How to Integrate Basic Updates/IE8/WMP11

===== GREAT BIG EDIT!!! =====

IE8 is (apparently) Directly able to slipstream with the LATEST nLite. It has been improved.

Please note that WMP11 is still safest (AFAIK) to slippstream with the WMP11 Slipstreamer

using the corresponding WMP11 EXE files.

The revised link to UDC is http://xdot.tk/

Will update this guide at first opportunity.

===========================

All Links and References are at the end of this post. Credits to the Maintainers and Creators of all the Links, Lists, and Tools to perform the Fully Up-To-Date XP x86 CD (NOT x64).

NOTICE! OnePiece’ Internet Explorer 8 Add-on Creator references have been removed! –X- has incorporated OnePiece’ IE8 Add-on Creator and all IE8 Hotfixes. This tutorial has been modified accordingly.

Edit: To clarify the end result of this procedure, it will COMPLETELY REPLACE WMP9 with WMP11 and COMPLETELY REPLACE IE6 with IE8 (Old Original Components are OVERLAYED with Replacement Components).

I have repeated many Links to Updates and Tools inside the Link References for the purpose of Common Reference. No DIRECT Links to Tools/Software are given as the DIRECT Links are provided within the Reference Links. Please notice the Difference between Updates and Upgrades. Updates (fixes) in this Tutorial apply to “What Is On The CD”. Upgrades are Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 11 which are NOT on the XP CD. XP Service Pack 3 contains IE6SP1 and WMP9 so this will be the HIGHEST level they will go. That is the purpose of this Tutorial. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher is ALSO an Optional Upgrade and is REQUIRED to perform this Tutorial. This tutorial does not address any other Optional Add-on’s (e.g. .Net Framework) including Non-Microsoft Add-ons.

Do these steps EXACTLY to properly Integrate Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 11. Failure to perform these steps TO THE LETTER will result in an unusable Slipstream.

Before we begin, I HIGHLY recommend the following (in case you didn’t know) -
* * Note: The “Folders” button allows for the Left/Right Pane View.
In Windows Explorer (at the Top),
1 – Select “View” and Click “Details”
2 – Select “Tools->Folder Options”
* General Tab - Click "Classic"
* View Tab Click the following
-- Display the contents of system folders - YES
-- Show hidden files and folders - YES
-- Hide extensions for known file types - NO
-- Hide protected operating system files - NO (Click OK)
3 - Click "Apply"
4 - Click "Apply to All Folders"
5 – Click “OK”

The above can be reset ANYTIME to Defaults as follows:
1 – Select “View” and Click “Thumbnails”
2 – Select “Tools->Folder Options”
* General Tab - Click "Show common tasks in folders"
* View Tab Click “Restore Defaults”
3 - Click "Apply"
4 - Click "Apply to All Folders"
5 – Click “OK”

NOTICE: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher to be installed prior to running the nLite and WMP11 Integrator (Slipstreamer) programs.

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 can be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

If it is not installed you will receive a "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)" or a ".NET Framework initialization error" upon launch of the programs.

I do NOT use the nLite Installer version in this Tutorial. If you use the nLite Installer, change the Folder Name specified in all places below as appropriate.

Additionally, I use ONLY "-X- Updates Downloader, Checker and Add-on Creator", hereafter referred to as "-X- UDC", which will include any references to the Linked Website's Footnote 1 (MediaPlayer).

Preparation (Note – do NOT do ANY of this FROM YOUR DESKTOP!) -
01 – Create the following Folders on ANY Partition –
* XPBEGIN <- Tools Software
* XPCD <- XP Integration Work Area
* XPNLITE <- nLite Installation Folder
* XPSP3 <- XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation EXE File
* XPUPDATE <- Main Work Folder (only Subfolders have contents)

This process will Download all Post-SP3 Updates and generate several Add-ons.
It will ALSO self-delete the files originally un-Zip’ed.
09 – MOVE (Cut) all "IE8*.*" files TO (Paste) Folder “XPUPDATE\IE8”

* WindowsXP-WindowsMedia-KBn-x86-ENU.cab

*** where "n" is the KB numbers
*** IOW, all -X- UDC "Footnote 1" Generated CAB Add-ons "*WindowsMedia*.*"

*** REVISION (new File added to UDC and is WMP Version-Specific and NOT a CAB):

* WindowsXP-WindowsMedia-KB2803821-x86-ENU.exe
11 – Double-Click “XPBEGIN\wmp11slips1.4i.exe” to Install (use Defaults)

If you are Brave Enough to use ANY OTHER nLite Options, browse the nLite SubForum for how to Integrate SATA/RAID Drivers, Other Drivers, Other Add-Ons (NOT what has already been listed), Unattended, Tweaks, etc. This Tutorial (as stated) is for NO MORE than a Basic Service Pack Integration, all Updates as specified by Microsoft Update (NO OPTIONALS) and as listed in –X- Updates Link, Internet Explorer 8 and associated Updates, and Windows Media Player 11 and associated Updates. It addresses NOTHING MORE!

Tip (in case you didn’t know) to check your Activation –
Start->Run->
and enter - %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe /a
A Window will appear and SHOULD say your Activated. If you are NOT Activated/Genuine, you will NOT be able to download the Windows Media Player 11 Installer!

