Windows 8 - Deeper Impressions

This whole thing about needing an Internet connection to play a game is ridiculous on its face. Why would you have to be online in order to play a game, any more than you have to be online in order to read a book??

Yeah, yeah, we know all about e-readers. At this point it wouldn't surprise me if, before long, we were required to be online even to read a d*mn book. But the point about e-readers doesn't address the issue, which is -- why would anybody consider such a connection necessary? And, more critically, why would any customer want to do it this way?

The only reasonable scenario for a computer game needing to be online is for multiplayer games. (Although even that wouldn't be so for games played by small groups in the same building.) Anything beyond that is a gratuitous burden.

Awareness (and the effects) of lackluster Windows 8 sales are starting to spill over into the wider world:

Bank of America thinks Windows 8 'lacks momentum' and challenges optimism

Bank of America, a multinational banking and financial services company, has downgraded their stock in Microsoft and they are blaming a "lack of momentum" as the reason...
"We were hoping that MSFT would make a bold foray with Win 8 into smartphones and tablets. Conventional product cycle wisdom dictates that the stock should peak before a Win launch (it hit $31.45 in Sept '12 before Win 8), but we remained optimistic because the limited availability of touch-based devices impaired an objective assessment of Win 8. Now, six months post launch, despite more available touch-based devices, Win 8 lacks momentum, challenging our optimism," Ragan stated.

As a result, BoA has downgraded their recommendation for Microsoft stock from "Buy" to "Neutral." Notice how they have no time for MS/Thurrott-type excuses for the poor sales performance of the company's products.

That "conventional wisdom," BTW, is very similar to what my historical stock research had indicated and I'd intended to buy MSFT in late summer shortly before launch. Good thing that my incurable procrastination took over and I never got around to making the purchase.

Windows XP deadline leads to new Windows 8 price cut for businesses

As we mentioned earlier today, we are just one year away from Microsoft ending its official support for Windows XP. While the OS launched over 11 years ago, a large number of businesses still use Windows XP and have not upgraded their systems to Windows 7 or 8.

Today, as expected, Microsoft sent out a press release that basically says it will be sticking to its April 8th, 2014 date for ending Windows XP support. Erwin Visser, general manager, Windows Commercial, is quoted as saying, ".... those that haven’t yet started their migration process need to begin as soon as possible to ensure that they meet the April 8, 2014, deadline."

Microsoft has also launched a new program for small and medium size businesses to make it easier for them to update to Windows 8. The Windows for Business blog reports that Microsoft will give those businesses which still have Windows XP installed a 15 percent discount on buying both Windows 8 Pro as well as Office 2013 Standard (Office 2003 support will also end one year from now). The discount ends for those outlets on June 30th and is available for up to 100 licenses each of Windows 8 Pro and Office 2013 Standard.

This must be the first time in computing history that switching from a 12 year old OS to the new one is a downgrade.

Get lost! They just don't get it. Even if metro would be truly better (ha!), calling it "modern" is insulting to customers. You're p***ing off the people who user your older system, adding one additional barrier to W8 adoption.

Microsoft's sales abilities are as awesome as Al Bundy's in his shoe shop.

Metrotards once again invert the rules of the market:

Stay with 7 and in 15 years we're having an identical post to this except replace XP with 7.

Thank you all blind idiotic Win8 haters for giving us ANOTHER 15 years with the same freaking OS.

How about thank you Microsoft for making a product no one wanted? I don't know for sure, but as far as I know this poster is in bed with MS (I think I've read a post where he admitted working for them). If true, that's how the prevalent thinking is there apparently. They seem to be genuinely clueless about their own product and why one product is a success and another is not.

Another gem from the same poster:

Windows XP is even today still a good basic OS. It was top of the line advanced when it was released. Windows 7 appears still a very good OS, but not in 10 years anymore. It already looks dated compared to Windows 8.

These tards sure know how to instill aggressive feelings. I think the CIA should hire them as torture specialists. If they are this grating on the nerves over the internet, just imagine what wonders they could do in person!

Dot Matrix, the chief torture master (apparently in bed, too) weighs in:

Microsoft should release an update that causes any remaining XP machines to spontaneously combust. That'll get people to upgrade.

Personally, I stopped supporting XP a year or so ago. Anyone coming to me with an XP machine has been greeted with, "Would you be interested in exploring and upgrading to Windows 8?"

Would you be interested in making love to it, too?

Only someone who has personally seen a MS paycheck would write something like this. It's so over the top that I would not even consider it shilling anymore, they could as well wear a huge hat with a huge "I GET PAID FOR THIS"-sign on.

ROFLCOPTER, Dot Matrix would rather loss his job than using XP:

That's what my employer says, XP ain't going anywhere but on our computers.
You're kidding, right? I'd be searching for a new job if my employer said that.

I wonder whether his superiors know what he's doing? I don't think they have approved him to appear as a complete nutter. Only a matter of time before he claims to have a erotic relationship with his W8 DVD.

Every time I brought my car for servicing to the same car dealer I bought it from I was greeted similarly:

Have you seen the new model?

Do you want a test drive?

It has a number of improvements, and with the offer (ending next week) it's a steal.

