth... may be in depend on different process..., stableness i am not that sure win7 look more stable

One thing for sure, boot speed is improved a lot

What does that mean? I used the same installation usb on both my computer and laptop and as ive said the laptop works fine? Could it be because I went from 7 to 8 to 8.1? On the laptop I just did a clean install. It does seems to have gone a bit weird on the metro start screen. I use start8 on the computer and laptop but on the computer if I go to the actual window 8 start screen some of the things are missing eg show desktop and a lot of my installed apps

It simply means that the system is somehow cracked, corrupted or hardware is bad. You can provide minidump file for dwm.exe so I can check it more deeply.

No, it really hasn't. On my PC, without fast startup (which doesn't properly shutdown the system, writes at least half of your RAM to disk every shutdown and can cause all kinds of weird issues), an equally setup win8.1 installation has the same boot time as win7. Comparing fresh installations, win7 is leading by a couple of seconds, especially because shutting down via win+x didn't enter fast mode but fully shut down the system (fixed in latest rollup update, optional)

As for stability... on win7 I have GPU driver crashes. On win8.1 I'm having sporadical "reference_by_pointer" crashes. Can't say which is more annoying.

On my computer boot time is the same as win 7 however on my laptop it is way faster. weirdly the computer is better spec as well but boots slower. Although on my laptop i did a clean install and on the computer i upgraded 7 to 8 to 8.1

@BigMuscle how do i dump dwm.exe?

on task manager on process list right click on dwm.exe and create a dump file, zip or rar it with max compression and post it

FYI, for years I ran Windows 7 all the time between only the reboots mandated by Windows Updates. Usually that was a few weeks to a month. Now I run Windows 8.1 all the time between reboots mandated by Windows Updates.

Ergo, no difference in stability.

I have done a LOT of objective testing. With two identical systems, freshly setup and with the same tweaks for best performance (e.g., disable write cache buffer flushing, etc. etc.) Windows 7 is faster at some things and Windows 8 is faster at some things.

Unfortunately, Windows 8.1 actually seems to have slowed down file system operations some. Enumerating files in a folder is decidedly slower - which means File Explorer doesn't come up as quickly, navigating through folders is slightly slower, etc. I have issues logged with Microsoft and the author of the RAID driver I use on this with no answer so far.

As an experiment (especially if you have an SSD):

Open File Explorer to the root of drive C:

Go into the right (files) pane, and select all.

Right click, and choose Properties.

Time how long it takes to stop enumerating files.

Now do it again, after the file system structure has been read into memory by the first run.

With Windows 7 my system would enumerate 30,000 files per second the first time, and 50,000 files per second the second time (running from the cached data). With Windows 8.1 it's 10,000 and 17,000 respectively. That's no small degradation in performance!

post-388512-0-96200100-1392951303_thumb.'Explorer' windows issues. Big Muscle or someone, Please help...

Windows 8.1 File 'Explorer' windows are NOT applying either the text glow OR the new 'ColorizationColorCaption' settings, it simply defaults to 'black' window title/captions and no glow effect. I'm using the standard 'win8rtm.png' atlas and all other features are working perfectly. Many users are having this same issue. What is the best solution to get consistent window captions and glow effect? It would be great if this simple consistency could be provided directly from the AeroGlass utility and not require us to install some hack or 3rd party theme or tool to accomplish this. Thanks, -JT

how to get the explorer.exe's text glow effect? while other applications are ok.

something problem?

I have the same problem (Both Chinese).

You have to use a theme atlas that supports glow or you have to use a theme that supports glow in all windows.

I use the 8 Plus theme from dA and have glow everywhere.
