Unofficial SP 5.2 for Microsoft Windows 2000 (WIP)

@sonyu Sorry for a late reply. The website hasn't been updated for a while. You'll probably need to install the newest daily release of UURollup in order to run SRWare Iron. It still won't work correctly though due to the Javascript bug so you'd better just use Firefox if you need an updated and widely supported browser.

I've just uploaded a new daily release of UURollup-v11. All new files from BWC kernel are included in it (support for 32GB of RAM, etc.).

Several additional Chinese and Korean font files are also installed by this release. They aren't going to be installed by default in the final USP5.2 package but at the moment I've got no time to work on them so I've just decided to install all of them together with the other fonts.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm sorry for being a little bit inactive recently but I've been very busy :( I'm still trying to spend as much time as possible on Windows related projects.

You can expect a new version of my website this weekend. There are a lot of improvements but probably the most important one is related to the HFSLIP Updates List available here (still the old version at the moment). The list is now going to be much more accessible and customisable, and also viewable on different screen resolutions (even small phone screens).

This updates list is actually the most important thing for me. In fact, I wouldn't be able to do anything without it. The reason is that in order to create any unofficial updates package you need to know which official updates and hotfixes are still valid, what files they update, etc. This information provided by the updates list is critical for creating packages like the USP5 or UURollup.

Anyway, here you can see a screen shot of the upcoming update:

The desktop version may look similar at first sight but the whole site has been rewritten from scratch. It's slimmer, faster and easier to read due to improved colour scheme and larger fonts.

The biggest difference can be seen when it comes to smaller resolutions where the old one was completely inaccessible.

It's probably pretty late in the game to be bringing this up but since I was forced to reinstall Windows 2000, I tried out the UURollup-v11 daily from Sept 02, 2013 and when the login is ready to come up, it hangs on preparing network connections and then NT Authority comes up saying it will shut down my system. I can log in via Safe Mode but not in regular mode. Any ideas as to why this happens? The older UURollup from March works fine but it seems like June and September's causes my machine to force a restart all the time and will not let me login at all unless I'm in safe mode.

Hello everyone,

Firstly, I'd like to thank Tomasz86, Blackwingcat and all the gurus for doing this. It is hard to describe the feeling I got when M$ decided to cut w2k support back in 2005 by not issuing new (and deserved) Service Pack. Windows 2000 deserves the attention you are paying by this astonishing work and you literally took away the sadness.

I found this forum only recently, because my issue was a bit simple: I needed a VM on 1GB 5-year old Thinkpad X61 running Debian Wheezy, which would be capable of running Office 2007 because of upcoming company event requiring 100% visual of presented office documents. So I came around this forum (and 2 other sources) and voila! Office 2007 up and running with Slovak proofing tools and SP3 on a 160MB Win2k VM all thanks to you. My hat is going way dwon.

As you might have found out by now, a soul of a man is always hungry for more if the information relate to any object of their interest, so maybe I am asking something already mentioned elsewhere and being too lame to google it (I tired, but didn't find any usable answer), but would like to address following issues, as now I try to create a super install cd of win2k:

1. As USP5.2 is still not ready, I found myself spying on all Windows2000 updates and hotfixes I could manage to find. I know about USP5.1, UR2 and UUR. However, it is not clear or mentioned anywhere, what should I install to this date (end of September, 2013), furthermore, I cannot find any list of hotfixes included in UURs, or USP5.1. I found some FDV file list on MSFN, but it seems to me a bit old. Then I found a list of hotfixes included in USP5.1 posted by tomasz86. However, it was said there are about 400-some updates and only about 140 in the list (therefore the list is not complete). I don't know how to assign hotfix numbers to their md5 equivalents. I even used coloured highlighters and printed lists, but hsflip installation didn't end up well (setup.exe error after product key). I found (hopefully) a complete list of updates included in UR2. Still, there were some hotfixes and updates in hfslip-preset folders downloadable from windows2000.tk archive. To make things more complicated, I found another guide to make an up-to-date windows 2000 CD by Kurt_Aust. I tried his guide, even modifying the RunOnce stage a bit and everything worked fine, except it seems to be a bit old, as Office 2007 setup ended with an error stating it could not find some .ini file directly under its nose. I am experienced with nLite, but mostly with Windows XP, as I find them the least painful solution for VMs these days (I removed nearly everything I could for the basic office work). But as I say I like my lightweight XP, I just loved Win2k for being versatile and serious platform for testing (VPNs, older Office packages, etc.), while having nearly no hw requirements compared to XP (128-256MB ram was always feasible on a 2GB machine and the system ran smoothly). Well, it was so until the support was dropped completely in 2010 (yes, I used to wait for all those updates to install automatically). I never tried hfslip until a day or two ago. I also downloaded the file checker, but its date is way back in 2012 even it helped me sort out some obsolete updates.

