Display Chinese Characters on Windows XP ?

what do I set to enable these?

I want to remove all pretty much all languages and keyboards other than English but I still want to be able to display foreign characters like Chinese without just showing question marks and stuff.

where is the setting in nlite to do this?

great and where do I get this "simhei font" you speak of?

is it normally included on the windows xp disk?

I am trying to make sure my nlite setup of xp installs this automatically.. since normally windows xp will see these fonts.

Yes it is. Don't remove it.

Long answer: There are 4 fonts included in Windows XP disk that are used to display Chinese characters.

MingLiU / PMingLiU (for Traditional Chinese)

DFKai-SB (for Traditional Chinese; DFKai-SB is present only in Chinese Taiwan version of WinXP)

SimSun (for Simplified Chinese)

SimHei (for Simplified Chinese)

If you want to support Chinese characters, you shouldn't remove these fonts.

EDIT: Here are more fonts. These are for Han Characters in Japanese and Korean.

Batang / Gungsuh (for Korean)

Gulim / Dotum (for Korean)

MS Gothic (for Japanese)

MS Mincho (for Japanese)

So, which one do you like? When you are speaking of Chinese characters you should say which Chinese you are referring to.

I guess what is confusing me is that I was not aware that I was removing it.

is there a check box in nlite that does this? perhaps I selected it unintentionally.

my issue while I don't speak Chinese, Korean Japanese etc.... I do still want the characters to be displayed.

would this be under keyboards? languages or somewhere else?

under the language and keyboard sections there are a lot quite a few listed which ones can I safely remove without diminishing my operating system's ability to display said characters?

see the picture to see what I mean.

@KapnJackSparrow

So you meant Han characters (or CJK unified ideographs) in general, didn't you?

I didn't use nLite to remove components so I cannot give you detailed instructions. But I can say that if you keep at least one East Asian language (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) installed. The Chinese characters will be displayed properly.

In XP those three languages are tied with one another and you can't remove them separately, ex. if you decide to keep Japanese then nLite will also not remove the two others (it's different in 2K where you can remove them one by one).

@KapnJackSparrow

Is there any practical reason why you want to remove the languages? It doesn't really cause any harm to just keep them all unless it's a computer with a very small HDD.

ok well that's interesting.

I am unsure of what check box is responsible for removing them

if the check box is under keyboards or languages or both?

I am trying to take away anything I can get away with in the hopes of making a fully functional bare bones installation. As the for size I have more than enough space for 50 windows xp installations should I desire to do so.
