Windows 7 or Windows Home Server 2011

I am sure this has been debated and/or discussed frequently. I am looking to build a new pc, but I want to know if I should go with windows 7 or whs2011.

My main uses for it would be to stream my media on my network, to my other computer, google tv, xbox, etc.

How effective is Windows 7 at sharing across a network?

And if I went with whs, does it allow basic programs to be installed or is that something difficult to do? Such as vlc, games, chrome etc.

Any help and input is appreciated. Thank you very much.

That depends. WHS2011 is basically Server 2008R2 so yes you can login to the machine to install applications such as an FTP Server or whatnot, but it not designed as a desktop OS. It won't run games very well if at all, and using it as a standard-purpose desktop for web browsing and office tasks while doable, will be annoying due to the more stringent security policies and open up the server to attack. If you want a DEDICATED server box, go WHS2011, if it's gonna be a desktop doing some server tasks, but mostly personal useage go Win7.
