Several Win 95 Questions

Recommended Posts

I have the Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller and the USB Root Hub in Device Manager. Now the loading box for the Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller is coming up requesting the openhci.sys file. Do I need that or should I ignore that?

Try pointing the Driver dialog to... C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM,.... The installation may have pre-copied the files to the proper locations, but the INF file is requesting them to copy again. This happens sometimes, even with Microsoft's own USBSUPP updates. :}

Did you install USBSUPP.EXE and then USBUPD2.EXE (see Post #2)?

If you use the two official USBSUPP packages, do NOT use my XUSBSUPP update that I linked. They should not be mixed.

XUSBSUPP, while itself "unofficial," merges ALL available official USB-related updates into ONE installation.

(Includes USBSUPP.EXE, USBUPD2.EXE, and 4 or 5 HotFixes)

In lower center right is the J1 jumper for onboard video. Is this the right setting to enable Onboard Video?

Thx :w00t:

You said "lower center right" ? Either my eyes are failing me or you posted the wrong photo. I see no jumpers in there. Unless maybe in that dark area to the left of the big cap in the center of the photo. Can you use a reference like "to the left of" any of the shown items ( e.g., audio cable or floppy ribbon cable, or the three empty connectors, or those two big IC's, the small cap, the transistor ... ).

Or you could just circle it in a image editor. :thumbup

P.S. if it is behind that big cap, the trick to taking a picture is to have a small LED flashlight on it to cancel the shadow before you snap the picture. The flash from the camera will almost always cause a different picture than you expect because of incidental shadows that do not exist until you take the photo.

To translate Charlotte's post in plain English:

Hoko, you SUCK at taking photos! :w00t: AND Charlotte's eyesight is not as good as it once was!

;)

The Jumper J1 is (on the manual AND in the photo) EXACTLY where it should be. (Yes, it's the right one for AGP video).

Methinks Hoko isn't reading the Manual...

There IS a PDF version of that document

http://www.motherboards.org/files/manuals/125/Florida-TG.pdf

Just in case Hoko doesn't have MS-Word/WordViewer. ;)

I did read the manual, that's how I knew it was the the J1 jumper. I just didn't know if the jumper was in the right position. Ok, since no one has commented on the BIOS settings I assume they are all correct?

1 - There will be a marking indicating which end Pin#1 is. Then (obviously) the others a in a row, Pin#2 and Pin#3. If in doubt, WITHOUT the Add-In Video card -AND- the OnBoard is functioning -THEN- you now know which one is Pin#1 (see Manual). ;)

2 - re - BIOS settings - Didn't I say there should be one or more Function Keys indicated in the BOTTOM of the Screen (or in the Main Screen) that tells "Setup Defaults" (preferred) and/or "BIOS Defaults"? This/these (basically) RESET it to "factory".

BIOS - let's step through them now that we know what they are.

---

*** This must be the Power Management Screen?

ACPI Aware O/S - No <--AFAICR, OK (Win95 no ACPI?)

Power Mgmt/APM - Enabled <--OK

Power Button - On/Off <--Hmmm, only options? or is there something else?

AC Power Default Status - Off <--OK - Prevent AutoOn if power cut off/unplugged then re-powered

Remote Power on LAN - Off <--OK - for Add-In Card Wake-On-Lan

Remote Power on Modem - Disabled <--OK - for Add-In Card Wake-On-Ring

Suspend Time Out - Disabled <--OK (Suspend-To-RAM?)

Parallel Port - Monitor <--Unsure

Floppy Disk - Monitor <--Unsure

Primary Master IDE - Monitor <--Unsure

PlugnPlay Aware O/S - Yes <--OK (Win95 is PnP BUT this causes BIOS to Assign IRQ etc.)