You need to update these 2 sections...

03 – Download the following to folder "XPUPDATE\IE8"

* IE8-WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe

* IE8-WindowsXP-KB2510531-x86-ENU.exe

* IE8-WindowsXP-KB2797052-x86-ENU.exe

10 – MOVE (Cut) the following IE6 Updates TO (Paste) Folder "XPUPDATE\DONOTUSE"

* WindowsXP-KB2510581-x86-ENU.exe

* WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe

* WindowsXP-KB2797052-x86-ENU.exe

Feb changelog: - WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe and WindowsXP-KB2799329-x86-ENU.exe replaced by WindowsXP-KB2792100-x86-ENU.exe

@PinkFreud -

May be true, BUT (direct Copy/Paste of the Footnotes) -

*4 - If you're slipstreaming IE8, replace WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe with IE8-WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe.

*5 - If you're slipstreaming IE8, replace WindowsXP-KB2510581-x86-ENU.exe with IE8-WindowsXP-KB2510531-x86-ENU.exe.

*6 - If you're slipstreaming IE8, replace WindowsXP-KB2797052-x86-ENU.exe with IE8-WindowsXP-KB2797052-x86-ENU.exe.

An "error"? Seems like a "combo-fix", kind of like that stupid "Kernel-Mode" fix that I played bejeebus tracking down WTH MS did. :unsure: (Krap, Now I have to track down another booger...)

edit - KB2799329 was a post-Jan-Patch-Tuesday Update. I don't have it (used the Original UDC script before that was added).

BWAHAHAHAH! A "FixIt" provided. Betting it's a stupid REG entry!

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2799329

NOPE! FixIt is a "workaround" -

(sigh...) Replacement has "MSHTMLED.DLL" changed instead of "MSHTML.DLL". Here we go!

@!#$%^&!!!!!!! Looks like they were SITTING on KB2792100! Compared the two and INDEED they have changed (dates only?) for all BUT "MSHTML.DLL" (apparently).

So... what we're saying is that the -X- List for IE6->IE8 need changed for FootNote#4? Certainly APPEARS that way!!!! (Cumulative Update)

Old - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2761465

(KB2799392 came in here...)

New - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2792100

1 - "* Click “Build Date” to sort Oldest-To-Newest – IGNORE ADD-ON CAB DATES!"

2 - as you say, We only choose .exe files ?

I am breaking your question into two parts -

1 - Yes, I did - there are OTHER "CAB" files ("Add-ons") created OTHER than Windows Media Player, aren't there? They are created AT RUN TIME and WILL have Current Date and are totally UNRELATED to WMP11/IE8 and are therefore irrelevant to the procedure. See "Preparation Step#10"

WMP9 Add-on

2 - You are to Manually Download the Both the MediaPlayer-11 Installer -AND- ORIGINAL MediaPlayer "EXE" Updates! The Updates are "Multi-Version" (WMP9, WMP10, WMP11) and the CAB ones had the WMP10/WMP11files and code STRIPPED and are USELESS for the WMP11. The CAB Add-on's are designed SPECIFICALLY for WMP9 and must be REMOVED if you are Integrating WMP11. In addition, the "WMP11 Slipstreamer" doesn't use Add-on's (AFAIK) but rather the ORIGINAL ones! nLite does NOT INTEGRATE the Originals (or WMP10/WMP11 Installer) properly BECAUSE they are "Multi-Version".

I prefer to not further explain any rationale of the procedure or idiosyncrasies of nLite.

This would be a repeat of information elsewhere on MSFN and is inappropriate for this TUTORIAL.

It is akin to asking "Why do I glue the propeller onto the front of the model airplane?" - Irrelevant to the Instructions. :yes:

Please bear in mind this Tutorial is for BOTH WMP11 and IE8 and NOTHING ELSE as I had stated. Doing EITHER (not BOTH) is up to you to and you may alter the instructions accordingly. Bluntly, use the instructions exactly and tell me if it worked. Do not do anything other than that. If you do, open a topic referencing the "additional" things you did. I do not address them here.

The instructions are not complicated. They are simply lengthy and detailed. "Do it and it works". ;)

Here is my repack of WMP11 installer for the slipstreamer, umdf.exe has been updated with KB970159

For anyone finding this post, it does go somewhat beyond the scope of the tutorial. HOWEVER, this is a legitimate (and little known) Update and the Repack is correct and only replaces the file with the "Update" file. Please note that it is not an "Official" MS WMP11 Installation but will react (e.g. your OS must be Genuine) as the Original does (the single file inside ONLY has been updated).

If you so desire, you may use this file instead of the "wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe" BUT (a VERY big but) be aware that it MUST be chosen for Integration BEFORE the OTHER WMP11 "EXE" Update Files as the File Date will NOT follow the Tutorial Rules laid out per "sorting/selecting".

note - don't bother looking for the "replacement" file - it's name is not what you think and it's "rare" to be found.

My GOD!

I'm a dumbas*!

I don't understand a half of the first post.

I only want to REPLACE IE6 with IE8.

I don't want to see the trace of IE6 like it never existed on XP.

Is that possible???
