Microsoft removing XP downloads

If we don't get them now, they will be lost forever. They are forcing everyone to upgrade.

Someone should start downloading XP/2003 updates and back them up somewhere like I've been doing with Win2k related files.

Microsoft has officially stated that they will support Windows XP SP3 (with updates through Windows Update) until April 2014, so they can't remove the relevant updates, can they? Still the updates are already so many that they should release one more service pack (which ofcourse isn't going to happen).

This is a bad move from Micro$oft.

I think that there will be a class action, or a lawsuit, because Windows XP is still supported until that date.

Someone at Micro$oft should get fired.

Yes, they can

Theoretically they only have to provide security fixes which means that all non-security stuff which is still available for XP can be either removed or the access to it can be restricted only to those who paid for it.

I downloaded the entire MS download center from 1995 to 2006 some years back. Still have to download from 2006 to current. :thumbup

Did you download only ENU files or does your archive cover all languages?

I have found an EXTREMELY easy way to download single updates in all supported languages.

1) Create a text file, ex. "download.txt" and put this in it:

http://www.microsoft.com/zh-cn/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/zh-tw/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/cs-cz/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/da-dk/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/nl-nl/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/fi-fi/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/de-de/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/el-gr/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/hu-hu/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/it-it/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/ja-jp/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/ko-kr/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/nb-no/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/pl-pl/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/pt-br/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/pt-pt/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/es-es/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/sv-se/download/confirmation.aspx?id=
http://www.microsoft.com/tr-tr/download/confirmation.aspx?id=

2) Create a CMD file, ex. "download.cmd" and put this in it:

SET KBNUM=9110
SET BROWSERPATH=D:\Programy\Firefox\Firefox.exe

FOR /F "tokens=* delims=" %%I IN (download.txt) DO "%BROWSERPATH%" %%I%KBNUM%

You should change the KBNUM and BROWSERPATH values according to the downloaded update and the browser you're using.

3) Run the script (download.cmd). It will automatically open the links in the browser and you will be able to easily download all of them.

4) In order to get the KBNUM you just need to open the main page of each update, ex. for KB952954 it is:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9110

In this case the number will be "9110".

Limitations: ARA, HEB and JPN-NEC updates cannot be downloaded in this way.

Edit: Update!

Many of the removed updates seem to be still available to download from MS Update Catalog! The website is IE-only and the download speed is not very fast but at least it does work!

Also the Catalog seems to be the only option to download Win2k updates (not only the removed ones but all updates) for Japanese NEC98. You can't access them from the public M$ site because even if you select JPN (NEC) the site will still link you to the x86 version of the update.

I think that the quote about non security hotfixes reffers to hotfixes that are released after the time of the mainstream support phase has ended.
