HTPC & GAMING PC

Hi guys i need your expertise opinion on building my new Workstation, this would be used for Media Server, HTPC and for my Gaming, this will be sharing to 3 more pc, 1 laptop and 3 external RDP users. So they will be accessing all videos, Quickbooks, music, office files. This server i would prefer not to power off at nights, should run 24/7s. now i would like to play any Games on this machine, do graphic or video editing, rendering, etc. Now my most important question is, will i be making the right choice to run my games on this Asus P8B WS with Xeon E3-1245 and ECC memory, why am using these is because of more stability, tired of windows crashing but with enough power to do all i need. S will the server mb with xeon cpu and ecc memory hinder me from playing games?

1) am at a $1500 budget

2) this must be a reliable and Beefy Machine for my jobs to be done,

3) especially when am out of town & need files from my pc or do my personal accounting with quickbooks

4) check the status on my video being rendered and not crash before completion

5) as i've said my 2 kids are streaming media from that main pc via NComputing L300, along my wife (NComputing L300) plus my personal Laptop

6) my wife does accounting from home, so she may need access to other files when she's at a client or on the road.

7) we watch Bluray movies on our 42"

8) plus we play massive Gaming on Sundays on our 32"

“why am using these is because of more stability, tired of windows crashing but with enough power to do all i need”.

Ecc ram won’t help you to face hazardous OS installation, unstable o/c settings and drivers.

Asus P8B WS is design for entry level workstations and servers with sas ability (SASsaby) on 206 chipset.

As many other Mobos it supports up to 32 Go ram. Considering the lower and affordable price at 1333 MHz, why don't you start with 16 Go? 4 slots filled with 4 Go each.

If one piece crashes, you have still two others working in Dual channel. You just need to take out the crashed one and its opposite and you can till work with 8 Go.

Gamers usually prefer higher ram frequencies, above 1866 MHz. JEDEC hasn't validate more than 1600 MHz. But ecc quality at 1600 MHz is a completely other money form factor...

For higher fps in games it is better to take higher frequencies, latency is secondary. That means heat, fans, noise... (HTPC requires silent) and losing warranty.

E3-xxx5 series has iGPU that is equal to FX 580. Only 32 CUDA Cores.

If you take the EVGA 02G-P3-1469-RX with 336 CC, you probably don't need iGPU. But a higher bandwidth avoiding NOPs. 16 Go ram do fine.

Considering quality, a warranty of 5 years for SSDs with professional support and tools is fine. Commonly 120 Go SSDs are given for a workload of 30 Go writes a day.

Same for PSU, P8B WS needs just ATX V2 and above. If you” prefer not to power off at nights, should run 24/7s”, a PSU with 24/7 and at least 3 years warranty would be a good choice.

650 W means 1000 VA power protection (VA=W/0.66, as a general rule of thumb). If you are not going to o/c, you probably not need that much power (electricity bill).

With 16 Go ram, you have about 16 Go pagefile and 12 Go of hiberfil. That means that you will start with 111,6 GO on a 128 Go SSD after formatting.

Once installed, win7@64 will take about 40 Go (incl. hiber and pagefile). 71 Go left!

At 24/7 you will turn off hiberfil.sys and recover those 12 Go, so 83 Go left.

At least, the old fashioned Noctua NH-C12P SE14 works great for both, CPU and low profiled ram.

Coming soon, without ecc compatibility: Asus P8Z77 WS.

This could be a better choice considering cooling, ram frequencies and connectivity.

Are you sure about the 206 chipset of the P8B ws?

Hoping this helps!

System :

P8B WS, E3-1275, 16 Go ecc ram (KVR1333D3E9S/4G), quadro 600, SSD KC100/120 Go and Seasonic S12II 430 Bronze.

A pagefile is probably not needed so you can disable that as well. When the PC starts to complain it is better to put in more RAM. This also will give you a more stable system.

That motherboard is out, about 350USD, and it's interesting to see how VIRTU works on the Z77 chipset.

Still, I would build a server and a personal work/gaming PC, not 3 things like server/work/gaming, that is just asking for trouble... Or/and ditch the Ncomputing office/kiosk stuff.
