How can I get a PS/2 scrolling mouse to work in Windows 95?

Okay, last weekend, I bought a Mitsumi Standard Scroll Mouse (PS/2) from eBay for the Toshiba Tecra 720CDT laptop with Windows 95 OSR2 and for some reason, the middle button/scroll bar doesn't seem to work. I even downloaded the drivers found in the mtm0413.zip file and it wasn't any help. :(

The mouse is still functional, but I would like to take advantage of the scroll wheel and middle mouse button under Windows 95, which isn't supported by default.

The model number of the PS/2 mouse is ECM-S5002, by the way. How can I get the scroll mouse/third mouse button to work under Windows 95?

for some reason, the middle button/scroll bar doesn't seem to work.

The problem is WHICH reason.

Does that mouse middle button work on another PC with another (more recent) OS?

Or is it DOA?

Did you install the software correctrly?

Refer to this doc:

http://sysdoc.doors.ch/MITSUMI/1/ScrollUK.pdf

Did you have previously anothe mouse driver installed?

Do you see any device with a question mark in device manager?

The scroll mouse button works on this PC correctly. As for the Tecra 720 CDT PC, I previously had another PS/2 mouse installed and it was just a standard PS/2 mouse. I had to do the following:

1. Reinstall the Mitsumi PS/2 scroll mouse.

2. Disable the other PS/2 compatible mouse as it causes a IRQ conflict with the Mitsumi PS/2 scroll mouse.

3. Delete (or rename) the msmouse.inf file in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

4. Re-enable the Mitsumi PS/2 scroll mouse and shut down.

The Mitsumi PS/2 scroll mouse is working correctly, but still for some reason, the middle mouse button and scroll buttons still don't work.

I'm sorry that my grammar is not perfect, but what are the additional steps that I need to take to get the middle mouse/scroll button working? :(

Try going to Safe Mode, then deleting all mice in the Device Manager from Safe Mode. After that, you'll have to use the keyboard to move around, so remember that <Ctrl> <Esc> opens the start menu. Then reboot and, from Normal Mode, reinstall the mouse once again. Good luck!

For some reason, going into Safe Mode and attempting to remove the mice from the Device Manager didn't work. I got a error saying that the registry is corrupt and had to be restored from a good backup copy.

I'll try to pull up a screenshot if I can explain the reason more.

I thought that mouse wheel does not work in Windows 95 unless you have a specific mouse driver for it. I remember, back in old days when I had Windows 95, a new mouse with mouse wheel came with diskette with such specific driver. There was a tray utility (may be the first tray icon I saw in my life :) ) that allowed assigning an action for the third mouse button from several available ones. Windows 98 SE works with mouse wheel natively.

Yep, but the issue here is seemingly that the actual driver cannot be installed or cannot be installed "fully".

per LoneCrusader's post (and I believe he is correct) -

v4.12 -

Found here (other versions as well) -

http://am.net/lib/tools/Microsoft/Hardware/

Filename - IP4_12EngALLMsi.exe

Gone from the MS website (I believe this is the last 4.xx version available)...

Some "odd" info (re - "POINT32.EXE") -

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,1498573

(implies that a "RUN" registry entry exists)

Various info -

http://kbalertz.com/837910/Mouse-wheel-events-Visual-Basic.aspx

http://wapedia.mobi/en/IntelliPoint

Edit - Intellipoint 4.0 (at DriverGuide)

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=61727

Also found here -

Thanks :thumbup

Worth noting however that 4.12 will NOT work on 95. It only works in 98 & up. I have IP 4.0 and can upload it somewhere if anyone needs it.

I use a stone-old driver by HP, with any PS/2 mouse model, and any Windows from 95 to 2k (and more).

It consists of 4DMAIN.EXE and 4DPAGE.DLL, and seems to replace i8042prt.sys as well, during installation.

Named 4dmain or "Pilot Mouse Wheel Scroll v1.0" (v5.0 seems less good)

It has become uncommon now, but is worth seeking. I have copies. Maybe mine is from DriverGuide.com,

called Ch7002 in short, or HPDeluxeScrollMouseCH7002.zip

What I like at it:

- It scrolls, in W95 as well, sure.

- It scrolls an overflown panel without giving it the focus.

- You can reprogram the buttons. At mine, clicking the roll maximizes a window - Microsoft has forgotten to give a keyboard shortcut for that.

The second advantage isn't obvious, but :

- If you have a pocket calculator software over a text file, you can scroll the text to see data and keep the calculator over the text

- If you move files in Explorer, you can scroll the left navigation pane to the destination, and keep the right file pane with the chosen source files.

- And more

Serious drawback: the scroll stops working in Firefox on W2k, how bad.

The "core" should be the 4DMOUSE.VXD.

It seems that hat particular driver has been shipped with half the mice in the world, a few examples:

Yes. I posted that when I was in a hurry :blushing:

I'm glad this subject has come up however, and that you all seem to be finding other solutions besides IntelliPoint. I have been trying unsuccessfully to figure out how to "slipstream" Wheel Mouse support into my 95 project. I tried downversioned 98 files to no avail, and I tried to "rip" what I needed out of IntelliPoint but that doesn't work either. Maybe one of these other approaches could be used.
