Young users see Facebook as 'dead and buried'

Matthew Sparkes

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/facebook/10539274/Young-users-see-Facebook-as-dead-and-buried.html

A study of how teenagers use social media has found that Facebook is “not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried”, but that the network is morphing into a tool for keeping in touch with older family members.

A study of how older teenagers use social media has found that Facebook is “not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried” and is being replaced by simpler social networks such as Twitter and Snapchat.

Young people now see the site as “uncool” and keep their profiles live purely to stay in touch with older relatives, among whom it remains popular.

Professor Daniel Miller of University College London, an anthropologist who worked on the research, wrote in an article for academic news website The Conversation: “Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it.

“This year marked the start of what looks likely to be a sustained decline of what had been the most pervasive of all social networking sites. Young people are turning away in their droves and adopting other social networks instead, while the worst people of all, their parents, continue to use the service.

“Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives. Parents have worked out how to use the site and see it as a way for the family to remain connected. In response, the young are moving on to cooler things.

The sooner Facebook goes down the memory hole the better. People deserve (and require) privacy, even if they don't quite realize it, nowadays. What I really miss is good old usenet, like it was before eternal september. Nowadays all that remains is a brainless spam flood... :(

Here, Here ... I'll drink to that !

Wonder how the company stock will do in 2014 as the active numbers drop and really young people now ... as they get older, just never sign-up.

I find this interesting in the article:

WhatsApp has overtaken Facebook as the number one way to send messages, say the researchers, while Snapchat has gained in popularity in recent months by allowing users to send images which “self-destruct” after a short period on the recipients phone in order to maintain privacy.

Snapchat claims that 350 million images are sent every day, and reportedly recently turned down a $3 billion (£1.8 billion) acquisition offer from Facebook. Co-founder Evan Spiegel, who lives at home with his father despite an estimated net worth of $3 billion, last month told The Telegraph that “deleting should be the default”.

... turning down an offer of $3 billion? ... take the money and run, enjoy the short life we all have on this planet. Always something "new" on the horizon to sink your ship !

The non-target audience always kills the social networking site. Myspace was for the music industry and Facebook was for college students. Although, if they stuck to those demographics I doubt either of those sites would have made as much money as they had.

Reading up a little more on Snapchat, just in July (2013) they were valued around $800 million and in four months (Nov) $3 billion and the company has never made a penny in revenue. However, some on Wall Street think $4 billion would be fair ... for a company with zero revenue or profits.

Maybe they can get another billion or two ... man, why couldn't I think of putting a company or something together that will probably never make money or a profit but still be worth $3 billion? What other "billion dollar" no profit companies are lurking just around the corner? Maybe it will all work, people went crazy over "tulips" in the 1600's!

Tulip Mania

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania

Tulip mania or tulipomania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed.

At the peak of tulip mania, in March 1637, some single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman.

always hated and always will all this era of "social" crap

IRC, e-mail and forums rule !

I don't think social media is going away at all. Just more Twitter (which I loathe)

I like certain groups on Facebook (ones with Vintage pictures, history and the like) but I think that's an example of how Facebook is attracting older audiences.

the only use of FB what I saw is to find maybe lost relatives who got themself a computer and internet
but youngsters lost their ways of living and socialising in somewhat standard way (not saying normal coz even without it aint normal what they do these days)

Thank gosherutties it is dying. It was only about a matter of time before it became uncoot, uncool, uncrewl. in fact it is just about as crewl as ever.

People used facebook for the following reasons.

They want to rekindle old love, meaning people they had or could have had sex with. Another way for that Boomer/Exer to get into another pair of undies, and golddiggers to get down peoples wallets. Then of course is the dumb teens, who post sexual videos, and sexual images, and helps support the fem-nazi ( womanist, magvg ) regime, and calls everybody who looks healthy, ( you get the idea ). The same goes for the two dudes, who took a photo with a wad of money inside a car. Maybe even that woman with high electric bill. Bottom line, facebook is more like excuse to pass retarded laws book, and limit internet privacy book. Finally everybody is using facebook to advertise, and open conversation.

Asides that.