Is there any list of what to install/integrate on/to SP4-slipstreamed (original SP4 pressed CD) Win2k image to make the system totally updated? The combination: USP5.1 + UR2 + UUR11 2013/09/02 worked perfectly. I found the hfslip list on windows2000.tk site a little misleadin as it does not count in USP, UR2 or UUR. Are there any additional updates/hotfixes? Perhaps one of those listed by Kurt_Aust for .NET and optional components? I didn't try .NET or Silverlight (actually I didn't merge it with Kurt_Aust RunOnce procedure, as I installed all these 3 updates manually on an existing Win2k VM in order to make Office working ASAP. UURv11 daily had to be installed from Safe Mode as it generated an error that shell32.dll was being used).

2. I would like to modify and slipstream my customised boot logo onto the installation image. I tried expanding I386\ntoskrnl.ex_ , replacing the orignal logo and compressing it back. The installation showed customised logo for the first time when graphical portion of setup started, but after this portion, the original one showed up, like I didn't do anything (the runonce procedure didn't even start by the time the logo was back to original). I guess this ntoskrnl.ex_ file is used for setup.exe only. I noticed that BWC's kernel has customised logo and decided to slipstream all the necessary service packs, rollups and updates using hfslip, use nLite afterwards to remove unnecessary things, add RunOnce files and then change the logo. Which file is the "right" ntoskrnl.exe that has to be changed in order for the logo to display correctly after the setup is complete?

3. Regarding the website www.windows2000.tk, namely the SP4 hfslip section. I don't know if it is normal but I am not able to download any unofficial update. Official ones are a matter of M$ attitude, so I requested some of them by e-mail, as that was the only option. However, probably thanks to megaupload affair, nearly all the files vanished from mediafire, and therefore I am cut off the source. I was mainly interestedn in unofficial KBz... updates having numbers starting with 2 (possibly the newest ones) and I was not able to download them. Are there integrated in UUR v11 or is there any alternative source?

Just FYI, I am completely OK with English versions of all programs I use according to the fact that Slovak translation of M$ (but also other) programs is literally a nightmare. If you used them, you wouldn't be even able to find features you know if you had used English (or other) versions before. the only thing I need is the proofing dictionary for Office, which installs fine.

Thank you very much for your answers.

I'm able to get the Standard Edition of Office 2007 fully functional on Windows 2000 as long as you slipstream Tomaz86's HF_SLIP compilation and a later version of UURollup, all I had to do was use Blackwingcat's KDW wrapper and set Office's setup.exe file to Windows XP compatibility and setup completes without a hitch. I can't say about any other version or in any other language though. And I believe the HF_SLIP compilation does have all the updates and even one of the very early UURollup packs, but I do know it has USP5.1 and Update Rollup 2 along with IE6 and DirectX 9.

I also finally got an answer to my own question. It seems that I cannot make a hop skip and a jump to the June or September 2013 UURollup v11 without installing at least the weekly UURollup v11 March 2013 first, once I do that then I can install the daily June or Sept version and there's no problem at all. However, my trick to fix the audio issue no longer works with the later version so we need to find a fix for it. As I mentioned a long time ago, if you install a sound driver AFTER you install UURollup v11, the audio service is literally non-existent. I used to be able reinstall that UURollup v11 without uninstalling it first but now it doesn't work. In fact it seems that it doesn't really do anything anymore if it detects the same file versions in tact which I believe it didn't matter in the beginning of the year that it just installed a whole new copy of itself and then the audio service started working. Other than that, I haven't found anything that works to get the audio service running after you install a new audio driver.