If you wait more time before selling your car you won't get much from it, it's already 2 years old, after the third year it won't have any market.

Since warranty expired I have it serviced by a local ("authorized" BTW) workshop, that NEVER suggested that I should change my car.

I wonder WHY exactly people making repairs tend NOT to suggest to buy new cars, whilst car dealers do :angel .

Besides that I would like to know a few "customers" to which Dot Matrix tried to place the new Windows 8 (only to know if they are still among his customers).

 Thanks for the laughs, @Formfiller. :)

I've never understood how being "new" constitutes a reason for buying a product, much less for heaping scorn on those who aren't interested. The pencils I write with look exactly the same as the ones I used back when I was in elementary school, and they work just as well. Anybody who would criticize me for using them (instead of some newfangled thingy) would go right into my "kook" slot. Their line of argument would be merely irrelevant, but it's their inappropriately hostile attitude that would get them classified as nutjobs.

Ditto for Win8tards.

And that "looks dated" pseudo-argument. I don't give a rat's *ss whether it looks "new" or "dated." What does that mean, anyway, and what does it really matter? I can understand it if someone makes objectively measurable comparisons, such as "A looks sharper than B because there are more pixels per square inch" or something along those lines. I can also understand if someone claims that A looks uglier than B, or prettier, or in some other way more (or less) esthetically pleasing to them. De gustibus non est disputandum. But "modern"? "Dated"?? These are almost completely meaningless terms, and those who use them prove nothing other than their lack of independent judgment, blindly following the trends that others propose. So A "was in use 10 years ago," and B "just came out." And...?

We've seen how MSFT is seeking to milk more $$$ out of its customers by turning Office into a subscription service, and making the purchase of a license so expensive that many customers will opt for the subscription. Here's another way to shear extra $$$ from the sheep:

If you break your Surface RT/Pro kickstand, you will have to purchase a new Surface device

Just recently, we wrote a piece on the Surface Pro's component replacement costs. "Do you own a Microsoft Surface Pro? Well, if you do, try not to blow out the battery or damage your screen, because the chances of you getting a replacement component will cost you an arm and a leg. You might as well purchase another Surface device," we wrote.

Well, unfortunately, this also applies to the kickstand. A question was asked on the Microsoft Surface support forum about the possibility of obtaining a replacement kickstand for one that had snapped off its hinges. "In this case, I believe you will need to replace the entire device rather than just the kickstand itself. My apologies for the inconvenience," was the answer given.

To borrow @jaclaz's automotive analogy, this is like saying that if you break a door hinge, or if the windshield cracks, or if the battery dies, then you will need to purchase a whole new car.

I've never understood how being "new" constitutes a reason for buying a product, much less for heaping scorn on those who aren't interested.

I feel it stems from a kind of false equivocation: technology improves over time therefore each new technology is an improvement. While innovation and experimentation should be encouraged, failure should also be allowed, and there should be a realization that some attempts will be regressions. As time passes, the failures are less remembered than the successes thus giving the appearance of an uninterrupted string of improvements. After enough time, people start forgetting what has failed before and attempt to reintroduce bad concepts. As an example, just look at how many people are talking about full screen apps, single-tasking, and rote memorization of complex actions as innovations. We spent years trying to free ourselves of this. Even worse, Microsoft was once a primary innovator away from these computing concepts.

ROFLCOPTER, Dot Matrix would rather loss his job than using XP:

That is one classic astro-turfer right there. Such a blatant obvious case of posting for money or points or whatever arrangement Microsoft has with these people.

It is simple math. The little Astroturfer started his account 2011-11-14 a couple of weeks after the DP was released, that is 512 days ago. Astroturfer now has 5,249 posts. That comes out to a minimum posting rate of 10.25 per day if he posts each and every day. Skip some days and the rate increases.

I noticed that nearly every single one of those posts were Microsoft propaganda right down to marketing buzz words ( fast and fluid ) and competitor FUD ( attacking Apple, iOs, Google, Android ). There really is no clearer case of fraud that exists.

That thread that you pointed to "Just how many people hate Windows 8?" is a fine example of his pathetic work ( as was his "Windows Start Menu Discussion" diatribe that was equally embarrassing ).

If he isn't a paid Astroturfer, then he is either the most obsessive-compulsive unpaid fanboy in history, or, he is a sock-puppet for Sinofsky or Jensen Harris or Sam Moreau.

No matter what the answer is, it is a stunning example of the state of affairs involving Microsoft. They began this kind of nonsense during the Vista fiasco, and are completely unable to break free from deception and propaganda. Even comparing them to IBM doesn't quite cover it because at least they tried to remain professional.

I am amazed that his shill-instructors are apparently still pleased him with him. Talent pool at shill-school must be pretty weak to still keep Dot on the line. I noticed that even other metrotards refer to him as "our MS employee" and such.

I suspect his over the top attitude drives more people away than it converts. Thoughts?

What sucks for Microsoft is that the biggest FUD is directed at themselves. They apparently can't sell a Windows version without trashing the previous ones utterly and totally. I think no competitor EVER spent so much money badmouthing Windows like Microsoft itself does on a daily basis through their astroturfers. That's just not healthy in the long run.