These newcomers, are trying to have their privacy and are seeing, too many people annoy them at one time. They, like me, have the idea that everything on facebook is unprivate. Like back when we would stand in line for the candy at the grocery store, and our Deans came out with their blow-horns and told us to come to class, and even yelled at the store owner.

More like Nightmare on Elmstreet book. Back in my college, they playing the movie, trying make the creator of facebook a positive thing. If he did not have his lawyer mom, he would be up in neck with bills, and would be forced to sell facebook.

Facebook May Lose 80% of Its User Base by 2017

Social networks function like infectious diseases, according to Princeton researchers. They spread fast—and then disappear.

Like the bubonic plague, Facebook will eventually come to an end.

According to new research from Princeton, which compared the ”adoption and abandonment dynamics” of social networks by “drawing analogy to the dynamics that govern the spread of infectious disease,” Facebook is beginning to die out.

Specifically, the researchers concluded that “Facebook will undergo a rapid decline in the coming years, losing 80 percent of its peak user base between 2015 and 2017.”

My .02cents -

May be, but it seems the -only- way of getting any info about my family. I guess they forgot what a telephone was for. Yes, I also have an Account (2 actually, because # of Song Limits) at MySpace - used specifically to allow -anyone- to listen to the JusTus songs. Twitter is for Political Stupidity and I get a -lot- of news that MSM doesn't report, due to MSM cherry-picking.

That is all and refuse to get into said TwitterVerse subjects.

*** Not sure what is going on with this topic. I had no intention or desire to reopen this topic, it's pretty old. However, someone posted a reply yesterday, which is now gone or removed, and I added an update reply to the topic. There was also a reply posted "after" my reply which is also gone or removed. So my reply update is the only one left standing ... why, have no clue?

In summary ... I did not revive this topic.

......

Well, when I started that topic last year ... Facebook seem to be getting a lot of "negative" press and the stock wasn't all that hot ... after the rough start.

However ... months later he (CEO Mark Zuckerberg) has become very rich ... good or bad, Facebook has made a lot of money for him and others.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is world 16th richest man: Surpassed Google co-founders and Amazon chairman

http://www.techtimes.com/articles/11311/20140726/facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-is-world-16th-richest-man-surpassed-google-co-founders-and-amazon-chairman.htm

Vamien McKalin, Tech Times | July 26, 2014

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is now richer than both Google founders and Amazon's chairman. On Thursday, Zuckerberg's net worth rose to $33.3 billion, which makes the hoodie-wearing CEO number 16 on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index.

On the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Google's co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin ranks number 17 and number 18 respectively, with a net worth of around $33.1 billion and $32.8 billion. Furthermore, Zuckerberg has also grown richer than Amazon's chairman, Jeff Bezos, whose net worth is somewhere around $32.6 billion, which makes him the 20th richest person in the world.

The reason why Zuckerberg has surpassed the Google co-founders and Amazon's chairman is mainly because Facebook closed at a new record on Thursday. The social network managed to report second-quarter sales at around $2.91 billion, which exceeds the $2.81 billion estimated by analysts.

This jump in profits added around $1.6 billion to Mark Zuckerberg's personal coffers.

At the moment, Zuckerberg is 30 and already the 16th richest person in the world. However, he has a lot of grounds to cover if he's interested in surpassing the richest man in the world, Bill Gates. As of now, Gates net worth is somewhere around $84.7 billion, and as long as he owns shares in Microsoft, it may take a long time before Gates slips from the top. Though, it would depend on how well the software company performs in the coming years.

Bill Gates isn't the only ahead of Mark Zuckerberg, obviously. He sits behind number 2 richest man in the world, Carlos Slim, who has a net worth of $78.8 billion. Slim made his billions by being a telecommunication tycoon. Furthermore, there's also Spain's Amancio Ortega, who is the majority owner of the Inditex, the world's largest clothing retailer.

Ortega currently has a net worth of around $63.9 billion.

We can't talk about the billionaire party boys without including Warren Buffet, the 4th richest man in the world with a net worth of $63 billion.

With increased competition from Google+ and Pinterest, Facebook's future growth might not be enough to kick Zuckerberg's profits to Gates-like worth. Already, we're seen that social network users tend to prefer Pinterest and Google+ over Facebook, according to a recent report.