Thank you for your answer. There was no problem running Office 2007 using Chrome tool, but I will definitely try to use Application Compatibility Tool as soon as I manage to create an up-to-date compilation. Thank you also for the hfslip compilation hint. It is rather confusing to find 3 different hotfix lists of HF folders held by some people and try to make the best of it. However, I was thinking the UURs contain all up-to-date updates and hotfixes, but wasn't sure, though.

Well, as far as audio is concerned, I can test only audio driver that comes with Vmware tools / Virtualbox Guest additions package as I have no physical system currently usable for the purpose of installing Windows 2000 to. Therefore I don't have any comprehensible knowledge within this field.

I will post the output of HF file checker soon. Mainly missing / not found section was very interesting. I understand this tool is not capable of sorting out USP, UR2 or UUR packages (and remove related hotfixes from the list), so that's what I'm trying to find out - if any / all / none hotfixes listed as missing or not found, are included in any of the rollups.

I'm writing from my phone while being on a train now so I'll try to keep this short.

First of all, when it comes to my website, there's a delay (as usually :}) as I didn't manage to finish the updated version last weekend, but I'm determined to finish and upload it in the next few days.

@Tommy Glad that you've solved the problem with UURollup. I really haven't got time to properly test it now. The only thing I can guarantee is that I'm going to keep updating it following the new versions of the BWC kernel.

@lostrail Thank you for your interest and support for the Windows 2000 related projects.

1. The HFSLIP Updates List hasn't been updated for a while but I'm working on it right now so please wait for just a few days. You're right that a lot of links to the unofficial updates listed there don't work but you shouldn't worry too much as almost all of them are indeed included in UURollup :) As Tommy has mentioned before, try to download my HFSLIP package which covers almost all of Windows 2000 official and unofficial updates (except a few recent ones and NET Framework which you'll have to install separately). The package uses an older release of UURollup though so you should replace it with the newest one.

You also mentioned the Kurt_Aust guide, and while I do think it's very good, it's focused only on official updates and doesn't take into account the unofficial ones so I wouldn't recommend it in your case.

2. When it comes to replacing the boot logo, the best way would be to modify all four kernel files.

That's all I can say now. I'll try to give more details later this week.

@tomasz86 Thank you for a bit of clarification. I decided to merge ideas of Kurt_Aust and yours to create a hybrid, updated installation image, as it is now obvious his original guide is a bit outdated and I am definitely interested in all that unofficial stuff (the "product" will be used for VM purposes only, so I have a plenty of space to play). The steps will be following:

1. Slipstream USP5.1, UR2, UUR11 3/2013, WMP, XML and other tools included within prepared folder with HFSLIP

2. Use nLite to remove unnecessary components, tweak it up a little and unattend the installation process

3. Inspect the possibility of utilising T-13 stage as I did successfully before with XP ($OEM$ directory structure). Hopefully UURv11 daily 2013/09/02 can be installed at this stage, but I didn't dig into this too much yet, maybe you could say if it is possible. If not, it will be quite a hard time to find the right place and time for it in the RunOnce batch file

4. Reviewing and editing Kurt_Aust's RunOnce batch files, removing obsolete hotfixes, programs and functions (mainly those already slipstreamed with HFSLIP), adding something of my interest (e.g. IrfanView, registry entries for explorer details view, etc.)

5. Try it and tune up the details

Regarding the logo: just to be sure - the fantastic four is: ntoskrnl.exe, ntdll.dll, kernel32.dll and hal.dll? Or, when talking about I386 directory, their underscored eqiuvalents (ex_, dl_)? Never gone so deep into the very heart of a Windows OS.

Can I use Kurt_Aust's automated RunOnce batch procedures for Silverlight and possibly .NET? I read something about a superinstallation package of yours regarding .NET, but wasn't able to download it. Is there any living link? Can the setup be automated/unattended?

Can the RunOnce process be secured, or better said, can it be made retard-proof? I mean blocking all controls and keyboard shortcuts, which could interrupt or cancel it. Mainly the second automatic logon loads also explorer.exe and everything is accessible while the setup process still goes on. Even during the first logon, there is a possibility to close the cmd window. I think I can handle particular setup programs, but not this. I'm just curious.

Thank you for your answers. I will wait those couple of days for the new HFSLIP "bundle".