Initial Display Select - PCI Slot (PCI Slot, Onboard AGP) <---Umm... OK, but causes look at PCI Slot for Add-In Video first

PCI Latency Timer (PCI Clocks) - 64 (32, 64, 96, 128, 160, 192, 224, 248) <--Unsure

PCI VGA Palette Snoop - Disabled <--OK (never do this AFAIK)

Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA - Auto (auto, no) <-- OK, but irrelevant unless Add-In PCI Video

DMA Channel 0 - PnP (PnP, ISA) <--Unsure, but PnP should be fine (for Add-In cards?)

DMA Channel 1 - PnP " "

DMA Channel 3 - PnP " "

DMA Channel 5 - PnP " "

DMA Channel 6 - Pnp " "

Onboard Sound - Enabled (Enabled, Disabled) <--OK (the Cirrus Logic)

Onboard FDC - Auto (Auto, Disabled, Enabled) <--OK

Onboard Serial Port1 - Auto (Auto, Disabled, 3F8h, 2F8h, 3E8h, 2E8h) <--OK

Onboard Parallel Port - Auto (Auto, Didabled, 378, 278, 3BC <--OK

Parallel Port Mode - Both (Disabled, Primary, Secondary, Both) <--OK (ECP+EPP)

USB KB/Mouse Legacy Support - Enabled <--OK (for IF you use USB KB and/or Mouse)

Allocate IRQ to USB - Yes <--OK (absolutely!)

Memory Hole - Disabled <--OK (Absolutely!)

AGP Aperture Size - 64 mb <--OK

Hard Disk Boot Sector Virus Protection - Disabled <--OK (ABSOLUTELY or no Win95 Install)

Load Optimal Values <---Where is this at? THIS is one of them I had said to use...

--

Basically, you've given Screen Contents without telling which Sub-Menu they came from... Could you edit your last post and indicate?

HTH

edit - LoneCrusader confirms....

side note - I usually use the "Default"/"Optimal" (whatever) then go back and change whatever I need to.

 Thanks, I see it now ( d'oh! ). I missed that empty gold pin at the bottom of the jumper block ( so the jumper is on the upper two pins ).

P.S. and yes, my old eyes suck.

P.P.S. Oh, I didn't mean to criticize his camera skills, it's just a handy trick to know ( LED flashlight aiming at subject ). Often times you can then turn the flash completely off which results in no whiteout on reflective parts and usually means a longer shutter exposure as well. Better photo.

Tried using pause/break key during POST to bring up BIOS version. Command failed to do so, it merely paused the splash screen until I hit enter. But, dencorso has given us a DOS program that is supposed to retrieve BIOS version. FYI, to bring up the BIOS, I press DELETE repeatedly during the splash screen until the BIOS shows up.

Starting to come back to me...

SETUP

Standard Setup

Primary Master Hard Disk

Type: User <-- Can this be changed to "Auto"?

I don't see any "Boot Sequence" definitions? AFAICR, using the "Auto Detect IDE Devices" (when "Standard Setup" set to "Auto" if possible) allows the BIOS to look at the Device and set parameters accordingly. As for CD-ROM being listed, I can't actually remember, but I believe it needs to be or else the CD-ROM drivers need loaded in Win9x. It seems I remember that using the "Auto-Detect" that it wouldn't "stick" unless you Saved -AND- Exited. BTW, how do you "Save"/"Exit" - a Function Key(s) or a Screen Selection?

Would it be possible for you to press the "Pause" Key when you first turn on the PC or in the BIOS Setup Screen to get the BIOS Version/Identifier? It would help in determining a BIOS update. You may need that to support (e.g.) larger HDD or faster CPU.

Look here, scroll down to "Florida-TG" for "examples" of what you should see -

Notice to all - This info accurately provided will/may assist others with older eMachines (and maybe Gateways) in the future.

edit - AHA!!!! Confusion OVER!!!

Take THIS Link, insert into the NEXT link and set "From Language"="Korean" for translation! Voila! Your BIOS Settings!

I'm trying to get it into some kind of "stored" format now...
