Building new system (Windows 2000 compatible)

WinWin

Recommended Posts

I know it's a long shot, but I'm looking to upgrade my old single-core box with something a bit better and I know Win2k support has fallen short. Hopefully this forum has enough diehard Win2k enthusiasts that know a little bit more than me about this. Right now, my main hangup is finding a motherboard that will be suitable. I know something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131736 (While totally awesome) may not work right. I know there's specific chipset drivers for different boards and some XP drivers work with 2k, and others do if you do some tweaking. I think I can get a quadcore working well with blackwingcat's cpu limiter removal tweak. Also, I'm using a Quadro FX graphics card because they still have Win2k drivers, but maybe there's a way to get some of the faster, more modern ones working. Anyways, I'm looking for advice if anybody here is experienced enough to lend any.

From my experience I can say that most XP drivers will not work in Windows 2000 so you should check if there're W2K compatible drivers before buying anything. Actually, the motherboard you're linking to will probably work with BWC drivers:

One problem with BWC's cpu limiter patch is that you'll lose it if you install WB kernel as WB kernel has newer versions of the files concerned.

I'm not sure if SATA3 works with BWC drivers (but should...). USB3.0 is likely not to work.

Thanks for the info. I have used blackwingcat's kernelex: and that's helped with many programs. It doesn't actually replace the kernel so could this really impact cpu hack? Maybe if I installed server or advanced server? Also, with the sata3, would that mean issues for using older sata 2 and 1 drives? It can boot (without OS) I'm sure so I don't see where the driver is mandatory to making it work after loading the OS. Your thoughts?

That just leaves a video card. I was hoping for something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121623

Has anybody had any success with Radeon HD 7xxxx or even 6xxxx?

BWC's KDW won't have any effect on the cpu limiter patch :)

You may want to try a combo of UURollup (Global) + BWC Kernel as doing so will bring almost all unofficial updates together with the kernel to you, and you will still be able to use the cpu patch.

As for SATA3 I'm just not sure if the drivers work for the chipset. You'll probably have to test all the different versions available on the BWC's blog (as I had to do) to find a working one. Mine is AMD A55 chipset and the working driver is the one listed as "for SB700/SB800".

BIG FAT EDIT:

Forget what I said before................

For my next 2000 workstation I plan on

these. [after four days of research.]

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138293&Tpk=N68S

http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=498

I just found out by going to VideoLAN.org 's site that I only need to add that

"libdvdcss" thing in Linux, the Windows version of VLC already has it, so that takes care of

playing dvds on a workstation.

I already tried it on this old 2008 era P4 single core and it looked fine, except for a little

jerkiness, at the beginning of STAR TREK (2009) I was surprised, I had always played

DVDs through the MDP-130, now I don't have to worry.

As stated in the reviews, the chipset is a little older but that works out fine for us,

nVidia has an on-line app that fits you with the best drivers for your application.

Better than Biostar's does, though go to the driver's tab in the page link above and you'll

see a 2000 compatible driver for the USB 2.0 that may or may not be newer than the one on the

driver CD.

As for Tomasz's Rollup I have full confidence in it, as I did have it working for the latest version

[2.0.1] of VLC, then I buggered my installation of MyHD somehow, and after not working for fourty

days, we're inundated with ships now coming through the St.Lawrence Seaway, so I haven't

had time to repeat.

So as for this mobo, I plan on ordering 3 or 4 with the 45 Watt Sempron 130's for PVR use,

and one with a dual or maybe even quad [and re-read what Syclone0044 did to get his

quad running] all for the price of one of those expensive industrial boards.

Then one without a cpu as a backup.

I mean one place wanted 375, the other 450 $.

I'd recommend a board with an LGA 775. You can get a Core 2 Duo with a G31/G33 or even G41/43 chipset and use integrated graphics.

The drivers work on Windows 2000, at least for the ASUS boards. I'm getting one for my main Win2K box.

I'm a happy user of LGA 775 and P45. My E8600 Cpu is about as fast as any recent one on my single-task applications.

Though, WinWin seems to want more cores, for which today's sockets are better.

Checked recently that Intel's Panther Point (= 7 series) chipset, meant for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge, is to accept the InfInst 9.3.0.1019.

This InfInst (obtained at Gigabyte for a P75 chipset and Xp, 1.2MB) seems to accept W2k officially:

- Its Readme tells W2k

- Its PantUsb3.cat tells 2:5.00 - obsolete, which I understand W2k is accepted (2:5.1 begin at Xp and so on)

- It does offer Usb 3.0 which would then run with W2k officially.

- So only the Ahci and Raid would need an adapted driver - BWC of course.

- Maybe Intel's Flash cache doesn't work, but who cares if you have an SSD.

Did you try it, or have a better rationale?
