KBDUS.DLL issues

I have a Dell Studio One 1909 with a new SATA drive and Windows 7 installed. The computer will not read any verified working cd copies of WIndows xp 32-bit. It will read other cds, like my original of Windows 7. I have a bootable USB drive with Windows XP professional SP3 32-bit with drivers slip streamed using nLite. I can boot from this USB drive but i get an error: cannot load KBDUS.DLL. Shut down or restart.

I have tried setting all permissions to full control on my USB drive and still get the error. I also tried using a different keyboard, the first is a wireless keyboard and the second a wired USB keyboard. I have also tried uninstalling the keyboards before restarting. The only way i can get past this error is to unplug the keyboard entirely after selecting to boot from the flash drive and selecting the windows setup. If i unplug, the setup loads all files correctly and asks me to push Enter to install WINXP but i cant, because i have no keyboard!

Any insight to this issue would be greatly appreciated. Im stuck.

Have you re-formatted the partition on which you are going to install XP (more exactly where the $Win_nt$.~bt will be written, to, usually the primary, active partition) through the setup?

Or is it a NTFS partition formatted from the Windows 7?

What is your partitioning scheme?

Can you try (for experiment) to install to a FAT 16 or 32 formatted partition?

That is an error (probably) that is connected to either NTFS/ACL permissions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246187/en-us

or *somehow* with boot order/drive letter assignment, see this:

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/121114-sp3-usb-multiboot-10-kbdusdll-error/

And there is another similar issue in a seemingly completely unrelated thread (as well possibly connected with device order/drive letter):

Im trying to dual boot. I was following this walkthrough. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html%C2'>

It is a NTFS partition created through windows 7.

Is there some other step i need to take when partitioning the drive other than

1.Shrink volume

2. assign letter

3.boot xp?

I thought when i loaded the WINXP setup it would let select the partition and format it for winxp.

There may be, as hinted in the given links TWO different problems that may cause that behaviour.

  1. If the target volume is formatted as NTFS and it is formatted as such on a later system, it is possible that the NTFS permissions get in the way.
  2. The specific BIOS of the machine (or an unsuitable command in device mapping) "confuses" the install routine.

The questions I asked (and to which you did not answer) were asked in order to understand your current setup/procedure and (hopefully) provide some possible - if not solution - workaround.

What is your strategy installing XP from that drive ? I mean what tool did you use to to make it bootable and to copy the install files on it (if any) ? Or is it an USB CD drive ?