Imagine being a programmer at MS and seeing that the PR department of your own company is trashing a feature you worked on hard trashing relentlessly. Your colleagues are instructed to call your previous work "inefficient stupid garbage" and you fully well know that they will do the same in a few years to the thing you're working on right now.

Pure motivation!

Now that's rich. Microsoft sicking the dogs on the competition. This is the pea-shell game again. While they distract everyone they proceed with business as usual, and that business is turning the Windows Operating System into a software, and a gateway to the Microsoft store. They are building the foundation even as we speak. The fact that the desktop still exists is the "bone" left for the shills to cite as disproof. But when it is removed then what is left? The Microsoft Store. Actually, sideloading, which is allowed in Enterprise but not in consumer-land is waiting in the wings as the final safeguard against government action. Mark my words. Anyway, here they are distracting everyone once again, "look over there at Apple and Google". Microsoft hypocrisy at its finest.

Chinese state-run media criticizing Surface Pro warranty ( NeoWin 2013-04-09 )

According to a report by Bloomberg, China National Radio is criticizing Microsoft for not following the country's law requiring notebooks to have a two-year warranty for main parts and a one-year full repair warranty. The Surface Pro, the outlet said, should fall under the guidelines of that law. Instead, Microsoft is offering a one-year warranty for both main parts and a full device repair.

Naturally the fanboys don't like China anymore. They liked them last week when they went after Apple though.

Microsoft: Support Ends For Windows XP in One Year ( Tom's Hardware 2013-04-10 )

From The Forums: Our readers look back on Windows XP ( NeoWin 2013-04-10 )

( mentioned by previous posters ) Fine examples in the comments of the insane hatred that MicroZealots have for Windows XP. It also reinforces my theory that this whole thing started during the Vista apocalypse when Microsoft incredibly declared war on its previous, highly successful operating system. The fanboys took note of this and followed their leader and continue to do so to this very day. At this point in its life, after many years of tweaks and debugged idiosyncrasies, Windows XP just works. So what is there to hate about it? It's ridiculous. "Just working" is the job of the operating system. Of course the fanboys quickly say "but try it on new hardware", "new" being the operative word. This is where the MicroZealot mentality falls apart because they cannot process the next logical thought - Why wouldn't it work in future hardware? The answer is that Microsoft breaks the older drivers which is unforgivable and also that they pressure OEMs into abandoning older versions of Windows. A smart person would figure this out, the fanboys of course cannot.

I bet many grandpas are still running XP. It's tough to explain it to these people since these are the kind of people who usually stick to 20 year old cars.

That's supposed to be an insult? Stupid child. Grandpa knows best.

Can't wait. Maybe developers will finally start supporting features that were introduced in Vista. XP has been holding back progress for years, it really needs to go. And people/companies who haven't upgraded yet - well, they only have themselves to blame...

I blame Microsoft for this Idiocracy. Windows was always a platform, a necessary requirement for other software to run on. As long as backward compatibility is carried forth, that is, the API that is used by the software contains the same functions going forward then the version of the platform does not make a difference. This was true until the evil strategy of planned obsolescence reared its ugly head. Now we have MetroTards that welcome it. Microsoft has completely blurred the lines between an operating system and all other software now, and that is entirely purposeful. An OS is needed to allow software to talk to hardware, they successfully inserted "Windows" into this position, then they intentionally modify Windows to break both previous hardware and software in later versions, thus ensuring more purchasing of Windows. Consequently Microsoft now has intellectual property that you REQUIRE to use your computer and they REQUIRE you to update it at regular intervals. This is a public utility trust in every sense of the word. Bust this company up, now.

Yeah well I am doing the opposite, so I cancel out your strategy. I am not working on customer Windows 8 systems and will do everything in my power to thwart it's probability of success. I also wish Microsoft would release an update to break existing Windows XP and other versions. This is what it would take to have the company broken into pieces. Please Microsoft, listen to your fanboys!

As Formfiller mentioned, this is NeoWin's most infamous Astroturfer who is also their biggest laugingstock. I just had to repeat it again here. What kind of mental illness does one need to have to be used like a puppet like that? Freud lived in the wrong century. BTW. the last part of his quote is what I believe Jaclaz was referring to with his link Get Windows 7. UPDATE: from that last link the astroturfer says this is his former Windows XP desktop: "This was my XP desktop the morning I blew it away for the last time before installing Vista.". I haven't read through that last thread yet but I expect it to be chock full of psychiatric case studies of mental patients as usual.

When Vista started getting real bad press and the siege mentality set in, it was obvious that Microsoft went off the rails in a big way. One of those ways was in nurturing a bumper crop of brainless fanboy parrots. I didn't believe it at first, because the common perception was that Apple had this market cornered ( although I never really met anyone like that in the Mac universe, they were all very nice to me ), and later the Linux sycophants displaced them. But there is no doubt in my mind, our modern Windows MicroZealots are the worst of all, nothing else comes close. They are embarrassing and will lead to the utter destruction of Windows if Microsoft continues to listen to their MetroTard insanity.
